is this gig healthy?

so i was just at our local LFS and they had a big 13-14 inch gig the mouth was actully really tightly closed it was sticky it was also attached and has been there for almost a month http://i1265.photobucket.com/albums/jj512/reefkeeper28802880/IMG_0277_zps3c7df6e7.jpg
And yes i am aware it is bleached but other then that it looked like it was in ''decent'' condition in these pics it looks irritated a bit cuz i was looking if it was attached and sticky and i would just like to hear some peoples opinions on it.

If it have been there for 1 month and you don't see it deflated, then it is a good buy. I would get it if the price is right for you.
 
IMO it doesnt look that bad, but i cant see the mouth, and it is also slightly bleached as you know and also like minh said check back up on it over the next couple weeks, if you have to put a deposit on it for them to hold it for you so they dont sell to anyone else, and just keep checking on it..


ask them to feed it and see how it reacts as well.
 
Thanks for the replies guys and I don't know how it is for you guys but down here to find a gig or haddoni for under 200 is a steal this one is 179 as you see in the picture.
 
I have to shell out a lot of money for mine also. 179 is a steal for that Gigantea here in Corpus Christi also.

If I were you, I would put a deposit and have him put a smooth rock against the anemone and see if it would climb on to it. If it does, taken him home in a salt bucket is easiest. In the mean time , get your tank ready for it. Pick a perfect place for it in your tank. IME it is relatively easy to find a place where it does not move, but you got to have enough flow and light.

ya i now alot of places they are high priced, but IME you just gotta find the right places that have no idea what they got... like i found a farm feed store that happens to have a small saltwater section and have assrted colored carpets... 49.99.. thats what i paid for my big purple one and my little one i paid half that when i see them retail for 300+ online
 
Alright well we ended up takin him home tonight and so far so good he hasn't deflated or shown any bad signs his mouth is very tightly closed and he attached to the rock I put him on within 30 minutes and while feeding the fish one of our little ocelaris fed it a piece of shrimp and he ended up eating it and he didn't regurgitate it and I also replaced the carbon and was just wondering if thee is anything else I am missing or should do il try to get some pictures of him up tomorow.
 
Also forgot to add that as you see in the pics he looks yellow but his foot is a very dark purple does this mean he will be purple or is he gonna be yellow?
 
The color of the foot does not have anything to do with the color of the tentacles. Hope he will be green for you. The yellow/green color may get brighter under high light, that the color of the tip of the tentacles. Then the zooxanthallae will come back and add brownish color to it. In very bright color Gigantea, the tentacles tip color does not get masked by the color of the zooxanthellae. This only happen under bright light.
 
Well last night he moved up about 3-4 inches and know he's like 5 inches or less from the top of ye tank and right by an mp40. Il get so e pics up tonight also when should I feed him next?

As I mentioned to Minh on another post, make sure you have your foam cover on your MP40. My gig got chewed up TWICE. The second time the foam cover was on, so make sure you monitor it if it is within a few inches of your MP40. For some reason, my gig likes to stretch its column and its at this point that it can get caught in the MP40. It only takes one tentacle in the MP40 for it to yank the entire anemone in, and it's a mess when it happens. I lost a few fish as a direct result of this.

If the gig has been there over a month, I too believe it should be fine. I've found that the 4 week mark is usually a key indicator of success or failure. You can feed it right away. You should get an immediate feeding response if the gig is indeed healthy. Good luck!
 
Thanks for the replies and the the cover is on and it ate the peice of shrimp within like a minute or two and is it true I should be feeding it small peices more often?
 
Feed it small, even mashed pieced of food. How often depends on how he response to feeding and if he regurgitate. I would not feed anymore than every 3 or 4 days. I got a new small S gigantea, the color looks very much like your's

Wow nice looking gig .. Also should I just let it go where it wants? And then move it If it gets to close to the mp40?

I agree -- move the MP40 if you can. I currently have my MP40s on the back wall, my children prevent me from having them on the side walls. :headwallblue:
 
Now is it possible that the clownfish will over feed the gig? Cause they've fed it twice and it ate it both time one was a small price of shrimp and the other was a krill .. I'd think that if it wasn't hungry it wouldn't eat right?
 
looks good wouldn't worry about the clowns over feeding it, it will only eat so much.. imo would give the food to the clowns that it hosts and let them care for it.. much more natural. If it wasn't hosting would feed it 2-3 time a week. good luck looks great! keep up the good work.. mind if I drool a little on it? Move the mp if you can or put a small rock near it with the hopes that ot moves on to the rock an shift it away from the mp.. sure you don't want a gig in 100 parts.
 
Gigantea unlikely move over sand, so if your tank is large enough, put the rock it is on away from other rock and it will stay put there (if the condition there is good).
Good luck with him. If he is eating, I would feed him twice a week.
