Iwaki pumps

Are they loud??

I want to get an Iwaki 55 external pump for my return. I'm currently using a Mag 12 in the sump. Would the Iwaki be much louder since its out of the water? The pump will be under the tank in the living room and my wife doesnt want any more noise :)

Thanks in advance...

It's hard to tell how much noise it makes but it's not some where near quiet, they may be quieter compared to the same class pumps but all high pressure pump come with high frequency running noise ( think it has to run very fast plus the high velocity of water movement). unless you have high head loss otherwise try to avoid of using this for your return.

So you think I would be better off with a slower return and maybe add a powerhead in the tank? I bought the tank used and the current return pump (mag 12) is the only water flow in the tank. I found a good deal on the Iwaki so I thought the flow would be comparable.

Any suggestions?

I want to use an external pump because my sump is pretty small and I want to use the return area as fuge.

FYI: 72 gallon bowfront

Thanks...

I'm running an Eheim 1262 external to my 15 gallon sump on my 72 gal bowfront. I have had the pump for over 2 months and it is by far the quietest pump I've had on the tank. Tank is in the living room.

I run an Iwaki 70 and it rest on a block of foam which helps vibration niose, however the pump it self isnt that quiet.

For a livingroom i would look into the eheims. I've also heard they are very quiet.

and i would also get some powerheads for additional flow in the tank, the return itself wont be enough.

good luck

I used to have an iwaki55 when I ran an ETSS skimmer.

IMO it was louder than a Sequence Barracuda which is a 4600 gph pump, but the 'cuda is pretty darn quiet.

I'm pretty sure an iwaki55 is louder than an submersed mag12, but I have never used a mag12.

For you tank size unless you have your sump far away from your display, you should not use Iwaki 55, you can easily find a different pump that can push similar amount of water with half of watts and very low noise. Eheim 1262 may be a good choice for you. Iwaki 55 may give you a strong wave in your tank but you can easily get it with a powerhead.

Thanks guys, it sounds like the Eheim may be the way to go...

What should I look at as far as powerheads/circulation pumps for additional flow in the tank?

Thanks again...

I have an Iwaki 100. Great pump, but sounds like an airplane engine warming up. I have it in the basement. It is not audible upstairs.

To distribute flow, I use 2 Sea Swirls aimed at each other: works off main pump, no additional intakes, no critters in same.

Those would be out of my budget...What about a Koralia 2 or 3? Would I need 1 or 2 to go with a 1262 return for a 72 gallon tank?

Any better options in that price range?

Iwaki's were GREAT 10-20yrs ago... but with the newer pumps out now.... they are LOUD!!

Like others stated that's the wrong pump anyways, they are built to run at a high head pressure.... you need a pump which isn't made to run at high head pressures. Your electric bill will thank you :)

If you want a silent pump that is also external consider a velocity T4. I have used these for years & you do not hear them at all..... The only problem some have with these is they can add a little heat into the tank. You do not hear them at all....

Eheims are also excellent pumps however not sure how they hold up being run externally??

Then mod a maxijet.... you will have lots of flow in there:)

The T4 would be quite a bit less flow vs a iwaki 55. I forget what the pump flows at 5ish foot of head.... probably around 900-1000 gph?

I had a T4 on my 90g reef & it definantly wasn't to much flow. They are totally silent!!
