Indeed, very good

Sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your tank man. I can sort of relate in that I had an old 90 gallon tank in which I had very good success with sps. I setup a 130 gallon about a year ago and it's been nothing but problems since. My sps coloration is good overall but my growth is no where near what I think it should be (compared to my old tank). It's really weird that you are having issues in the same tank. I really hope Triton works for you and will definitely be following along!

Some updated pics. Things are looking good.

Things are looking very bloody good Joe, your SSC colors are popping again and the growth is very noticeable mate :)

Can you please get off your behind and glue those bloody worms that are puking all over the acros..........:p

Thanks Andrew, I'm very happy with tank right now.

ugh, those worms are are nightmare! I tried to put epoxy in the holes but it only works about half the time, the other half the epoxy just pops out. I'll have to try another method to get in there with glue or something. :uzi:

Fantastic, Joe! There can be no doubt about the recovery in your tank.
It is clear that the issues are behind you.
I have found that the only sure way of dealing with those tube worms is with a good sharp pair of long nose pliers. Crush crush crush.
When glued, they usually just burrow a new hole right beside and keep on trucking...
AND, they multiply quick if they are happy so stay on top of them.. I have seen them really irritate acros.. To the point of browning them out.

Thanks Matt. I agree, it looks to be in recovery mode. Very Happy.

Do you find crushing them works? I thought I had read I should not snap the tubes off as it can help them proliferate in the tank.

trying to control these worms will be my next hurdle to over come. They are all over, I did a good job last month on them but they grow back so quickly.

I don't think snapping off the tube helps them prolferate unles the stress puts them into reproductive mode... I haven't seen that. But snapping off the tube doesn't work because they can retract beyond that part of the tube, unfortunately you really have to dig in a bit to get to the body of the worm.
The end of the tube is usually straight but deeper in, it usually twirls a but, making it tougher to get to it.
I've wondered if a needle with Kalk, or boiling water injected as deep as possible may do the trick but I've never tried that..

I tried to get in there with some vinegar and kalk a few times but they have a plate that they use to seal off the chamber and it is tough to get anything past that to the snail inside.

Looking good Joe

Many thanks!

Thanks, I am starting to think that the tank, for whatever reason, became depleted in a few key trace elements. The lack of those elements was what had been causing my problems with SPS. I was running a calcium reactor and most likely there was little to no trace elements coming out of the reactor. My lack of water changes over an extended time when I was doing renovation/not keep the tank up, coupled with the age of the tank (8 years) probably helped to reduce those elements to low enough levels that the acros were not happy. Doing water changes seems to help to boost the health of the acros for short time. After a few months of only doing water changes every two weeks, it is possible that those elements were being used up too quickly for the water changes alone to make up the difference.

With the dosing that I am doing now, I am adding in extra trace elements everyday. I think that it is those trace elements that are making the difference. Now as to what those elements actually are, that is what I am trying to find out.

All my basic parameters are exactly the same as they were before, and really the same as they have been for the past year. Alk 7.3, Ca 450, Mg 1400.

Have you tried to pierce it with a needle? I have no idea how hard the shell may be

The shell is pretty hard. I tried to pierce it with a small syringe that I have, but I couldn't get through the shell. I am going to try and pick up a sharp SS probe that I can use to really put some pressure on the shell to try and break it open.

Joe, your corals look amazing. They definitely bounced back really quick.
It's interesting you mentioned about the possibility of the depletion of certain trace elements.
I am wondering if the chaeto in the reactor is the cause of the depletion of these elements.

I am super glueing the snails in my tank if I can. Seems to help a bit but I hate and want them gone. But not to the point of bleaching the rock or anything.

Why did you switch to dosing from the calcium reactor?

Corey

How did I not see this thread. Looking good Joe. I followed your old build and looking forward to seeing this one progress

Many thanks ksed, I am hopeful that my issues are behind me. While I am still going with the trace elements deficiency theory, I do not think it is related to the cheato. I added the ARID rector and cheato into this system in dec 2014, but I had this acro problem at least 9 months to a year prior.

The snails are a pain for sure. I epoxied a few more in their holes last night and will clip a bunch more tonight. but I have so many of them, super gluing them is tough as I can't really pull the rock out. All my rock was dead marco rock so I really don't know how I got them in the tank, but they easily could have come on some other piece that was put in the tank too.

As to why I switched out the Ca reactor see this post

Thanks, I'll will update the old thread too just to keep people who still follow it up to speed. But this is the main thread now, more focused on SPS rather than the tank build.

not yet, I still can't make up my mind. I have it working so well with one pump, breaking it up and using two or three is what I should eventually do. I just can't make a decision.

When I revamped my tank, I used all Marco rocks that should have no pest. But now, I find a lot of Aiptasia on the rocks. I think some of my frozen food has pest in them. Now I boil them first before I feed the fish. I don't know if this would help my problem. I have a file fish which needs to be starved for him to work on aiptasia.

Aptasia can come in on anything, you have to be always vigilant with looking for it. Once it's in you tank it almost impossible to get rid of. I had it in plague proportions last year, got a copperband and he eat it all from the DT tank but I still have it in the overflows and in the frag tank.
