Isla Escondido - invincible569's Rimless 300g

I have finished plumbing the sump and the overflow is now functional. My jaw dropped when I saw the finished rimless effect. Everything looks so clean & neat. For those who asked if you can add a wavebox, I would not do it. When I put my hand in to clean/rearrange, the water would move back and forth showing signs of overspill. You can probably get away with this with the overflow drainage being lower. But for my tank, this is perfect. It looks unreal!! I cant wait to get my light over it and let this tank cycle. For now, here are your teasers of the rimless effect!

Wow, that is looking incredible. How is the flow looking? How much flow through the sump?
Narowed down the list of fixtures yet? :)

Hey Chad! Thanks for the magnet cleaner! Cant wait to get it. :)

Honestly, I cant tell how the flow looks just yet until I get a light over it. I am trying to make out how its flowing inside, but the light is too dim. With the CL, I have two 1" shooting straight up and the others at an angle which will be hidden behind the rock work. Then I also have the two returns I can point where I need to. As for the sump flow, I am using my old Iwaki 30 from the previous tank. Its perfect. Not too much and not too little. I actually have it turned down a little. It's flowing just like it was with my previous tank.

As for lights, not yet. Still trying to figure out what will be the best setup for this tank. I want to go the SE route because it covers more, but not sure if 250 will be too dim or if 400 would be overkill.

I just got off the phone w/ someone who owns a shop and is using 250W as well as 400 and says he is getting better coloration under 400W. I think I would go 400W. As you said SE for sure. Maybe electronic ballasts though.

When you buy the fixture please make sure to check out the warranty and how easy the company is to deal with. My warranty has been a absolute joke. I've been having trouble now for 4 months and nothing has been done but a bunch of EM/PM's passed back and forth. Nothing like replacement parts that may actually fix something :D .

Chad, thanks for asking! I am getting mixed answers everywhere. I posted a thread on my local reef forum and someone plans to let me borrow his 400w SE setup. I want to see if it is overkill like he says (he changed back to 250's).

You know I will do my research. I will find that special light. :) Sorry to hear about yours. Is one of your bulbs still out?

One of the bulbs was broken in shipping and that was replaced by Fins Reef the next day. I keep having my fuse blow on the transformer on one of the MH bulbs. First we thought loose wire. I'vee checked for loose wires now at least twice. Now they think capacitor but nothing has been done. Right now the fuse has'nt blown in a couple weeks so I do'nt know what is going on  . Never has been consistent or have any rhymn or reason.

For a 24" deep tank, I think 400w will be overkill. I think the DE fixtures look nicer above rimless because they are much thinner. Most SE fixtures are bulky. I'm putting a 250W SLS Lumenmax 3 above my 100g rimless cube.

Awesome Edward...keep those pics coming. :)

I've debated the 250/400 watt setup myself. My energy bill would prefer the 250's. Naka's Infinity setup looks very nice and I believe he's running 250's. I'm still up in the air... seems like (3) 250's in the Infinity fixture would do a nice job on a 72x30x24 tank. With the extra 10" width, have you put any thought into front-back coverage? I like the Infinity because of the coverage, but you could almost run two low profile fixtures one in front of the other on your insanely wide 40" tank!

Personally, I would build a nice canopy matching the stand and put 3 lumenarcs with 250 watt SE 10,000K bulbs in them. Then, add as much actinic around them as you can. Put 3 of the 4" fan on the top blowing down and I seriously doubt your chiller would even turn on. I have found personally that 400 watters on a tank 24" or less is definately overkill. Especially if you are going to have a very wide open aquascape. Lots of wasted light and too much unnecessary heat/electricity.

Lumenarc makes a new stealth mogul and HQI pendants. Most purchase rimless tanks to be open top tanks so you can look down at your reef.

Yeah but you can also make a canopy like a ovens range hood where the canopy is from the ceiling down and not onto the tank Thats how im doing my nex ttank when I move in 6 months

Robster:

Thanks for letting me know. I did not know they had branched out the types of reflectors. I actually suggested a canopy like tanya said above. A hanging pendant that can be moved up or down at will.

I just posted 2 pics in my gallery that I found on the web of the new HQI Lumenarc Stealth. I'm trying to decide whether to go with this or the SLS Lumenmax 3 HQI. The Lumenarc works for both 250 or 400W HQI.

I just got back from a LFS and finally saw 250w SE 10K Hamiltons on a 24"H tank. It was perfect. It was very crisp and clear. Even at the sand bed, it was bright.

As for Naka's tank, he has DE's. His tank's brightness is perfect, but I blame that on the nice fixture he has. Those reflectors are top notch and not your average small size DE reflectors.

Ed my stand will be medal with cabient faces and the canopy will be made just like a cabient but with the lights in it which will raise and lower
1. For easy bulb changes
2. Light acclimation

As for lights I have 400w 20k Radiums and they are PERFECT I use NO actinics and there a crisp white/blue there awesome theres a thread asking 400w radiums or usio's and everyones says radiums over all the other bulbs downfall of them is that you need to change them evrey 6 months

Thats exactly what i was thinking... but wanted to see it with my own eyes. :)
