Japanese tanks...(revived)

very impressive tanks.. nice to see the japanese adapting artwork to chaos... as they always try to do. i think the goal of every reefer is to understand the basics on how to keep these animals alive and then expand on the limits of health, after all, not all reefs are created with shipwrecks! Hats off to all those folks takin care of there pets.
and happy new year to you!:)

Been struggling through the AltaVista translation of this amazing site... Found this to be hilarious.

The mandarin ? ? excessively there is no favorite fish,
but it is, because color is exorbitant)
There is no
ginger.

Some amazing stuff, certainly.

Happy new year, everyone, and remember --

There is no ginger.

Wow! Here it is again!

And, by his pulls and by his has been
settled the ? ? with the coming out shell of the ????
which is put out as a rammer pot shrewdly.
There is no
ginger?

I wonder what that's all about? O_o

Wow! I say wow firstly not because of the tanks, but because of the comments I have had to read through. I say "had to" because I didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want to comment until I read everything because that would be biased and unfair. I was deeply disturbed by some of the comments so I felt like I had to write a response. Keep in mind that this is only my opinion. Its upsetting to me that we have some people on the boards here who feel it is necessary to make such negative comments on others tanks, who obviously fake or not, are beautiful. Pardon me for saying this but as a sociology major I evaluate perspectives and look very deeply into them. IMO as Americans we subconsciously feel we are somehow superior to others. I think the fact that this post was prefaced with "Japanese" we (some of us) automatically have to become somewhat defensive of our own techniques, systems, and aquariums. So what if these guys have "crazy" systems or a bunch of dosing pumps. I have never seen anyone called crazy on the boards for wanting to put 1000's of watts of lights on their tank. And besides, so what if they take 100's of hours cleaning their tanks. We as hobbyists who strive for conversation should be happy that there are people in this world who take this hobby this seriously and are willing to take the time and money to do it as "properly" as they can. Many feel like the tanks do not look natural. Well how natural does your 55 or 100 gallon cube look compared to the ocean. I just feel like some of the comments were out of jealously, were totally irrelevant, and had a western superiority connotation about them. It just seems a little sad that we have to become negative others tanks. Let me pose a question to all those who have felt like they needed to be negative about these tanks. Would your comments be the same if these tanks were prefaced with "German" or "American"?

This is a joke right?

I think the hobby is particualry interesting over there because of the unique fish they get. This first pic is of a juvenile flying fish

I'll let you guess what this is. Well, the name is Lethotremus awae. It took me a while to find out anything about this fish.

Actually tom1356 it wasnt a joke. Did i say something that sounded FUNNY TO YOU. Maybe you can comment and let me know why you thought it to be funny and combat it somehow.

Solitaryensis

Well the whole thing was very funny.
You strongly imply that the people on this board who questioned whether these tanks were set up for pictures are racist. You shout from your high horse that these are only your opinions and yet chastise others for stating theirs. You might be surprised to know not everyone is out to get you. Or the Japanese. There are very good reasons to believe some of these tanks are photographed soon after setup. If you have proof otherwise lets hear it. By the way who was forcing you to read anything on this board?

he just called you out TOM.

I agree with Solytaryensis. Why cant some of us accept the fact that some tanks are better than others.

Funny how we never blinked or questioned German tanks. I see posts like, "WOW!! Check out what the Germans are doing?" But when it came to this thread, some started to question the validity of these Japanese tanks!

German, American or Japanese I give props to those who deserve it.:)

I know some speculate that some of these tanks were photographed after setup...but remember that it was speculation.

Do you really know for a FACT that these were.

You need to see my tank and I swear to you and numerous reefers can attest to this, that my tank was not setup up yesterday. LOL. ( I think I have a nice tank.hehe)

You just need to work on your tank some more bro!

sps_guy

I am sure you know that what I said was-

"There are very good reasons to believe some of these tanks are photographed soon after setup. "

Clearly not a statement of fact.

I have 10+ years of experience in this hobby. I don't need anyone to tell me that some of those pictures would not have been possible a few days before they were taken. As you have never seen my tank, you should probably re-think commenting on it.
Developing a thick skin will serve you well in life. There are far to many battles.
Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m sure your tank is very nice ( I have seen very few bad tanks).

Tom1356,
If you had read my first couple of sentences, I explained that I read all the posts because I didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t want to state my OPINION without doing so. I think it would be unfair to everyone if I did because it is important that I distinguish my comments as they were directed towards a certain few. Above all that I am a reefer and I read these posts and have a right to do so just as you do. We wouldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t all bother posting comments and responding to them if we didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t all have something in common and were interested in furthering the hobby. Secondly I donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t understand how you can come to the conclusion that I am shouting from my high horse. I never said anyone was wrong and I didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t chastise them for doing so. This forum is an arena for opinion and comments and I understand that. Maybe you donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t. You personally attacked me by copying my comment and making it out to be a joke. I was very serious about what I said. I NEVER implied in anyway that anyone was out to get me. I wasnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t questioning the validity of the tanks because that is not the point. My point here is that we shouldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t bash these peopleââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s tanks because ours arenââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t like theirs, and how it was funny that we donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t bash German reef tanks. You can call that a racist remark or you can extrapolate whatever you would like from it but I was merely bringing up a point. I was in no way implying that reefers on this board were at all racist. And besides, SO WHAT if they were photographed after setup. Is it wrong to make your tank look its best before taking pics? Donââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t you comb your hair and put on nice clothes when you take pics? I merely stated my opinion on the matter. So to say that ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œYou might be surprised to know not everyone is out to get youââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ was totally irrelevant. Like I said in my previous comment. Would you care to combat my comment and not me?

I have seen Jans tank, and it is amazing. Lord knows it was not setup yesterday! He went through a lot of stuff to get it where it is today. The best was when he "experimented" with water from the Steinhart Aquarium!
Anyway, it would be nice if someone here could sort out the mystery of Japanese Tanks. IMO the pics of German tanks I have seen pretty much smoke the best of American Reeftanks. They have a different approach to reefkeeping (using ozone, CC skimmes, etc.), and it seems to be working for them. About the only "American Tank" I have seen that competes with the German tanks is Wayne Shang's tank. The Japanese tanks bring it to a whole new level, and it is indeed quite mysterious. It may just be, however, that German and Japanese reef tanks fit my tastes better. Either way, any reef tank that is stable and can properly support its inhabitants is something to be very proud of.

Jan,

Their corals are MUCH better than the stuff in LA! I reckon they get them locally. Either way, the prices I have seen are not sooo bad for what they are. I will gladly pay $120 bucks for a colony like the pics I have posted.
