Mike, look forward to the pics

David, I have that thread bookmarked because I knew I would go back to it later. Good thing is that I didnt have to thanks to Chads help. The setup was a breeze. As for the parts, I was extra careful with this unit. I know how delicate they can be. Thats the difference between american made and international products. :)

Adversource, yes.. it was very easy. Thanks for the tip on the turkey baster. I will have to use that. I was looking at the probe holder and it seems like there is no need to purchase extra fittings. Looks like it will slide in on the JS2. I saw this when I first got it in.

Sptfire, thank you very much! means a lot!

Ed,
here is the pump i use for 2 years .I pull water throw the reactor and this way i can adjust the flow ,alk .

That looks like a serpent star to me and it is looking for a meal, IMHO.

When the serpent I USED to have went looking for a meal, it usually found one.:(

invincible, how long have you had the serpent? I have the exact same species, color wise, and wanted to have an idea of its lifespan. I had mine for about a year now, but when I purchased it, it was a juvenile sized.

its been about 3 yrs now. The only thing I dont like about him is that when he hides, he hides! I rarely see him come out during the day.

I finally got around to testing my water...

SG - 1.026
Ca - 480 (Goal - 500)
Mg - 1470 (Goal - 1600)
Alk - 7 (Goal - 9 to 11)
NH4 - 0
Nitrite - 0

I filled my C02 bottle yesterday and am ready for Ca Rxtr activation.

Hey Edward,

I have been super busy lately, but it's looking good :). I cannot wait to see a FTS when you get your lights.

Keep the pics coming. Any idea when you are going to add corals and fish?

Nick

I cant wait either! ;)

Yes, i plan to add fish very soon.. but only more hardy ones at first. A tang for algae control and then some other fish I will show later. As for corals.. softies & LPS first.. then SPS. The SPS will be added when the Ca rxtr has stabilized the water parameters. Are your Joculators looking for a new home?? ;)

Here's a shot of a trimless SPS system in Japan. All the tanks I saw over there were trimless. See the overflow system on the left hand side of the tank? A little different than what we use here, but standard for Japanese tanks.
But as far as the tanks in Texas, I was thinking the same thing. Some of the coolest tanks I have seen are in Texas!

Jim

Jim, thanks for the info. I have studied the Japanese spotlighting for a while now. In the past years people did not understand the deep colors the Japanese acquired. As you may have seen, it has to do with the angle of the light and where the light penetrates the skin of the coral. This is what I am after. The tank below with the 20 degree angle is one of my favorite Japanese tanks. The pic below is from the Japanese AM magazine.

The cylinder shape overflow is not a good idea IMO. Its is very hard to clean. Less space, but more work.

Japanese AM magazine ?? Can you give us more info on this magazine ?? Do you have a subscription to it ?? How did you go about getting it...

Haha, no my joculator is not going anywhere ;).

What fish are you thinking of adding? Any angels :)?

Nick

Edward, i always wanted to see someone using japanese spotlight! I would also be interest in those japanese magazine.
I see you are going to run your tank like those Italian tanks! What is the salt you are using right now to have those parameters?

wow it's good to know that my serpent has a pretty long lifespan. in my 24g, he TRIES to hide but fails miserably  have you seen any more of these guys on sale? they come in to LFS every once in awhile, and i was interested in getting him/her a mate. not sure how easy serpent star breeding is but it's a cool thought.

Awesome tank Edward. Finally, it's great to see the open top starfire tanks picking up in popularity here in the states. We need more members to join the brotherhood. :)

asnatlas, I abbreviated it.. its really called Aquatic Marine and its a quaterly magazine from Japan. I received these magazines from Aquarium Design Group here in Houston. They recently visited Japan for Armano's ADA showoff.

nick, I may try some angels. As you know, the japanese are big on angels. It's just not one angel, but many in one tank. Seems to me like they have mastered this husbandry in a full blow reef tank.

John, my plan is to run the Italian Blu Coral or Brogri method. The secret "pappone" feedings, intense lighting, super skimming, good flow and elevated water levels. The problem is that I need corals first. ;) But, I plan to have my water stabilized at those levels before introducing SPS.

i2ik, Im using Oceanic. I used to use Kent in my previous tank, but after knowing about Oceanic's high level elements, this was the way to go in order to maintain those high levels. Alkalinity is low, but I have already managed to bring it up to 10. SG is also a factor in this as more concentration equals more elements to work off on. Therefore 1.026 is where I will be stabilizing at.

kigs, I do see them from time to time. Just have to look around or you can order them online. :)

Project Reef, Im ready to be branded with a the brotherhood iron stick. Starphire is the way to go. Like naka told me this weekend.. looks like 2007-08 will be the rimless era in the states.

Hey Edward,

When you get ready for coral or want some advice on angels shoot me an email ;).

The Japanese have mastered the art of a mixed reef with angels. I always dream about being able to put a pair of peperiment angels or a a pair of debelius in my tank.....maybe some day, haha.

Anyway drop me a lin when you are ready :).

Nick

kigs, my two serpant stars are going on 7 years in my tank...well three tanks over those years. Hearty little suckers. I have two, one just like Edwards and one that is lavendar with purple striping on the legs. They sort of leave each other alone for the most part unless they are going after the same food bits :)

The whole idea of angling the spotlights makes so much sense. That is one of the reasons that our top down views are so much more colorful...you are looking at the part that gets the most direct light. The glass also impedes some of the color, though starfire limits that issue :). I look forward to seeing how you angle your lights and what kind of colors you get throughout the sps corals, okay truthfully I am drooling in anticipation :D.

Yup, rimless all the way. If I get another tank in the near future it will definately be a starfire rimless variety. Definately not large but a nice 120-150g cube might suit me well :D. At the moment it is just a pipe dream...no room for another tank unless I convert part of our detached garage and make a little fish room out there. I like the tanks in the house though. Anyways, I digresss...

Keep the info and pics coming Edward. Any decision on the lighting other than some spotlights??

How did I miss this thread? I actually just saw it linked on Naka's thread. You guys are killin' me! I just bought my first house 6 months ago, so I can finally have a big tank. After 12 years of moving little reefs around through school, etc... I'm especially sussecptable to these awesome tank threads right now.

Edward, I really dig your taste in overall tank aesthetics. I take things well beyond the tank too. You're several steps ahead of me, but I've been dreaming of a large, trimless/braceless tank for a long, long time. It'll be nice to follow your progress.

Killer reactor, btw. I've got a PDF for the jetstream 1 manual if you need. I can request an english PDF for the JS2 if you would like. For the lighting, I'm voting for the Sfiligoi Infinity. I've had only halides for many years, and I really miss the actinics. Additionally, I've fought battles with shading which are easily remedied with a bit of flourescent lighting. Since Aquarium Obsessed is one of the only places in Canada that I can locate top-shelf equipment, I'm looking at a lot of the same gear that you might be considering. You must have seen pics of Moonpod's ACLS'... Killer!

Great looking setup.
