JBNY's 270 Ver2.0

Wonderful colors Joe, saturated bright pigments means happy acros. :)
I love that pale skinned with fluoro yellow highlights frag - that's going to be an acro that catches your eye every time you look at the tank once the reef grows in

Thanks Andrew, Yeah I agree that one is going to be something special when it grows up!

Looks like those frags are in a happy zone!

Thanks Kieth, they definitely are!

Your Ver2 look amazing already. 10 years ago your tank is the one that I inspired the most.
I'm on the same boat as you, When all my frags turn to colony my interest on the hobby start to fade away so I start selling it just to start all over again.

Those frags look stunning. My fav is the Poison Ivy - this is going to look stunning as a colony.

Any new info on the tank Joe? How is the Arid reactor performing?

Tank is doing very well. Coloration on the frags is still doing really good. I had been having issues with the growth in the ARID reactor. Chaeto growth was very slow, but still enough that I was able to keep both N and P low enough that I had to dose KNO3 to keep N at 5ppm. So back in September after talking to a friend about tips burning on my acros he suggested I start dosing some brightwell trace elements, and see if that doesn't help out. It looks like it is helping on the SPS, but it looks like the chaeto started growing again at a more normal pace within a few weeks of dosing. So the ARID reactor seems to be doing much better now.

Coral faded just a little on some of the frags, but I had a bunch of changes on the tank over the last few weeks that could be the reason. The few changes that happened over the last few weeks.

Did my yearly change of my MH bulbs, put new Radiums over the tank.

Both of my Gyres started to slow down so I had to clean them, flow is back to normal now.

I also added 11 fish to the tank, 3 leopard wrasse, 3 chalk bass, and 4 melenarus wrasses. For the wrasses all went in as females to let them decide who will change to a male.

+1

On the fence ,getting one.

So far I really like mine. I wish it was a little easier to clean but that is about it.

Thanks, I agree that poison Ivy is going to look awesome. I got it as such a tiny frag though, it might take some time to get to a decent size.

So, Joe, you're saying that the brightwell trace elements helped give the cheato a boost in growth?

That's a serious infusion of fish.. Nice fish!

I'm not sure, I wrote to the one or two people I knew had been having problems growing cheato in the past, both are not using macro algae anymore due to poor growth. Hopefully they will try again and see if the trace elements work.

I have been giving this a lot of thought, about the trace element thing, and I am thinking that maybe some of the reasons I saw such a good response was that I had been using GFO for many years, and that the GFO is pulling a lot of other elements not just PO4. Anyway, I would love to see if my theory is correct, just nee more people to try it.

As for the fish. I am trying to not have to dose nitrates, I had been feeding 8 cubes of frozen food a day and 3-4 big pinches of pellet food and still am dosing, so I am just going to keep adding fish until I can get the Nitrates up without dosing.

Looks like I'm gonna drink the Kool-Aide, ARID, in the works.

I think you will be happy, the thing works. I had a lot of talks with Jake and Unique Corals at RAP NY and I know they ordered a unit shortly after. Now from reading the RB blog it looks like Jake is seeing good results from the unit too. Good Luck!

You can, I had been using 18 hours ON and 6 Off for the ARID, I have it down to 12 Hours on and 12 Off now. I am fine with having more fish in the tank, just a change in my mindset from when I had only a few fish in the tank for fear of having too many nutrients.

Not that you'd want to do this in your application but how do you feel about running cheato with 24/7 lighting?
Just curious about your thoughts on lighting algea 24/7..
Good, bad, doesn't matter... I sort of assume that like any organism which lives off of light, it would need at least some rest time to be efficient.. I guess his is a question for a biologist..
Maybe the guys at pax bellum have an opinion..
Thoughts, experiences?

It's a big mindset change for sure- going from selecting the few must have fish to being able to stock tons of fish. At least now no one asks "where are the fish?"

Another question..
You run a car reactor.. What about pumping the effluent from it into the cheato reactor to both allow the cheato to benefit from the co2 and also lower the co2 concentration in the system..
I'm thinking of running my ca reactor effluent into my fuge for this reason..
Maybe the high flow turn over in the arid reactor would reduce the benefits of this.. Not sure..

I have googled the heck out of arid reactors and cannot find the avenue to purchase one??? are they even available?

It's not the best way. The most efficient way of growing it is 18 hours of light. It is similar to growing Phytoplankton and other algae based organisms. I use to do the same lighting schedule when I was growing Nannochloropsis phyoplankton. Pax-Bellum also states to have no more than 18 hours of light.

Yeah, there are a lot of fish in the tank for sure, but I have really tried to keep all the fish small in size. It does a lot to the tank to have so many small fish, it looks like the tank is constantly in motion. Very cool.

That is exactly what I am doing. I had them fit a a Ca reactor injection port at the intake of the ARID Reactor.

You have to email them.
