It's official - I've gone crazy!

So I've been thinking about taking down my FW planted tank. That tank has been running continuously for about 20 yrs. Time for a change.

On a whim I decided to try Discus. I've never kept Discus so before I leave the FW world I thought 'Why NOT!'

Hari at Fish Pro had some real nice juvi Discus and now I have five of them.

And the planted tank? Well that's being condensed into a 20G tank. The original 60G tank is all cleaned out and ready for the Discus.

Any other NB reefers into Discus?

Dude! A live planted tank with breeding discus was my idea of the bomb tank before I got into reefing. While I never gave live plants a serious shot, my discus did spawn several times. Somewhere I have hi8 video tape of their laying eggs.

As beautiful as discus are, they get even more gorgeous with their breeding colors. Not a radical change but a definite increase in intensity. I was pleased as punch when I noticed spawning tubes and then just delighted when they actually layed eggs. As I recall, many eggs succumbed to fungus before hatching, and other adults in the same tank enjoyed their free live food.

What are the dimensions on the 60? I found a "high" tank style (versus a "long" tank) worked well, as it did for the angels I bred.

I've done discus a long time ago in a 90 gallon. Great fish but messy eaters. Driftwood and live pants are best decor or even a ceramic flower pot, especially if you plan on breeding. I'm trying to remember what type of foods we feed them possibly pellets, I know frozen blood worms as a treat. We tried to make or tank as close to the Amazon as we could, low flow, soft water. Always look at their shape, usually the rounder the better and their eyes. There were a lot of deformities back in the day because of inbreeding and such. Wild ones were coveted back in the day, they usually had black stripes on the bodies and down their faces.

The tank is 48x15x19. A really weird tank with first generation AIO.

As per the recommendations of those on 'Simply Discus' it is currently bare bottom. My plan is to raise them up to dinner plate size then move them into a 180G tank I have in storage. The final look would be white sand, some driftwood, some plants and 50 or so Cardinal Tetras.

I posted a vid on Simply Discus and they passed inspection from the experienced Discus folk there.

Hari is the youngster (well they all look like youngsters from my vantage point) that is always there. Perhaps Indian or Pakistani heritage?

Real nice guy and very knowledgeable with FW planted and Discus.

That little, short lived, fish store in RP (Age of Aquariums??) had a whopper Flowerhorn.

We tried Cardinal Tetras but they all died a few at a time. It was awesome watching them school. I'm trying to remember if we also had the Black Arrowana in with the Discus or if he was before or after them? Mind you we were attempting to make it a pure Amazon tank.

I would have thought CT were a colorful snack for an Arowana.

Hari is my go to guy there. Of course he is very often the only employee there!

You would think that but Cardinal Tetra and most tetras are mid water swimmers, arowana are surface swimmers, don't get me wrong, when he was hungry enough he would swim down or go down just to explore. We had ours eating pellets and then food sticks when he was bigger. Also on occasion gave him live crickets as a treat. Never feed him fish because didn't want him to develop fat behind the eyes, plus in their natural habitat they were actually insect eaters. I've never kept arowanas alone, always had other fish with them and always bought them when they still have their yolk sacks. To me that is the key to getting them to accept pellets and other dried foods.
