I saw this AIO setup, for $49.99, with free shipping from PetCo, and couldn't resist.

I've got some live sand and bottom of the tank crud from Premium Aquatics, a nice small piece of dead rock, and a couple of gallons of saltwater running through it next to my desk right now (still cloudy, but already clearing).

I'm going with the stock equipment with the obvious exception of the addition of a small 50w heater, which fits easily in one of the filter chambers in the back of the tank. I'm loving the clean look and lines of this tank already.

Once the cycle finishes am planning on adding some tough beasties (as my classroom experiences serious temperature swings on a regular basis). My current plan is to populate it with Aiptasia and Majano and the snails and crabs and shrimp that can withstand them.

sounds like a cool setup for breeding berghia there was a contest a while ago where people used those tanks pretty nice

I recently added a mantis shrimp to the 4g tank...

Ohhhhhhhhhh boy!!!!

I have that same aio setup but decided to use something else...very neat!

I have a cpl mantis shrimp and absolutely LOVE them. It appears yours might be a P. ciliata? It's a spearer, yes?

I had one of those mantis shrimps in my Clownfish growout system.

Over 200 baby clownfish in a 75 gallon and the population seemingly kept getting smaller for no apparent reason. No dead bodies. No evidence whatsoever. But I was holding some liverock in there for somebody. I kept wondering if the baby clowns were hiding in the rockwork.

When I finally found the mantis he was 'clownfish orange' in color.

Kewl 4 gallon setup. Love the macroalgae. Not the mantis!

Interesting Gary! I wonder if yours was a ciliata as well. I'm not so sure that it was orange from its diet or from all of the clowns in the tank. They will periodically change solors to suit their environments after a molt.

Love it! I just started a 2.2g pico and wanted a Smithii for it. Just hard to find one. Might just do sexy shrimp. Good luck with it :)

Brian, we have a "Where to find mantis shrimp" thread in the mantis forum. That might help your search perhaps.

I would LOVE a smithii as well and always keep my eye out for them.

clowns WERE it's diet... :lolspin:

Needless to say, I didn't search for a new home for my mantis.

I have a few kinds of macro algae growing in a clump in the tank (it has some aiptasia and majano mixed in as well) and last night Kiwi went through it quite carefully, and pulled out enough strands of chaeto to make a ball that he's using as a door at the front of his cave...I love this guy!

I just added some snails and caulerpa to Kiwi's tank, and he is happily cracking shells as I work.

He has dug a network of tunnels under the 2 rocks in his tank, and likes to watch me when he thinks I'm not aware of it from the different "doorways" in his 2 houses.

I got an order from reefcleaners yesterday with some macro and snails for my tanks, and after dumping some of the snails into my Mantis tank, I noticed a tiny white thing floating/swirling around in the water...after a while it attached to the side, and I got a good look at it.

It's about a centimeter long when fully extended, and white...like a grain of rice. It has a pair of black antennae coming off the front end, and has been patrolling the front of the tank all day.

I can't find anything similar googling "white nudibranch", but I'm not worried, as this is a pest tank, I added some caulerpa yesterday to balance the aiptasia and majano...

Sorry for the pic, but it's the best I could manage at work...

This sounds really fun. Can your students get up close to the tank? We have students with their noses pressed to the sides of the tank all the time here.

I had an awesome moment today during an end of the day study hall...Kiwi cracked a snail to bits, and threw the pieces outside of his hole, and one of my students was close enough to hear and then see what was going on...she asked what was happening in the tank, and I explained about Kiwi...then Kiwi decided to redecorate the tank a bit, and to switch to his alternate tunnel under the smaller rock in the tank...the flurry of activity and sand flying around in the water drew them all in, and they oohed and ahhed about how pretty Kiwi is...they're excited because I promised to bring in some shrimp to feed him tomorrow morning!
