Jacob's 360 Gallon Build

Jake can you snap a pic of the FW? Let us know if FWE works on the little boogers. As Jonathan mentioned, luckily they were only in the QT. Guess the QT served its purpose :)

I will try to get a pic of them, they're so small it might not look like much. I'm not extremely concerned about flat worms anyway, but if I can remove them I will. Going to try FWE today, need to do a WC anyway.

Sandra's tank had them for years and they never bothered anything as far as I could tell, been FW free over a year now.

Oh, and yes, the QT severed its purpose. Good reason to QT at least 8 weeks for everything.

QT is a good idea! I've been having issues with QTing some fish, specifically a 6-line so I've been FW dipping but know I need to QT more.

Problem is I can only have the QT in the garage right now, so my QT season is kaput :(

You can always use fans to cool the QT, just don't forget to top off every day. Fish only need a little light, and most corals don't need the levels that they'd get in your display, so heat added from lights can be almost negligible (i.e. 2x 24w T5). Plankton used to have his display tank in his garage with about 1000w of halides above it and he only cooled it with fans.

Even in the 120+ degree oven it becomes in the summer? I figured with a 20g it heats up pretty darn quick. I have a cheapo T5 hood that is NO not HO that provides sufficient light. I'm just worried about baking them :)

Yep... kind of hard to break down a 200g SPS tank and move it inside the house every summer ;) I think he also added a humidistat and exhaust fan to his garage to keep it from getting nasty in there, this is Scott aka Plankton I'm referring to.

Evaporative cooling is underestimated, however on a 20g you'd probably need an auto top off to keep salinity swings in check.

OK - finally a real progress update with some pictures. We have lighting after a short two years in the works! You'll have to visit my blog to get the full (lengthy) story of course :)

Here's a teaser pic...

This is one of my "boxes of light". The idea being that it's small enough and light enough to just tilt up, move to the side, or completely remove easily enough for access to the tank. We'll see...

Anyway, things should start to move a little faster now... I hope :D

Nice work Jacob! Definitely taking your time has paid off in the craftsmanship dept! Off to the blog now ;)

I don't know about this Jacob, two years to get lights working.
Being an electrician that gives me the horrors.
I think I have to run out to California tomorrow to check this light out :D

Thanks Brian. At one point I had actually built a canopy but decided to scrap it and start over. I reused all of the wood but it was hard to come to grips with spending so much time to re-do everything.

Well... it didn't exactly take me two years to get the lights working, I might have had one or two other things to do during that time :D I wish I had my electrical panel an PLC all wired up to show off for you. That will be coming shortly down the road.... but come on out to Cali anyway and have a look at my tank of rocks ;)

Actually Jacob, I have been an electrician for 40 years and I am embarassed to show off my panel.

I put together the duct tie in's and got the air exchange up and running for a trial last night. The configuration is temporary for now, but the good news is that it worked!

Since the stand is still open I just plugged the ducting going to it and ran only the ducts that go to the canopy, or BOL's as I refer to them. I tested for air leaks by lighting an incense and watching the smoke. Everything sealed up tight, or at least tight enough that I couldn't find any suction leaks. I pulled the plastic wrap off and let it run all night... not a drop of condensation inside the BOL's this morning. Usually they would be dripping wet, especially in the morning.

This weekend was spent taking care of the kids for the most part but I was able to work on some of the smaller details/tasks on the tank, so it's coming along. Corals will be in there by next weekend I predict.

I think we need more pictures

I'm not taking any pics of my "temporary" stuff, but once it's finalized I'll be happy to snap a few more :D

There's no easy way to say what I'm about to, so I'll just say it...

;)

I have fish inbound!

This Thursday I'll be receiving my first 3 fish. A pair of Golden Butterflies (C. Semilarvatus) and a male Watanabe angel. I'm really excited! These were all fish that were on my list, they were all fish I had as candidates to add first, and of course because this means that I'm "almost there".

I'm starting to move corals over tonight and will be done by Wednesday night. The QT will be all ready to go for the fish when they arrive Thursday morning. They'll be living in the QT for the next 8 weeks.

:bum:

oh, and in case Brianbigoats is reading this, I told you if I found the male watanabe that he was going in my tank :P

Congrats Jake! Talking to you on the phone, you can totally hear the excitement in your voice :) Good stuff my friend.

Congrat on getting so close i have read your blog from the beginning and its been along time coming to you. Those are both beautiful fish good luck.

Jacob, don't forget to put 20 pennies to the gallon in there to control ich.
In that tank that would be 6,279 pennies
