Jeremy's 250g build - Take II

Alright, things have been a little quiet, and I admit, I've been lazy.:bum: Oh, and I've had to work a lot with my schedule being pretty well screwed by my wifes new job.:(

I'm still waiting for my Velocity T4 to show up so I can swap it out with the Wahoo, and I can't put any corals in until my reflectors show up anyhow. I have also been trying to find the sweet spot on the skimmer. It seems I'm either skimming to dry, causing the dry skimmate to bubble out the air holes, or the skimmer overflows. I adjusted the wedge valve last night, seemingly a tiny adjustment, only to wake up this morning to a puddle on the garage floor.:( I am glad it's out there and not in the house, or my cajones would've been in a ringer!:eek2: To top it off, while cleaning up the mess, I apparently scared the crap out of my Rhomboid and he shot up through the only potential opening in the cover and fell behind the frag tank. A very tense minute of me acting like a contortionist, climbing over the sump and reaching behind everything, I managed to get ahold of him, toss him back in the tank, only to have him get stuck up against the Vortech. I unplugged it, moved the wet end and freed his @$$.

Anyhow, enough drama for one morning. I got my shipment of snails, crabs, and grunge from GARF and added those to the tank. All tests are showing normal, and I've still got 9 of the 10 chromis that I put in. I knew the 10th wouldn't make it as he didn't look so hot when he went in.

I've also got the light mounted above the fuge, but want to do some final modifications to the setup before I'm done with it. It is lighting the fuge nicely, even with only 2 of the 4 bulbs running.

Let's see, what else? Oh, I'm designing a bubble trap box for the fuge return. I tried a simple 5g tank in the sump for that line to drain into, but only minimal success in getting rid of the microbubbles. Here's the current plan:

Both the fuge return and skimmer return will flow into this box on the right. The water will be forced over the baffle and exit the 3 slots cut out near the bottom. Then I'll have a lid that covers the box, with the exception of where the pipes enter. This should get rid of any microbubbles, salt spray, and noise coming from the return drains.

I also plan on having a pair of acrylic covers made to fit over the top of the fuge to keep the insects out of that tank. Yes, it's a minor irritation at the moment.

Sorry about your Troubles. At least you saved the Rhomboid.

What is grunge from GARF ?

Just live sand and all the micro fauna that comes with it. I got a nice scoop from Mark's tank, but somehow had some planaria get into the new system, even though nothing from the frag/holding setup has come near the new tank. They must have come in on the new rock that I got. I didn't kill the rock before cooking it, so I knew that there was a chance of something coming in, but since it had been in it's own container, with nothing else for 6-8 weeks, I figured it would be rid of most of the pests that we are worried about. Apparently not. So, I did a tank wide levamisole treatment, which may have also wiped out most of my pod population. The grunge would help re-seed it.

Oh, I also decided to pull the large flat rock on the right hand side and let it cook in the sun for a few days, then I'll get it re-seeded and deal with the die off in another tank for awhile before putting it back in the main tank. It had a large number of hydroids on it, as well as a number of aiptasia, and I just decided to nip this one in the bud before it became a problem.

I have had the same live rock since i got in the hobby little over 2 yrs ago and just recently i have had 3 things of Aiptasia pop up. The stuff is so annoying

Yeah, the aiptasia don't really bother me, as I can take care of them well enough. It's the number of hydroids on the rock that bothered me. I could deal with a couple, but not when most of the top side of the rock was covered in them. I'll likely have to deal with a few stragglers that may have managed to jump ship before I pulled the rock.

New shipment came in:

Since you may not be able to tell, the fish are:
Spotted Unicorn
Blue Eye Tang
Juvi Orange Shoulder

I like that OST :)

Been wanting one for a while. Decided to hold off until the ich problem is under control though :(

When are you reflectors coming in?

Very nice Jeremy. Are they going straight into the display?

Yep. Display seems ready, so in they go.

Yeah, I wanted to make sure I had the tangs I really wanted right away so they could all go in about the same time. I'll let these guys relax for awhile, and start adding the other fish next week.
I haven't heard on the reflectors yet, so I'm hoping they ship soon.

How are the new additions doing?

The Orange Shoulder, while thin, is doing the best so far. He is out more than the others. The Unicorn is nice and fat, and is swimming along the back wall being shy. The Blue Eye, while out front with good overall coloration, has got a bit of mouth damage from shipping, which is common from what I hear. We'll see how things progress over the weekend and then I'll consider adding the others. Just want to keep the stress to a minimum until these guys have had a chance to settle in. Plus, the other tangs all tend to be a bit aggressive, so I want these 3 to get a foothold before dealing with that.

I hope your blue eye pulls through for you this time :)

Me too. He's such a cool little fish. And by little, I mean 2"!!!:)

Very nice Jeremy. You might want to double up your netting. The females can slip right through :(
