Jumpping on people

I'm pretty new to this and I've seen some heated discussions, but from what I've seen its more about trying to get people to be responsible reef keepers. Before I got started, I did about three months of reading and talking with other reef keepers, mainly because I really wanted to know what I was getting myself into.
There's a huge difference between making newbie mistakes and ignorance.
People do get carried away sometimes, but I've seen it on both sides.

Often I see posts for someone asking a question and everyone has to jump down there throat about there fish choice or that they have to many fish . IMO that is a sad thing and more than likely causes people to have a bad opinion of RC. Cant we all just get along . If anyone else feels this way please post a reply. And truth being known humanly we should not keep any of the fish in such small tanks even 1000gal tank is nothing compared to the ocean.
SHUT UP

besides RC has a fine rep and if you are going to do stupid things, expect to get clobbered, is half the fun of this place anyway

another soccer mom post.... :strooper:

I've been reading here for well over a year but just decided to register to say I agree and am tired of seeing the people who dont have a clue jump down throats with wrong advice to raise their post count. Another thing that we should also remember that 90% of our pets were plucked from the ocean so if you think about it you took that fish from millions of gallons for your own pleasure.

Very true.

That is what Im talking about. But i forgive you (Randall_James) IMO there is no need for stuf like that.

Is funnt how you are one of the first persons that kick newbie ***

well i would think posting on NEW TO THE HOBBY would mean your new and your looking for advice from someone who's been in your shoes & could put you on the right track, now sometimes before i ask a ?? i will go down the list of threads & most of the time someone has already ask & i get my answer, i know the more experienced people hate to see the same ?? ask on the same list of threads, so i try to find it up there first,

Well, that's actually a good idea---for newbies to come into the lounge and get to know us in our other life when we kick back and joke. The Lounge is kind of rough and tumble, often adult-ish, sometimes childish---sometimes way serious and sometimes just off the wall nuts; but it's not an experts-only club; just lurk in there til you get an idea if it's for you or not, and then dive in. We pretend to abuse each other, but we do care if somebody needs help. You're perfectly welcome there, and here: don't be shy. We were all beginners when we got into this; and if you think an old pro can't make a mistake, you should have seen the mess when my kalk reactor exploded.

and then theres those of us that would like to post more... but due to the fear of being jumped for sounding stupid... we dont...
:)

This is one of the biggest problems I see...or don't see for that matter :D. Don't ever worry about posting a question or even your own thoughts on any particular subject. That is what RC is hear for after all. People bashing on you or trying to make you feel stupid can easily be ignored...their only words and keep in mind that everyone started out as a newbie at some point...if I went into details on all the newbie mistakes I made, I'd be here all day posting stupid stuff. Just ask any one with any experience in the hobby what their dumbest newbie mistake was and I'm suer they'll all have a good answer to that one.

i think i seen a whole thread on that, maybe there would be the best place to look for the dos & donts, coming from the people who already did & would never do again,

Oh, you can learn a bundle from the things us folk have already done wrong. That's why we tend to run down the street with our hair on fire screaming DON"T DO THAT. Sometimes we just fail to express it calmly.

Yep ... if someone gets out of line just notify a moderator - no need to start a yap thread.

Shush you! If people from here got to know me in the lounge, they might not trust me any more. . . :D

Uh--huh, Teena. If this hobby were a cinch, we wouldn't have this forum. We'd just all post photos of how beautiful and algae free our tanks are and have a gallery.

Unfortunately, there are a thousand ways to do things...some of which work better than others. Minor, minor example: I was telling somebody put a saucer down on their dry sand when adding water to a tank for the first time, and somebody else chimed in with, spread out a garbage bag, and it was beautiful: no fuss, no cloudy tank, just a perfect watering with no kickup of sand, the bag floating on the surface as the water got deeper. Brilliant! say I. I'm going to do that next time. I've been at this for 40 and more years, and I learned something. Not a silly little thing if you've been up to your elbows with a turkey baster trying to get dust off your live rock.

So, yep! we all learn, all the time, and good ideas meet better ones.

And if you're really in dire trouble and nervous about the public forum, just PM somebody who's got a bit more experience. I LIKE to answer in public forum, because that way everybody [including the shy folk] gets the benefit of the answers, but at least you'll get an answer before your tank goes crash! Just don't expect too involved an answer except in the public forums, just for the reason I gave above. But if you want a quick check on a fact or practice, PM.

["you! If people from here got to know me in the lounge, they might not trust me any more. . . "

LOL, Will, none of are sane in the Lounge. We don't have to be. But we don't talk [gasp!] fish there either, so be warned! Fish is the forbidden topic, and you will have trout and smelt hurled at you if you try. ;)

I dropped my camera and the lens cap shattered and stuck on my lens. I've got to get it fixed, but what with the move and all, I've procrastinated.

This small aside brought to you by....oops.

Now, back to our thread.

Everybody be nice to each other. Remember when you were starting. Remember too, us old-timers get terser the more often we type the same info, not because we're short tempered, but because we just get hurrieder and hurrieder. I offended somebody deeply once because I shot off a post that I meant to be informational, and I was late, and had to hurry, and his tank was at risk---but he thought I was being curt with him and got way hurt. So EVERYBODY go easy and give each other some slack. You have to know a person to know how to read them, and even so, slack never hurts.

Now I have to go, and dash across the construction zone outside my house...hope the ramp to my drive is still there.
