Will do, I plan on taking most of the rock out I have now and making my aquascape even more minimal.

I asked for pieces no bigger than a softball.

I took a hammer to mine to make fist- to softball-sized pieces. One modest crack and they split nicely wherever I wanted them to.

Was heading to the airport with some more rock for another forum member....so hooked you up!

all the pics are making we want it NOW!

I was sitting in front of my tank tonight - finding more life. Then I realized that not all of the cracking/popping sounds were coming from my tank. The sounds were also coming from, well, the bathroom next to the tank. You see, I poured the remnants of all of the bags into a single bag to search for critters in Tuesday night. I left the bag in the shower since then.

Sure enough, tonight I just found two small pistol shrimp and two more crabs. Those are some hardy critters - 48 hours in a plastic bag in my basement shower. The water is quite cool.

Here they are inside a red solo cup.

I'm thinking about using one of my 10 gallon brewing buckets, filling it with fresh salt water and sticking each rock in it and shaking it off. Then I can better inspect and segregate the critters that fall off.

That a good idea?

Those are pistol shrimp. Much safer than the mantis. Keep them, they can be fun, usually pretty reclusive though. Once they go in, good chance you aren't getting them out.

True dat!

Those pistols live behind sponges in a symbiotic relationship....usually you will never see them....only hear them....

So after swapping emails with Richard this past week (which were responded to very timely), I placed an order for 20lbs of rock. He shipped it out Friday, with a est. arrival time somewhere near 11pm. Richard told me that Saturday morning pick up was fine aswell, which I was happy to hear as 11pm is past my bed time. So, this morning I cruised out to the air port with no delays and had the rock home in no time.

.

I see you picked up in Sacramento. That would be me too. How difficult was it to coordinate with the freight folks at SMF? I'm about an hour South, and it would suck to make the trip and wander around trying to find my box....

I'm not in Sacramento, but your question is quite similar to one that I received via PM, so I figured that I would throw in my $0.02.

My stuff came in via Southwest to Philadelphia. As Richard suggests on his website, I called the actual location where I would do the pick up. Since it's a cargo/industrial area, they gave me specific directions once I got off of Interstate 95. When I got there, I paid via credit card and they brought the rock out to the dock and lowered down the lift to the height of my trunk. I loaded the 6 boxes and was off. It didn't take 10 minutes.

My story was very similar - I called Midway to confirm my flight was on the ground and unloaded, and once there it may have been 5 minutes. As Rick said in his email to me "easy peasy" and it was.

Mpderksen-

For southwest it is its own building so once your there it's no issue getting your package. It was pretty easy to get to aswell. I suggest sat morning pickup for less traffic. You want to go left to terminal A. You will pass the terminal and as your heading back towards the freeway it will be on your right/west side. If you pass the usps building you gone to far, but it's a good place to turn around :). Google maps was useless once I got to the airport. Calling and getting direction as suggested would be a good idea if your worried.

Just picked mine up!

A small suggestion:
When you order and go to pick it up, make sure you have had cardiac clearance by your physician, because when he (the clerk) told me I owed him 65 bucks, I almost had an MI. Other than that, it was an easy pickup.

Here are the pics as promised.

Tank after I pulled all the old rock out:

Old rock, now in the sump.

Open the first bag, no nasty smells, and man this stuff I just loaded with life:

New aquascape with this stuff owns the old:

There was a separately packaged nem that I was able to acclimate. Hopefully he lives:

Some kind of cucumber:

The rock is just covered in barnacles. You can see them constantly licking the water.

All in all, after I forked over 65 bucks to the airline, my total was around 200 for about 40lbs of rock. All just loaded with life. Snails, crabs, shrimps, barnacles.

It sounds expensive, but if you think about how much money you will spend buying a clean up crew, dry rock and the crap to cure it, this is much cheaper.

Thanks so much for this, it's incredible.

Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Thanks. I go in and out of SMF every few months, but the freight part was new to me. I still have issues getting to the new B hourly lot.... Lol.

Second question: even though there is a ton of life on this stuff, and everyone is excited about that, how much of it is still around after about a year? Are we talking about a regular update required to have all this cool stuff? Or does some of it hang on for a while. Example, the barnacles: if I'm adding phyto, will they survive? Or is this really just a superior way to START a tank? I ask because I'm seriously considering adding to a 2-year old 75gal and 9 month old 25 gallon. Both are doing well, so I'm cautious.
