My buddy and I were hitting up some fish stores in the Los Angeles area when we stumbled upon a large group of Nigripes Clowns. He's a breeder in San Diego and I'm just a simple hobbiest.

BUT: We made a breeding pair from the group (for him) and I have a family group of 4 in my 270gal reef tank.

Here is to HOPE! Maybe some captive bred/raised Nigripes in the future.

Best of luck with them :)

They are great breeders once they get started. IME Make sure to feed the fry high quality food or they'll be ugly brown.

They are neat clowns, but unfortunately I don't think there is a big market for them so you may get left holding a bunch of fish.

JJFLY,
There was a guy a few years ago that had spawned and raised these guys on RC. They are by far one of my favs. But you will have to market them toward other breeders or sell them to a place like Inland Aquatics to get what you deserve for them. They can also be poor shippers even tank raised ones. But I do think you can sell them. QM seems to have them and sell them pretty regular. But don't expect big bucks. And to average people they are not that pretty. But again I think they are. So you don't want to take every nest from the parents and raise them the way you would for Percula. If you do it will be like LargeAngels said. Hope that helps.

Hiya Amy,

Nice to see you still around :)

They are one of my favorites as well, but definitely overlooked by most clown buyers.

Hey Scott,
Yep I'm still doing my thing....never stopped. I have some personal reasons for making myself more visible. And I have a soft spot for RC as well. So I will be around more from now on. And you are right this is one of the most under rated clowns. And I hope you still have the most beautiful pair I've ever seen. When they are orange like yours they are to die for.

Sad news Amy, I lost Cujo(the female for new to the clown area folks) :( Almost got out of the hobby entirely over that event, probably would have if I did not have a batch of her youngsters to make me pay attention. Youngsters never developed the orange levels of Cujo or even dad. Maybe I never got the top dressing right.

Still have Mr. Cujo, he looks good, although I assume he is moving toward Female status in his current quarters, mixed with some semi bonded ocellaris. He is far more gentle then Cujo ever displayed, almost timid vs her dominating personality.

Have not been actively breeding anything for quite awhile now, still have the gasters and B&W ocellaris laying eggs, but no time or drive to raise any...maybe this winter.

Glad you are dropping in on your own terms and with whatever time you have available, your experience is tough to replace.

I hope life is treating you and yours in the best of ways and to the fullest.

Cheers.

Scott,

This is so sad to hear I loved her. I can only imagine how you must feel. I lost a blue assessor male named Murphy once that made me feel the same way. But I have found buying more does help the pain some. But it would be hard to find another like Cujo. Take care of her babies. You never know that color may show up again. And thank you for the kind words I need to hear it these days. Again I'm going to try and be around more. It will help me get over some things.

Brown Polymnus and Akindynos are still my favorite clowns I've raised up. You have good taste Apercula ! I don't have to even say how special Percs are.....there are so many threads on RC about that one fish. That says it all.
