Is Sixth Ave a good place to buy fishes?

Solid points - I can't disagree. I am a regular there, and they have turned out to be solid fish guys. Hence the recommendation. They are a little pricey though.

as for people saying you should pick the healty fish.. trust me I spent a lot of time just looking at the specific healthiest looking fish that catches my eye.. observe it for a long time making sure there are no weird behavior from the fish, not showing signs of cyanide poisoning, underfeeding or viral infections and such.. but guess what... you get the same crap as health from the fishes that you get there... maybe you'd be better off getting the fish as they arrive to that place prior to the fish being in contact with there water... but I've had multiple times of very healthy looking fish that I've bought there croak on me either a couple of weeks after being in the tank or not even getting home yet while still in the bag... Just buy there with your own disgretion... I know I now only get fish from places that are MORE reputable, better ethics and has a good track record with customers.

Quality is sketchy and something to keep in mind; their livestock is cyanide caught. I would stay away...
If I am not mistaken they get there livestock from same wholsalers as everyone else. I have bought alot of fish over the years and I have had the same survival rate from 6th ave as anywhere else. I went to lucky ocean one time and was very dissapointed I would visit 6th ave over it anytime.

Their issues isn't so much where they get their fish from, but how they are treated once they hit their waters. All their tanks are circulated on the same water, which isn't a big deal because most every LFS does have some massive recirculating system like that, the issues come with the ultra cramped conditions which go well beyond other stores, that'll usually induce stress a little more easily as a result they'll not fight off any potential disease/parasites as easily, allowing for more to enter the water.

Not to mention the fact that it's a self-serve place kind of shows me that they are all about selling as many fish as possible with as little work as possible. While sure LFS are in that business, there's something to be said about having someone help you out if you don't know much, hopefully steer you away from a fish if they know you're new.

That true, that statemen mean alot of other thing.maybe that why alot newby kill their livestock NOT becuase of lfs, maybe lack of experience or their system is not ready.sixth ave. may not be the best place to ask for advice .About the crampy tank.most of their livestocks only temperory holden tank, not different from wholesaler we're know.

I can only think of two people at Lfs that give helpfull advice an thats Bob at all about fish and Evan at Sea Splendor. I think other wise you are better off helping yourself.

Perhaps. Although a newbie regardless how in experienced can't make diseases or parasites occur where none didn't exist before.

Yup, happend to me multiple times when first started reefing and did not know about 6thave... The minute I added a fish from their place... automatic ICK brought in to my tank....

They really ought to have a sign there with IQ minimums just like fair rides have for heights.

I was in the area months ago, and stopped in to get a couple of fire shrimp.
Ran across a nice little clown all by himself, and made a snap decision to increase his chance of living dramatically. Then went and picked out shrimp.
Got to the register, and the clerk bagged my order, but not before first pulling the shrimp out of the shared container. Then he mentioned copper in the fish water section.

I did what anyone would do in a similar situation, divert the blame!
" I don't see a sign"

For the record, the shrimp lived.

IIRC, they transship their animals, so they do not get them from the same place as everyone else. Getting a transshipped animal has its own risks that are usually eaten by the wholesaler.

What people have said about the risks of getting animals from anywhere is almost true. :D

I wouldn't by from 6th ave because everything I have tried from there has had dismal survival rates and I don't think reef animals should be treated like a volume resource.
