Hey RC so I just finished converting To sw from fw.I previously had African cichlids.grew tired of that. With my set up listed below, what cool fish do you guys recommend? I like triggers and lions but don't really want fish that are gonna eat or kill each other. But I also dont care for goldfish type fish lol.. i basically want to know what's compatible and how many fish can I have based on tank size filtration etc..thanks!

I know you can't do lions and triggers together. We have a Volitan with a tang, damsel, and maroon clown, and so far, no issues. The tang is certainly big enough, and from what I've been told, the maroon, once full grown, will be big enough. My damsel just needs to be lucky if he plans on not becoming dinner! Are you looking for several bigger fish, or lots of smaller fish? I think with any aggressive fish, you need to choose same size or bigger tank mates.

Im looking at medium size stuff such as blue tangs and maybe a fuzzy or zebra lion.i also like groupers but I am unsure on that,i also like various clowns..my tank is fishless as of now looking for some suggestions. Don't want to waste money on somebodys "lunch" lol. I hear pink tail triggers are pretty good with tank mates.

"Most" tangs are minimum of 100+ gallons. My LFS recommends Koles to be 55, Yellow tangs at 65, Scopas at 75, Atlantic Blue tangs at 100, and all others are typically 120-180 and up. Lions are great, and mine seems to be quite peaceful and doesn't bother my other fish. (so far anyway LOL)

Really tangs need that much room? They dont look like they get very big .is that cause of their activity rate?does your lion bother your coral?

It really depends on how large of a tank you are going to have and what type of fish you like. Go on bluezoo or live aquaria and try to figure out what your must have fish is. Then research it and find out what is compatible. There are so many different options. Small angel fish and wrasse tank would be really cool for a 4' tank that isn't supper aggressive.

Thanks for that tang list! Good info. I'm having a hard time figuring out witch way to go predatory or reef? Decisions, decisions

Our lion doesn't bother our corals, but we don't have our rocks covered in coral either. (You can see pics in "reef discussion" I just posted new pics of our tank) He still has some "bare rock" spots to perch, without interfering with any corals.

And yes, the tang thing is due to activity. They're very active and will typically dart around the tank very quickly! (some only get to about 6inches, but still like to swim quickly) We do have a Kole tang in our 55, and he seems great. We have our rockwork laid out (now anyway, just rearranged last night) so he has a (open on both ends) cave in the back, places to dart through, as well as a straight shot across the tank, both in front of and behind rock. Ours looks very happy, and is quite active. Hes about 4-5 inches already; we'll be upgrading in a few months anyway when we move, but from experience, the Kole is doing awesome in a 55.

Lions and triggers don't go together. The Lion fish will eventually get nipped to death. As for triggers a species only undulated trigger, or a Picasso trigger might be ok for a while. Those would be the only ones able to go in a 75g. If you like tangs a yellow eyed kole tang, or something in the bristle tooth family, or a yellow tang. If you want lion fish you could do a few dwarf liOns and a manchu. Other lion fish will get to big and won't be able to swim properly with the way thier fins spread out.

Unlike FW a 75g is a small tank when you get into SW fish.

Just to be clear, a tanks with an undulated trigger would be a SPECIMEN-ONLY tank. They don't get as big, but will not tolerate other fish in an aquarium.

+1. Those are some mean SOBs.

If you have a 75 and don't mind one centerpiece aggressive, maybe a commersons angler? They get to be huge...like football sized. But they would be a single inhabitant...they will eat any fish/shrimp up to its own size.

Lions would be the best bet if you want other fish in the tank, and they still may pick off some smaller inhabitants.

Coming from a lionfish "nut": It really depends on the lionfish species...with the exception of "feeder-size" fish, or fish that may pick on the lion, tankmates are fine.

As for triggers, planktonic-feeding triggers are generally fish with lionfish, but tend to require larger setups. The blue jaw may work for you in a 75 gal tho.

I'd give these articles a read if you're considering lionfish:

At my lfs store they have a huge lion in the same tanks as a huge pinktail trigger What makes a 75g small? I bought a few fish today I got a picasso, few various damsels, percular clown, and a engineer goby.

Undulated triggers are pretty colorful. Green with orange stripes. You may be thinking of a queen trigger?

Regardless, both are species only
