I would say 6-8 inch's deep should be fine. And IMOP i would make it as long as you can this way your are "skimming/draining" from a greater area of the surface water.

As far as width and surface skimming goes, I have a plan. The tank has a 2-3 inch center brace. I'm going to run my returns along it. Then at the front of the tank, aiming toward the overflow, I'm going to aim either penductors or loc-line with a yet to be determined flow tip. The goal is a gyre.

How deep do penductors need to be positioned? I'm concerned with having something glaringly obvious in the visual field.

I think you'd want them at least 2-3 inches under the surface, or else you'll be dealing with a vortex or sucking air bubbles down from the surface.

Are you getting the penductors with the loc-line attached?

So far its just been in theory. Not sure I want to employ them if they need to be that deep, making them more conspicuous to the non reefer. A fan style tip on some loc line might work too if its not too deep, just under the surface. I do realize it wouldn't draw water up as penductors do. It might give nice surface aggitation and add to MH shimmer.

What do you think about depth of box Scott? I'm thinking 18 inches wide. Not sure of depth and profile. I'm going to have a box made .

If by "deep", you mean vertical height, then 6 inches is plenty. If I recall, that's what mine was. If by "deep", you mean front to back distance, the 6" is way too much. You just need enough to slip your street ells into the bulkheads. (I forget what diameter plumbing you're running.)

Yeah, 6 inches in depth, vertically. Front to back/ profile. You think 3 inches? 4? Ill have to measure the profile of the various sized 90's.

I think I'm going with 1 1/4 inch drain and 1 or 3/4 returns. I'm planning 2 drains and 1 return that splits as described above. One drain and elbow will be nonfunctional to start, but will be available should I decide to ramp up flow to the sump or increase return pump size. I just want to drill and install everything once.

Dave, I was down there earlier discussing the plan. Dave will catch up with you about it. I'm guessing you guys will have to come over to decide if it needs to be partially assembled on site.

I want to go with acrylic for the overflow so it can be black. Do you have an acrylic connection Dave?

Great lookn tank. I have the Herbie set up and works great. never needs adjusting, dead silent and NO micro bubbles.

Don't think I'm gonna do fingers, so that should make it easier. I'm gonna leave em smooth and put gutter guard across it. So basically I'll be looking for a box, with some tweaks. We can work out the details along with the rest the project.

I know there is a formula out there, and I'm not going to pretend to be well schooled in Physics (even though I've taken it like 4 times, for personal best of C- or something).

How much flow will a 1 1/4 PVC tolerate in a Herbie style drain.

My (current) delema is on sizing the overflow box.

It will be easy enough to measure out a PVC 90. I think a 1 1/4" 90 with a bulkhead, had a profile of 4 inches.

I'm only planning on using a Mag 7 or 9 TO START! I would like to leave myself the adjustability should I decide to ramp up flow.

Would I need, or would it be prudent to have the box made big enough to handle a "Double Herbie"? Would, one, 1 1/4" Herbie handle the flow should I decide to get into a bigger pump?

Drilling the tank a second time, AFTER it's set up is NOT an option, so I need to get this right peeps.

Your help is greatly appreciated!!!!
