Jebao WP40, a knockoff, yet getting a lot of attention lately!

So.. I figured I would start this one up in our area, as this pump has garnered quite a bit of attention on multiple reef forms all over.

Like many others who already own pumps either by Vortech or Tunze, curiosity has gotten to the cat as far as how this pump can't move the amount of water that I can if not more, for a small fraction of the price.

Intial feedback from new users / owners from other discussion forums have been positive to say the least.

For those of you in our area, what has been your experience so far?

I myself have also ordered one to amuse myself and to feed my curiosity. What would be interesting, is for those of you who are DIY types, have you been able to tweak or mod the pump to be able to be controlled by an APEX or other controller?

I like what i see but idk. I already love my tunzes and really dont want to go cheap on pumps when spending lots of $$$ on the reef. Imma let everyone else try it out then jump on board later if most reviews are good. Again im a tunze fan and my 6105s been good to me. Unlike other parts of my tank.

Only tunze and vortech for me man. I don't trust any Chinese copycat. My tunzes never had any reliability issues. Sure the Jebo moves a lot if water but tell me 5 years from now if it is still working. My concern with power heads is not just reliability but stray voltage.

Kind of how I look at it is tunze and vortech are so overpriced to begin with! I've seen a few able to get years out of a tunze, but I have never personally or known someone else to get more than a few years out of a vortech without having to be rebuilt or having major issues. I'm sure it's been done I just have neve heard of it. I don't mess around with cheap lighting, but a pump for moving water... Sign me up!

+1, only had one tunze fail on me in all these years and Rodger took care of me (had plenty of tunzes, 5 currently) . Wonder about longevity of these pumps and service? Also, it uses it's own controller. Keeping my eye on it though.

I can't wait to get the 2 WP40's that I ordered to try out. Still need to find the 0-10v modules to work with APEX.

Maybe I'll be able to put my 2 tunze 6105's with 7095 contorller up for sale :)

I picked up 2 for around ~$56 (after conversion) directly in Shanghai. No shipping because they are in the luggage.

Wow. That is one heck of a price. It's amazing what international shipping does to product pricing.

Here's to water movement in a reef tank!

I'll post a response that I sent another member through PM when I received a question regarding this pump:

"A few things that I've noticed after using the pump for 3-4 days now. This may or may not help you make the decision. The pump is louder now after a few days. It's not bad but you can definitely notice it. It has a different, higher winding, pitch sound compared to the Vortech. Also, when the pump is on W1 mode (pulse mode), the propeller hesitates to start up sometimes and makes a clicking noise. After 2-3 attempts, it runs again. It's not bad and this whole incident is normally under 2 seconds but you can see the pump hesitate. Makes me really question the reliability and longetivity of this pump. Can it handle constant on and off in pulsate mode for 2-3 years? I don't know. I've brought up these issues in the equipment forum and people just seem to ignore the fact because they are all so fixated on this "new competitor" against Tunze and Vortech. They think I'm knocking this pump but really I'm not. These are just things that i've seen and notice that I want other users to know what they "may" get themselves into.

Power wise, this thing blows the vortech out the water, literally. lol.

For the price, it's the best bang for the buck. If the W1 mode problem that I stated above is going to be a problem forever, I can live with it because it really doesn't effect the pump's purpose, which is to push water. It still makes waves perfectly fine. If you use the other modes, then you wont notice the issue at all. I'm still partial to Vortechs in my display because I hate wires in the tank but wouldn't hesitate to put this in a frag tank or if I had a really deep tank where I can hide this pump in the top right corner somewhere.. This thing is pretty big. So far, it exceeded my expectations and performs just as well as the Vortechs (maybe even better)."

I've been using the pump for about 12 days now.

I've never owned a Tunze (which I think would be a better comparison to the Jebao instead of the Vortech). I have only seen them in action at local fish stores. From all the great reviews, I'm assuming the Tunze is SUPER SILENT. This Jebao isn't silent. It's noticeably more quiet than the Vortech but the vibrations are still apparent at full power. Now maybe it's because I'm very anal when it comes to noise in my tank. I've set everything up to be as quiet as possible. The three loudest things on my tank are the Vortech, then Jebao, then ATI Powermodule fans. If I turn these three things off, my tank is near silent.

I think all three of these pumps are great options and the buyer needs to choose one most fit for their application.

If you're looking for a pump that takes up minimal space inside the display tank, broader flow, less heat transfer, and don't mind a huge magnet on the side of your tank, go with the Vortechs.

If you're looking for a pump with a more directional flow, quietness (I'm only assuming), proven reliability, and don't mind wires in the tank, then go with the Tunzes.

If you're on a budget, want to have similar wave making features like Tunze and vortech, directional flow, don't mind wires in the tank, can tolerate some slight noise, don't want to spend $400+ on a pump, but willing to purchase a product with questionable reliability and service, then go for the Jebao.

well if it is louder than a Vortech they'd definitely be louder than a Tunze (found vortechs noticeably louder than my dead silent tunzes). Cost could be an issue but I'll wait to hear what you guys think a few months or years down the road :) (if they need anything replaced, etc.). Speaking of which, how available are replacement parts and impellers for these things?

When I had 2xmp40 rocking on my tank in my living room they about drove me nuts! People would say... What is that moaning whining sound... I would just point at the tank!

Your bearings needed replacement that's why. Btw, I switched to mp 60s. Still using the same wet side almost 3 years ago.
