Well. I've been looking at the new version of the Jebo 520 and it looks like it could kick some serious butt.

The new unit is an out-of-the-box rig that has the same 6-inch reaction chamber as the old model and comes with an (alleged) 840 GPH pump and all the required fittings to make it run.

Granted, it's not a needle-wheel design, but, with a pump that strong, I'd bet you could pull some nice gunk.

And the best part is, you could buy a brand new unit for $90 shipped.

I wonder if any of the skimmer gurus on this board (that's right Luke33, I mean you) have seen this model and what their thoughts are.

My thoughts, its a skimmer for a 55g or less. 6" diameter, small neck, decent design. Its much more expensive now, 85bux + generally 30+ shipping. I'd get an octo first.

Don't blame it on me buddy! I ran a Frankenstein version of the 520 with killer air pump and limewood stones a few years back for fun. I don't have it in my shed anymore.

I already have the 520 skimmer body complete. Would it be worth the money for a pump (I can always use the pump on another project later) and some plumbing to use this jebo?

I think it would be great! I would skip the gate valve on the output and run a tube with a diagonal cut. I would go with the smaller Sedra or eheim needle wheel pump. If you have the room you could run this as a recirculating skimmer

I could do that and add the gate or the recirc at a later time. Its pulling well enough with the mag5 I have feeding it now through the stock venturi

The 3500 is fine, I would say the 5000 has to much flow and limits the time water stays in the skimmer.

The key to tuning in a skimmer is a constant level of water in the sump. You could use a simple tube outlet and get a auto top off system for your sump. After years of saltwater I think this is one of the biggest pains compared to freshwater setups. A simple outlet also is easy to maintain.

Whaledriver - I look at this skimmer, and I see possibilities.

Maybe its the DIY in me. What do you think would happen if I connected an OEM replacement pump for an Octo NW150 to this rig? Do you think I could get comparable performance to an Octo 150 out of it?

I have a similar pump on my jebo skimmer now. I think this pump is a copy of the one I am useing. Go for it. A skimmer is just a vessel to hold the foam til the scum can be removed. There is no reason to pay for somthing so simple. You can see that skimmers are so much cheapoer now than 5 years ago and they run better too.
