Jerry's 300 Gallon Deep DimensionS RR Tank Build.

Quite a few updates:

I built about a 7ft x 5ft base/ platform to raise the tank up 12 inches which I feel was a great idea. The tank is in perfect view, no need to squat down to see everything.
The platform is built out of Qty. (2) 2x10's sandwiched, glued and screwed in together. 3/4 plywood on the bottom and on the top. Spaced and secured 16 inches apart. This helped with not only providing a better view of the tank but also helped spread out the weight of roughly 3,850 lbs. across the floor.

I prepped and sprayed the stand and base with 2 layers of Flex Seal, black for the stand and white for the canopy to help with light deflection. I also did this to help with salt residue and moisture.

Installed my 75 gallon DIY sump, I had a Regal 250sss skimmer, but had to return it and go with a Skimz Monzter 253DC skimmer due to clearance. I am very pleased with the new skimmer, after 72hrs its preforming very well.

Lighting has been set up and configured, the 5x Radion G3 lights have been mounted inside of the canopy along with the 8x T5 lights. 4x ATI 39w coral plus, 4x ATI 39W Blue Plus. Lighting is now plugged into and controlled by my Apex Neptune system. I love the Apex system.

Pulled out all of the 5 year old live rock and sand out of my 100 Gallon and put it in the new tank. Plumbed the tank, started it up and 3 weeks later all is well.

Next Steps, at least the ones I can remember.
• Install and set up a new breaker box 2x 20 amps.
• Order the new Red Dragon 230W pump as soon as it is available, hopefully soon.
• Make another DIY sump, one made out of Acrylic and one that will give me more clearance and a bit more volume
• Wire maintenance, wire maintenance, and more wire maintenance.
• Build and install a box for all of the Apex components.
• Completely re plumb the sump tank, now that it’s up and running and have a clearer understanding of what I want and what works best for the tank, I will take the time and properly plumb the new sump and I believe I have a few slick ideas.
• Install and plumb the emperor Aquatics UV 80watt sterilizer. Have a few slick ideas for this as well.
• Make a special DIY filter for any media, it will be a quick disconnect type and will probably make it out of an empty 10gallon salt bucket,
• Add 2x 10 Gallon DSB buckets with quick disconnects as well, they will be plumbed off to the side of the tank
• Design and install a R/O salt mix station… A summer project.

Lastly tank is up and running, everything looks good, all fish are healthy and doing well. Need to read up this weekend on Anemones and a few soft corals that I have, they are doing ok, but not looking great where as others are and thriving????

Nevermind. I didn't read far enough... have you tried to get the skimmer cup in and out? Or the whole skimmer? That was my biggest problem with my 250DD.

Yes so the skimmer does not come out unless I pull the sump. I can get the lid off, pull the cup off, but not get the cup out of the sump. So for now I hook up a 3/4 ID hose to my shop vac and suck it out and man does that smell lovely. I am going to build a DIY Acrylic sump to fix the problem. If only Marineland went another 6 inches in height on the stand.

Skimz Monzter SM253

Skimz Monzter SM253

Let me know how you like the Skimz. Their line looks pretty nice.

I don't have anything to compare to as this is my first professional Skimmer. However I can say this, it runs great, easy to tune, quiet, and produces very, very well. I have 30 fish in the tank, feed twice a day and all levels are remaining stable. I also like the fact that it is controllable, only minor complaint.... The directions are less then helpful.

Man that seems like overkill on the lighting imo. No one else has said a word about it so maybe I'm in the minority....

I have a 210gal which is similar to your 300 except yours is deeper at 3ft. I only have two reef breeders photon 32's leds and I tossed on a couple 4ft T5's to supplement....

I don't know, I am doing a 300g DD build as well. We looked at the Radions, but were thinking 9 of them, which would cost a FORTUNE. We ended up going with 18 pucks similar to the Radion pucks. Our concern was not with the amount of light that they output as much as getting full coverage without spotlighting. We can always dim them if the light is too intense, but I know I won't have any spotlighting with 18 pucks.

I think 5 Radions with the T5's will do a great job.

The T5's are a great addition and remove any shadowing concerns. Being that the Radions are controlled and run on a program, I don't feel its too much. They never run at more than 65%. Everything is controlled by the APEX, if I feel its to much or perhaps just added some new live stock or Corals, I just turn them down a bit or just run the T5's blues with 3 Radions. I also like the cloud feature just for this reason. And Its not like an on/off switch, with the APEX you control the light intensity. A perfect configuration IMO.

I am very pleased with the T5/LED combo, my AM program starts of with T5 blues, roughly 45 min later the whites, then an Hr. later the Radions and they ramp up in intensity till about 4pm then begin to ramp down. The tank is about a month old, so far so good.

Fish going great, Zoas not so much.

Fish going great, Zoas not so much.

I went to the Reefapalozza show in NY at the Meadowlands, bought some nice frags and learned that one of the growth issues that I am having with my tank was that my water was too clean. I disconnected an external filter that I was using on top of my skimmer, fed the fish a bit more, target feeding reefroids twice a week and the tank is doing much better. Water parameter levels are fine and have been stable for some time. Really no issues there.

Where I am not having much success is with my Zoas & mushrooms. They are just barely existing and have been for about 4 months now. Same with the ones I just purchased from the show.

Based on some research I added some Magnesium this past Friday and actually noticed a small positive change with the Zoas and Mushrooms, noticed it today so it took a few days to kick in.

Not sure what my Magnesium levels are (just ordered a test kit today)

Are there any other supplements that I should look into such as Amino Acids to Zoas and mushrooms?

Any additional input welcomed.
