Hey guys,
I have a trip to Tokyo planned for spring break (March 7-12) and was wondering if anyone whos been has some suggestions on public aquariums/stores etc. I have a friend living there now that is going to take us to the "touristy" and local hot spots but if time permits, id like to check the hobby scene there.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Theo

Just came back from Japan. I visited Tokyo, Yokahama, Narita, Kyoto and Nagasaki.

Yokahama and Tokyo has a public aquariums but the fishes and corals are not impressive. In fact it does not look good. Most corals were softies and fishes didnt look healthy. it was a wate of time and money for me.

If i was you, i would visit the Imperial Palace, Golden Palace, Kyoto, Peace Museum and mt fuji.

I've never been there, but I know there are certain varieties of fish and coral that are collected around Japan are not exported. So I would think that if you could find a good LFS, might see some interesting things there.

Yes!!!!

I have been twice!

From my experiences, the BEST aquarium there is the Tokyo Sealife Park. It was amazing! They have this enormous tank for maguro (tuna). They also have a very nice reef section as well. I was very impressed. The aquarium is located outside the city by Tokyo Disneyland.

There is also a great fish store that I went to called pau pau in Downtown Tokyo next to tsukiji fish market. Which happens to be the one of largest fish markets in Japan! If you want the BEST sushi you will ever have, eat there at one of the restraunts. Its a little pricey, but well worth it ;)!!! There were people that had come down all the way form Hokkaido and all over Japan to eat there!! When you're done, you can walk on over to pau pau :)

There's also a sea life park in Yokohama, but wasn't as impressed. Its right on the water as well. Don't go unless you have extra time.

Have fun!!

Theo, come by and I have Japanese magazines for reefing w/ list of Japanese LFS stores. Find out which part of Tky your friend live and maybe w/ the help of my wife, we can try to figure out the nearest LFS in Tky to your friend's house.

There is an interesting FW store on the river near Ichigaya station. No saltwater of any kind, but still interesting to browse. Especially the planted tanks.

There is a great fish store near Kasuda & Tokyo Dome. Not cheap, but lots of nice SPS and specimen LPS. I can't remember the name, but if you need more info LMK and I will look into it.

BTW, watch out for Roy's magazines. :-)

While you're their - "check out this place"

Thats actually the place I went to in Yokohama.

They have some nice set-ups, some big dolphin tanks. But there overall reef section was not very impressive. They have a sweet pair of polar bears though :)

This is actually a MUCH nicer set-up :)

Trust me ;)

Ok. So i found out im staying near Ebisu in Shibuya-Ku.

ROAB,
HAHA. I didnt know youd be interested in travelling to Japan. You usually end up at much more "exotic" places ;)

Shibuya is crazy! Ebisu huh? Thats on the Yamanote line. I stayed at Omori station both times I went.

The rail pass is a must! Can't go wrong there. I spent more money on the train and bus there than I did on anyting else.

Here is a shot of Shibuya station right after the New Years

Theres a Ramen shop in Shinjyuku a couple of stations away from Shibuya. Its called Ramen Jiro. The place awsome! If you like noodles, try to check it out!

Your in a great part of town. Lots of cool stuff to do around there.

Do you speak/study any Japanese?

Jim

ask radiolunatic for some of the magazine, there is advertising on local pet stores in tokyo, osaka, okinawa....

I have some but I am in SF. You can borrow them, if not I can send you the links of the website of stores and you can decide from there. If you do plan to go searching for stores, it is going to be a field day : )

Hhhhmmmm Shibuya ... a great place for "eye candies" ... well look at the pic above ... :)
amgbenz ... how are you, man? Are you back on reefing?

they don't have real models anymore, just anime on their billboards, wow
the real models are on the streets :)

Roy,
Not back into reefing hardcore but im still looking for a larger tank - about 100 gallons. Have you setup the new tank yet?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. If time permits, and if i am close, i think i will try and check out some LFS's and the public aquarium mentioned above. At the very least, i plan on checking out the fish market. I hear its a cool place.

Theo ... go bigger, so you don't have to upgrade, especially if the price is right, You have followed my progress, started with 46g and now I am on my 4th and hopefully last upgrade.
I have not set up mine yet. The tank is coming this Sunday.

theo forget the fish stores u should be at the club hollering at the japanese women. u have no time chasing down fish stores while you should be chasing women..LOL jp.
