got to love that Dart! So you have the Vortech on full blast and it is using as specified? I haven't put mine on the Kill-A-Watt yet but I think I am going to do a watt/heat curve to see if I can control them a little more intelligently.

Sorry, I still dont have the Vortech jnarowe.

Here are some more PAR Ratings within the aquarium (in water) thanks to slovan. The right bulb is off, but this was the best pic to use for now.

Sounds like a fun little exercise to go through. :) It's nice to find out what you're really using vs. a manufacturer's specs. So from what you know now, is there anything that you would change from an equipment standpoint? How about your lighting?

Thanks guys.

Button buster, maybe one of the lighting guys can explain PAR readings. Im not too good at it like the other guys here. :)

slovan, yes it is. It has taught me a lot about my tank. As for the lighting, i found out that the middle Giesemann ballast was only producing 300w's. The one that wasnt in use produced 307. Therefore, I switched them out so the 22k bulb can use the 307w ballast. I also noticed that the 22K bulb isnt what I expected. These 13K Giesemann bulbs are over performing and this makes me happy, but not so much with the 22K. PAR readings are very low on the 22K. Makes me wish I would of went with the Aqua Connect 14K's now. :) Im also very happy with the magnetic ballasts as they produce more watts than advertised. The other future change is to possibly move the spotlights closer. The 65K is very strong and need to take advantage of it.

As for any other equipment, I would like to change my skimmer to an internal skimmer next time because I can eliminate one pump and not have to worry about it dieing.

I was also happy seeing the chiller not take up much power (500w) as I thought. That took down my monthly revolving expenses down.

Hi Invincible,
I was wondering if you can tell me a bit about your Bellus angel. I want to buy a pair for my tank. I assumed that the bellus angel haven't nip your corals right? How hardy is it? Does it eat right away when you get it or you have to try many times before you can get one that eat. What do you feed it?
does your bellus angel pick on other fishes like lyretail anthias.

Any advises about buying a pair or feeding them would be great.

Thanks alot.

Wow, the drop in PAR in such a short height is wild. I am going to have to test mine and see what I get. Since I have 35" of water, I am really curious what the PAR is at the bottom.

The power usage charts and par diagrams are great!
You are so in-depth. I love it!
This is why I love to read this thread. You have a lot to teach.

CaptNemo, the Bellus is a very good Angel. It does not nip on any corals. The Genicanthus species is probably the most safest out of any other angel. You should be fine with a pair. The are very territorial once they are established to any new fish. He is very hardy. He eats mysis, spectrum pellets, brine, but doesnt like to eat formula flake food.

jnarowe, I wouldnt be suprised if it was at the 100's or less. It is very surprising. This is what slovan warned me. :) It gives me a good idea of where the most light hungry corals need to be placed.

Bill, thank you. These tools that slovan let me borrow lets me fine tune my aquarium even more. It also lets me rethink my next purchases on equipment or corals.

eal, thank you .

RoBolton, I havent looked at the XM10K since the Giesemann 13K is rated very good. It came with the fixture. For the 22k, I may switch that out later to an AC 14K because of its intense PAR output compared to the other blueish bulbs.

Yeah, I really should check it out. I am using 1000W 20K lamps and I know they have less PAR than say a 10k lamp. But I cannot grow anything that requires low light. In fact my anemones all stay at the bottom and not in the full light. Could be that my lamps are too close to the water surface to, but using a PAR meter would give me the info. I need. I am going to shop around for one.

Are you looking for a light that is less blue?

How high is your Giesemann Spectra fixture off of the water surface?

Can you go into more detail about your spot lighting, I really like this idea. I might do some thing like that if you don’t mind. I found a spot light that extends from 3” to 51” in length.

I have been looking at all of the Japanese Reef websites for ideas on my project that seems to be months and months down the road because of my CFO at home.

jnarowe, would love to see how strong those 1000w's are!

Robo, Im actually looking for the bluest bulb possible. I dont think I will ever find one since I am using magnetic ballasts and it will only make it look more white. The Spectra is 9" from the water surface.

Here is what my PAR ratings are without the core Metal Halides on. Only T5's and one spotlight.

Wow, and so many people grow corals with T5 arrays. That is interesting. If you want a blue lamp, try the Ushio Colorlite 20K. That's what I use with my magnetic (M47) ballasts. They are blue, but everyone who visits my tank feels it looks very good. The only downside is that it makes taking photos a bit tough. Getting the white balance correct can be frustrating.

Ushio Colorlite

I am using the UHI-S1000BL.

Thanks jnarowe! Thats probably what I need. Does it makes your corals glow? How about growth? The wavelength (465nm) is similiar for the 250w SE from the 1000w you have.

i had the 250w, but mine are DE otherwise id send you my old bulb to test...
