Jumping O. scyllarus

I'm currently in the planning stages of building a custom acrylic tank for an O.s. I'm trying to decide id i should incorporate some sort of cover, i'd really like to keep the open top rimless look, but am unsure if these mantis are prone to jumping, i've had some smaller species that would launch on occasion if spooked.

mine scoots/swims/scuttles/whatever you call it... up to the top of my tank very quick during feeding time, Im sure on a rimless tank if he was trying to catch a fish or something he could ACCIDENTALLY kinda slide over the edge.

I dont see any reason he would purposely jump out. but thats just in my experience

Good Luck

O scyllarus have been seen clearing six inches. By no means is it common, but it isn't something i would gamble with.

So the question is.... how do you *handle* a mantis if it jumps out of a tank? Hope you have a bucket near by or a towel?

Smaller O. s can actually jump higher than large ones. Jumping is not something that happens all the time, but every now and then they can spook and launch themselves. I always keep at least a 2 inch rim above the water line and with small Odontodactylus some sort of cover.

I've lost several animals that jumped and fell 4 or 5 feet to the floor. This is particularly hard on large O.s.
