Join me for a strange one...

'bout time you got off yer lazy... I mean, glad to see it coming along. Looks awesome. Downhill from here.

.... I am at a loss for words. Your DIY skills make me feel completely inadequate both as an aquarist and as a man in general.

Thanks people and noahm for the kudos!

As you know I needed other (smaller) people to help which required the alignment of worlds to make happen. When They could assist I couldn't spare the time and verse-a-vice. Hopefully with that logistical requirement gone I can move faster.

srusso; Thanks for the Lockline tip.

srusso; Hard to tell. I need to:

1) Make the outlet standpipe
2) and the inlet standpipe.
3) Cut off all the down pipes underneath so they end before hitting the floor.
4) Come up with a sump.

Once this short list is done I'll fill it with hose-water and run everything for a week straight. I don't want to fill it with $100 of saltwater only to discover it has another leak.

Also, I seem to recall reading something about you owning a MakerBot, or at least making a gear on it. I am about an inch away from purchasing one and have been for a year. Is it worth it? Is the quality of the prints resilient and accurate enough to really use, or is it more for prototyping? Am I even recalling this correctly?

Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by and comment!

I'm working on 2) above and it will be done tonight.
Stay tuned there will be a quiz with it!

RandyFolds; You have me confused with two other folks on RC. I have a CNC router. I don't have a 3D printer.
I suggest you use RCs outstanding search engine to hunt them down.

CNC router is just as awesome in my book. Some day...

Off to the search function.

Well something had to be said to the "Man" that makes his own rules... Truly outside the box thinking on some of the things you did here. :)

RandyFolds; If you can't find it let me know maybe I can help find it.

SoLiD; Wait'll I get to the lighting. Mwhahahaahaha.

Here's the suction stand-pipe.

I routed it using my CNC router. First I designed those wood clamps and routed them out of 1" plywood, Then I chucked my stand-pipe in them and screwed them to the table. I then ran a double line hole-pass down the tube, manually rotating the tube a few degrees before each pass. This is what that looked like.

Here's a close up of the holes. Lots of holes. 2 and a half hours of holes.

Here's my tube lit with one XML LED pointing up from the bottom. Notice the holes.. Lots, and lots, and lots, of them.

I mentioned a quiz..
Here's it is:

How many holes did I drill in this pipe. The holes are 1/8" diameter and the drilled length of pipe is 18-1/4" long. (That's a jellyfish on my 21" CRT.)

I was trying to figure out how to hold that round thing for drilling. I was coming up with all sorts of kludges. Then a buddy, who also has a router, said, 'route something". DOH!
