IMO those 2 sps pics look awesome. The only thing that doesn't look naturals is the mix and no alga anywahere not even a little. But they could have cleaned it up before the pic... probally like alot of ppl would. i think a hog pog of sps looks better than a hog pog of softies,sps,lps ,anemone ooh wait that's my tank
. any way they look good to me. The other 2 I didn't care for . The equipment room look good but all the dosing containers I would do with out. JMO

WOW, unbelievable equipment on that persons tank! All those dosers, to add what, 10ml per week of each of those additives? lol
Even with the obvious saturation enhancement of at least on of the tank pics, they are beautiful. I guess it depends what you are looking for in a reef aquarium; some strive their entire lives to be "natural" (whatever that is) while others want a piece of "living art". Heck, when you only have a couple square feet instead of miles, why not "push" natures beauty a little?
As for the cleanliness, my japanese is a little rusty (NOT!) but from that CP site it seems that most of the tanks pictured are only a few months old.

Ok, they look great and give me the feeling I should pay an admittance just to look at them. Anyone else get that feeling?
I'd love to have something that looked like one of those tanks, complete with the launch center, water treatment facility, and nuclear reactor cooling system boiler room. I can see about 3 to 4 years of my salary just to set some of those systems up and wondering who I could borrow from to maintain and keep it up to date. OH Heck, I'll just pay the admittance charge to look, and enjoy the lower maintenance, more cost effective system that I call my own!!! ( But if I won Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes I might reconsider

I respect their taste and some of yours, but besides they look extremely clean, we know that is just a "fake picture". No tank can look like that all the time if you don't spend hours per day cleanning it. Or maybe they clean for 12 hours just for the picture, what is just disgusting if you think real. To take pictures they have beeing doing this clean tanks just for that moment. And most of us have seen those backgrounds that they sell at the LFS (just like that ; ). Those tanks are just a moment display to me. In other hand, we could have something similar to that if we keep cucumbers and urchins in a certain number (remember that caribean system?). Then, we can just wipe the glass kinda fast for the pics. Well, I still prefer the american way to do that! It's just a different thing that looks nice and too artificial. I prefer the natural "junky" coraline display. Nice corals!!! I love the way the keep the equipment and that should be a great example of organization for all of us.

I personally don't think that reef tanks should be "rugged". I for one have lost a few nice corals trying the rugged approach. Now some of the tanks I have seen on Japanese sites do look like instant reef, but ask yourself..."If I could buy equipment to help me prevent these precious creatures from dying would I do it?" I think that the answer would be yes. The only thing that I don't like about Japanese sights is that they are hard to translate. Now I have seen some American and European tanks with the same equipment as the ones we have seen from Japan. As a matter a fact you if you look at the sump pic I posted earlier that doser and the chemical are from GroTech. I personally think (hope) that I don't need this much equipment to have a great looking tank but, if I had the opportunity to buy it (Lottery, Inheritance, Act of God) I think that I could turn into a LFS Wet Dream

GroTechI have to say I like all the pics. I praise the japanese for their devotion. They for some reason or another, will strive till death to acheive whatever it is they have set forth to do. They will spend millions of hours doint one thing, not to mention money.
I like the clean look. I would not call it sterile. Its clean. It shows control and dedication. Which all or most japanese are known for. I do not beleive they are fake.
Japanese have always had a gift for creating art with many forms of medium. This is one of them. They create beautiful works of art, whether they last just long enough for a photo or 5 years, the dedication and drive is what I like the most.
However, the necessity of all those pumps, dosers, mechanical boxes and such are overkill. There is a fine line between acceptable and extreme. Those pics show somone who has crossed it. There is no need for such "accurate" machines. Only in public displays or endangered species tanks or something similar. Not in home aquaria, but that is just me.
Whatever the drive or ambition one may have, whether the pics be true or fake, enjoy the art that has been created. Strive for excellence as they do, best of all, have fun.

Go look at Sanjays old 180 or even the 500g. Go look at the Steves tank 1yr old 500g post they look fake also. they are just as clean. I'm sure up close they look real. Top of my sand looks white the sides don't but those sps tanks look good. The camera can also enhance the colors?? Dunno don't have one but look at all the featured tanks alot of those look fake also. Fake because the have good color no hair alga? I would rather have that than the rugged look. I got a couple of rugged areas to pull out right now.. JMO

Alas, I do not think any of these tanks are fake. The absence of algae is due to, IMO, the fact that most of these tanks are lit by directional HQI's that put the light where it needs to be (on the corals) on not on the front and side glass. They also have VERY low fish loads, and seem to have their water chemistry squared away pretty well (if their equipment rooms mean anything).
Like Ironreef said, there are people on this board who have tanks this clean; they just are not designed the same way as these tanks.

Yeah Kris, have fun is what's all about. I just din't think that I would have fun (enjoy) if I would have to spend hours to produce an art like that for pics. I'm sure they do have fun and they should be doing that, if they like. But again, I respect all of you that admire and I respect the japanese. I still think that it is a "fake picture" of what the nature gives us and what a "normal home tank" (without all those hours of work, the only explanation to me, I can be wrong here!) would be. Not comparing american tanks nor other tanks around the globe, but just those particular "too clean stuff" in those glass (?) boxes. It's just taste... And I respect 'cause it is part of their culture, yes. Please don't get me wrong, ok people?

Another thing... in some time any tank will loose the hair algae. Any tank will have a look similar to those after coulple of years (but not so clean, hehe). The only difference is if you do not have the glass with the algae/metal halides. They don't have snails a lot(?) to keep that. They do not have urchins (?). Has to be by hand then. If they have good calcium and alk for the corals (and I do believe the have!!) they should have coraline and other algae. I like the way the landscape is done. They have almost no fish, as far as we see. That's another fact to help the clean tank. I call "fake picture" 'cause I believe that they make up them. Again, they have fun, and that's what's all about!! Anyone can make that .

You also must remember, Japanese are notorious for SIMPLE, SLEEK, ELEGANT and FINE LINES. They want NO clutter, NO mess. They get to the heart and soul of what they want, and expand on it.
