Is Drinking RO/DI water safe?

RO water is the way to go. Not sure on the specifics but running it through the DI portion I have heard is not safe.

When I need drinking water I just disconnect my RO unit from the DI line and run it into a 2G Poland Spring container that I use over and over again.

I know there is a more technical way to do it so that I don't have to take the line out before it goes into the DI stage, but this is easy and works for me.

Works perfectly.

Long-term drinking of RO (DI or not) water is not the wisest choice. Given it's complete lack of solutes, it can contribute to electrolyte imbalance in our bodies. As is the case with just about anything we ingest, moderation is key. A couple glasses of RO water mixed in with whatever else you're drinking on a regular basis will be fine. Drinking it EXCLUSIVELY is not wise. I like to drink it with ice made from tapwater. The ice has some solutes in it to balance things out and make it less of a trouble. I also use it to mix sport drinks using a concentrated mix, again adding solutes back into the water. Lastly, I use it in my Camelbak exclusively as it greatly slows the production of algae in the rube and resevoir. Since I'm usually using it in conjunction with exercise, I moderate the no-solute effects by bringing a couple shots of pickle juice which are loaded with electrolytes (cyclists trick).

It's not going to be dangerous unless you are drinking a very large amount and not eating or drinking anything else. More to the point, it's probably a "waste" of DI resin since there's really not going to be anything dangerous or unhealthy post-membrane. That said, drinking RO water is pretty much a waste, too. At home I've tapped pre-membrane or set up a second unit for drinking that is just sediment and carbon filters. That gets out most of what you might consider harmful or distasteful without wasting expensive membranes or resin and without the huge waste ratio of a membrane.

One thing to consider - RO and RO/DI are no longer chlorinated. Depending on how you store and dispense, you could run a risk of contamination. It also no longer has flouride so make sure you brush your teeth. :D

Long-term drinking of RO (DI or not) water is not the wisest choice.

I would expect the risk for danger is more on the acute overdose side than from chronic use, since most of the good "stuff" that's pulled out by a membrane or resin is available from other sources.

Then again every time this question comes up it's pretty clear that:

1) there's no real solid information out there that's directly applicable
2) people drink RO and RO/DI all the time without obvious problems

My parents have a well with SERIOUS sulfur. Even with their high tech chlorinating water treatment equipment, without an RO drinking water system, their water is almost undrinkable.

I used to drink pretty much only RO water at home for a few years. I am pretty sure purified tap water in bottles is nothing more than RO water.

Personally, I don't drink it for some of the reasons stated ,mainly the lack of solutes. I know folks who drink it regularly.Tap water is fine for me though.

The problem is the lack of any long-term studies I'm aware of of people who have been drinking RO or RO/DI for many years which I would imagine would be necessary for problems to spring up. I work with a woman who claims that she and her husband suffer from osteoporosis that they have traced back to drinking distilled water for many years, but I don't know how that was determined.

I don't think drinking O TDS water is a very good idea, but I am also not sure that drinking 400 TDS water is a very good idea, depending on what all is in there. RO might be preferable to that. Who can say?

Make and drink my own ro water. I use filter guys setup. Lets me choose ro or di by opening a valve. I store in a water cooler.

I heard also that RODI water is so pure it will drain you. I, personally, had an RO system in my old house where I lived for almost all of my life. The guys come and change the membranes about once a year. No one has had any problems due to drinking RO water.

In terms of Fluoride, my father (who is a D.C.) found a somewhat recent study showing little to no positive effects of having it in water UNLESS you do not have your adult teeth. Reading further I saw a story about a town in Colorado (I believe) whom had large amounts of Fluoride in their tap water, thinking it was safe and healthy for the residents. Everyone in the town drinking the tap water suffered from extremely brown teeth, apparently found to be a reaction caused by the large amount of Fluoride in the water.

With all of the crap found in tap water nowadays from chemical plant run-off and certain hospitals and other similar places that flush all medication not being used, I feel it is best to use RO water. These have been indirectly linked to health problems in certain areas (if you live in Rochester no doubt you heard the stories of people living by the Kodak plant).

Just my 2 cents.

RO/DI has no minerals at all you would die from only drinking RO/DI water. It doesn't even conduct electricity
