Almost a week and not one post? I don't think so. Bumptidy bump!

I have made arrangements to get my stand completed by ADG in Houston. I have also ordered a Pacific Coast chiller. I wanted an american made chiller. Im still waiting on my extra parts for my spotlights.. didnt think it would take this long. And of course.. just waiting on my core lights.

I have added some frags and fish and they are all doing very well. Alkalinity has been stable. My initial fish plans were to add 30-50 purple anthias. After doing some research, it seems like thats not a good idea because they dont live long. Now im going after an all Angel tank with a full blown reef tank. Why? Just like SPS, it's a challenge. It will take time, research and trial & error to find the right Angels for my tank. Once I get my chiller setup, i will feel comfortable with adding more prized Angels. This time around, i want to have a TON of fish. It's kind of weird how I am doing the opposite of what I kept in the past.

Here's my first starter, Centropyge Multicolor:

$150 starter fish, not too shabby.

anyway I think I'm more exited about your lights then you are. Let me ask you, what do you think about the iwasakis spots? the 20k and the 6.5k? they are only 150 watts but how can one know how much par they have?

Also what is the point of the icecap pendant that is supposed to be used with them, can't they just be used with any pendant? I ask because it seems like these spot lamps just direct the light down or wherever you point them, so i don't see the point of a reflector. please enlighten me.

invincible: are you worried at all about running out of rock space for corals? I am assuming you will be going all SPS or a majority SPS. Or do you plan to be extremely selective on the SPS you introduce to utilize the space you have in the best way?

just curious.

Beautiful setup, I can't wait to see it progress.

zoos, as soon as I finish my lighting project I will fill you in on the details.

kozmo, sorry, but this tank wont be filled with SPS. Im taking a different approach. its a whole different theme. For some reason, SPS dont excite me like they used to. I still like them, but I only want to add a few for diversity. If you look back a couple pages, it shows that I have a section dedicated to SPS. Everything else will be softies/LPS. In my last tank, I had a 80/20 rule for SPS/Softies, now its the opposite.

Actually thats not my first fish.. its my first Angel. I already had an Achilles tang. I only wanted one tang for algae grazing. The rest is for prized Angels and a couple of butterfly's. ;) At least i hope it works out that way.

fisheebill, thank you very much.

roonmac, you think just like me. :)

tanya, its a Japanese trend right now to have a full blown reef with Angels & Butterflies. From all the research I have been doing on Japanese tanks, this is what's hot. Some of the older SPS reef tanks that I have admired are also putting in Angels & Butterflies. I've been chatting with a Japanese reefer in which I am in love with his tank and he has about 4-5 butterfly's and several prized angels. My favorite is his Hotumata. He doesnt even have one tang in his tank.

great minds think alike

i would also consider a half black mimic tang... but it looks like an angel so it doesnt really count...

how will you satisfy the need to graze ?

Get them while they are young, train like nbd13 does in his preliminary tank, feed sponges as treats, & keep them well fed.

By the way.. one thing that I didnt like about the Japanese guy I am talking to is that he runs his tank at 73 degrees!! In Houston, my electric bill would skyrocket. Not only that, it lessens the life of the chiller which sets me up for failure.

Hey Edward,

The reason for the 73 degree temp is the Hotumata angel ;). They need that cold water or they will die.

Keep me posted on the fish choices....I have a pair of tinkers coming soon :).

Nice achilles tang BTW, I am hoping to find a nice achilles hybrid for my tank.

Nick

Angels and butterflys are nice but most have a taste for LPS. I had a potters go crazy on me a few years back eating tissue from my acans, echino, and lobos. Sounds cool cant wait for updates. Are you planning mostly centrotype angels or some of the bigger ones.

mbun, I do plan to find other angels other than the dwarf size.

Nick, you are absolutely right. He also says he has a Marcella Butterflyfish which comes from colder temperatures. His goal is to slowly raise his temp back to 75 degrees over time. What does a hybrid achilles look like?

G'day Edward,

Glad this dream is finally living! The effort and hours that you spend is clearly visible, in the quality of your systems. Cant wait to see the first SPS.

Cheers, Josh

I've be trying to find info on the needs of butterflys. But I can't seem to find much info, probably haven't looked hard enough.

I wanted to start an all butterfly tank, not necessarily a reef. All I want is a short cube filled with only Falcula Butterflyfish. Maybe about 10.

I did find this page: http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/gallery/Marine_Butterflyfish_Gallery.php

It's a listing with photos of butterlfys and some info. Not sure if it's correct info.

I've also had very bad luck with Centropyge...little devils they are. Although sometimes you get nice guys. I've never had nice guys. But your tank is much bigger than mine. I actually wanted to put a Cream/Singapore Angel with my SPS/LPS tank. but ppl always advise me against this.
