That a male clownfish would not change into a female if there was no female present?
Also what is the longest that I could expext a male clarks clownfish to turn into a female if there was a juvenile subordinate present.
I bought my pair from a split wild caught group about 8 months ago the larger fish i believe was a male and the smaller a juvenile.
over the 8 months the small juenile has almost reached the size of the larger one but the larger has not changed in size it is definatly dominant and aggressive towards the juvenile but they dont act like a true pair ie the smaller one is tolerated but not accepted and since I added a nem a few days ago there has been no improvement with the less domnant fish not being allowed into the nem.
I was wondering if the larger could still be a male that has not changed it still rock bites and shimmies occasionally but not as much as the smaller one and still has a solid yellow tail (i know that this is not that relevant to all clarks i.e females have white tails)

Any thoughts appriciated

ok so would a female chase a a male alot and shimmy occasionally towards it this is the behaviour of the bigger one the smaller one is constantly shimmying and fleeing from would be attacks.

I have been wondering this too, I have a small maroon clownfish by him/her self in my 30, will it automatically become a female since s/he is alone?

BTW sorry if I stole your thread :)

adtravels,

In my experience, your clowns are behaving normally if they are Clarks. Females tend to want considerable space and security, not to mention get over the 3" mark before playing nice. How large are the presumed female and male? Are you "overfeeding", which is actually not a bad thing for getting that female growth spurt going :)

AR16,

If given time, space, and plenty of food, your little clown will most likely become a female.

In all my years with clowns, I have had/have only one not progress from Juv to female when left alone, in a group, etc. Still have that ocellaris, still waiting :D

Good luck to you both.

Hey traveller thanks alot that makes me feel better she is almost 3 inches in length and the male about 2.5
She tolerates him most of the day but will occasionally go mental chasing for 5 seconds at this point the male is shaking and rock biting like crazy. it then subsides fo hours and hours.
Since I added the nem they have both come into supreme condition almost glistening.
I really want them to pair and breed so will be patient.
