i just set up a frag tank that 48x24x12 and my laminate floor seems to be a little off balance....the water level front to back is 1/4" different(higher on the back).....im not concerned with looks because its hard to notice,but is it safe or doomed to fail..View attachment 179076
 
I personally wouldn't worry, my current tank was set up with a side slant a little larger for 6yrs w/out an issue, it's been up for 8 total.

But if your concerned couldn't you just shim the stand

as mentioned, it wouldn't hurt to level it up. The main concern is that the tank is flat on the stand. As long as the tank and stand are on the same plane without any space between them, being slightly out of level isn't a huge concern.
 
the tank is flat on the stand and the stand is flat on the floor....im just going to leave it how it is..... im worried that if i shim it some spots on the stand wont be flush with the ground,opening a whole other can of worms
 
You need to level the tank, it is putting more stress on those seams and that is an issue. 1/4" difference won't make the seam fail overnight but they can fail at some point depending on the quality of the built including but not limited to materials (silicone, glass thickness) and labor (how the silicone was applied, any air left in there, curing time, etc).
 
what about gaps between shims? would that cause more problems(since the stand will be off the ground in some spots)?

Did you check what is causing the issue? floor, stand, or the tank (it might has been built unleveled)?
I don't think that would cause an issue, as long as you shim the corners well, because you can actually make a stand that has only 4 points (4 legs) of support on the ground as long as the the top provides full support to the rim of a glass tank or the whole bottom panel of a rimless glass tank or acrylic tank (that is where is important to not get gaps).
 
its the laminate floor....i wonder if it will level its self out after it settles..so if i do decide to shim, since its 1/4" off then i need to shim the back 1/8" to level it?
 
Having a tank off level would drive me crazy, but primarily because of aesthetic reasons.

Is it a solid or floating laminate floor? If it's a floating floor you may want to leave it up a while to see how it finally settles in.
 
1/4" is nothing to worry about as far as being level, so long as it is evenly supported. I really question the common belief that anything other than dead level is stressing the joints to a point of potential failure. How much extra weight are we really talking with it being off by a quarter or half inch? 10, 15 pounds?

It may be an aesthetic problem, I have torn down tanks and re-leveled tehm after the water line was occasionally visible from being a smidge off level front to back. But your tank will not fail at 1/4" if it is supported properly
 
i had a 125 gallontank that was on laminate as well and the level was off too but from side to side. it was a good 1/4 of an inch as well and i had no problems . i have since moved and now on level ground so to speak and i have had the tank for 5 years and no problems . personally i think your ok . good luck
 
thanks guys.....im just going to leave it right now to see how it settles....it is a floating floor so hopefully with the weight it will fix itself
