introducing my 870gal tank (pics ahead)

Nice tank! I noticed the green slimer growing on the front glass. Mine did that and wow it was a pain to clean and scrape coraline around it.

Ralf, I'm in process of upgrading our system to similar size of yours, and I have very important question before I put order for the main display tank.

It is about wavebox and the drain placed in one corner. How does that affects the waves ? would't it be ideal to have the drain in the middle of the tank considering that the wave would have most of the time the same level in the middle?

I'm just concerned about that and would love to hear your input on this after some time you have been using it.

thank you,
Adrian

blide,
you're so right! Actually I fragged and moved it yesterday. Currently I am moving and cutting
some coral for a (hopefully) better overall view.

laomedon,
I have two waveboxes, one at each side (don't forget to switch the jumper in the controller for that opposite work).
The closed loop box is always filled with water to the top.
The overflow box to the sump has two drillings, one for emergency and one with a
valve for normal operation. I close that valve a little, so the water gets retained and the
overflow box is also filled up to the top.
The "wave" is always there, even if the boxes are not filled.
The waveboxes are not moving the water through the tank, just some inch forward and back,
so the whole water in the tank is moved, but only for some inch.
Regarding the waveboxes, the overflow in the middle of the tank would imho only be needed if you have no "retain"? valve and the wave falls with a loud roar into the overflow.

Best,
Ralf

....I finally managed to stop drooling over my keyboard!! I'm speechless, and believe me, that doesn't happen often. WOW. Your dedication and attention to detail has resulted in creating THE MOST stunning tank i have seen... EVER! Your tank looks like a photograph. I would pay to see that tank in person. Thank you Ralf.

Hi all,
your postings, esp. those of mgb and blide made me rethink some coral locations.
So shortly after receiving them, I started to frag some bigger coral (frontrow green slimer etc.) and relocated some of the others. After some weeks now, they seem to have adaptet to their new locations.

I tried to achieve a more natual, more "3D" look and preserve more swimming space for the fishes.
At least the last thing worked and the fishes, esp. the surgeons adapted after some days and started to swim in the left part of the tank again. The powderblue tang seems to love it to be able to swim the full 3 meter again.

Hmm, more changes, yes, I put in a pair of Paracentropyge multifasciata.
A shy species, that (as expected) show up very rarely and hide most of the time in caves deep in the reef.
I like having fishes in the tank, that do not show up very often, so observing the tank is still interesting. I also count my harem of Pseudochromis fridmani as such.

Here are some pictures to show, what I did. They're a bit on the blue side, thats because the HQI was already off and there is only T5 half coldwhite / half blue on.
The blue bulbs are near the end of their lifetime, so light with HQI feels a little too yellow to me. Time to change them.

Hi Ralpf ,

Cant belive it, you did it even better now, who would belive erier your tank could look better, but hey, here it is.

As always my favorite off all the times.

still cant get enough of that shot, how long again have the system been up and running? did you have a previous tank before this?

Thanks again,

cbui2,
I put in the LivingRock in Sept. 2005.
I kept some tanks before, some of the coral and fish are from previous systems.
Saltwater, I started about 18 years ago, freshwater about 30 years (at age of 8).
The first systems (well, 18years back) only with softcoral and fish and T8 bulbs only :-).
At this time, without a skimmer and with a tricklefilter *shakehead*.
About 13 years ago, I started to keep more and more SPS and less and less fish and softs :-).
Thanks for asking.

Best,
Ralf

Beautiful as always Ralf. It's a real pleasure looking at images of your reef.
Please post a picture of the Multifasiata pair if you manage to capture a shot of them. I have a Multifasciata in my reef too for 6 months now, a stunning little fish :)

Thanks again *bow*,

Baros, unfortunately I didn't manage to get a pic with both of them. I see them swimming together from time to time, but that's quite fast and behind some rocks :-(.
For now, I only managed to take a pic of one of them.

Ralf
