Jumpping on people

And if you're really in dire trouble and nervous about the public forum, just PM somebody who's got a bit more experience.

Very good reccomendation, I get PM's every single day from people I don't know and I answer each one to the best of my abilities. And if for some reason I don't know the answer, I forward onto one of my more knowledable reefy friends.

Which brings up another issue, I think some do that sort of thing (as well as asking questions about it) just to get a reaction from the board.

im a newbie and my tank is in its 4th week of its cycle and ive learned SOOOOOOOOOOOO much just from this website that its not even funny! i purchased all my equipment from asking so many questions on this forum. the only thing i had was the tank and stand. someone recommended me to goto Manhattanreefs.com cus i live in NY and i can talk to people who live close to me and get them to help me and yadda yadda yadda but i think RC is much better and resourceful IMO. I have to thank a bunch of people but i cant remember them all. id rather much be on this forum then anything else. like i said there were 2 things that i first learned 1)seaclones stink  2)and NEVER EVER buy a tang if u have a tank under 75 gallons or you will get bashed unmercifully! thanks everyone for all the help without you i dont think i couldve done it!

rbtwo, I'd still reccomend hanging out on that manhattan site even if you like RC better right now. Once you get a little more in to things, you'll start to realize that there's absolutely nothing like having experienced reef keepers close by. For one thing, it can be extremely hard to diagnose more advanced problems over the internet - and for another thing, local reefers are a great source of frags!

Or a source of babysitters when something goes horribly wrong and your tank starts to crash. I've coral-sat before to help out fellow reefers here. Imagine nobody able to help and you loose all your SPS frags within a day...:(

and that would be where the local source of frags comes in :D

Hey DaltonJames, don't even worry bout stuff like that. I've had a regal tang in my 55g for awhile now, with plans to stick him in my 220g once he was larger.....I havn't gotten the tank up yet so I did the responsible thing and found a new bigger home for him before he got too big. As long as you know you're going to upgrade, it don't matter who will bash you for it.

see?????????? this is why i LOVE you guys!!!!! yeah ive been on and off the site but more on this one cus i learn from other peoples mistakes and try not to make the same ones.

I agree, although I use RC I use my local club as well. We're having a fragging demo tomorrow. Although you can read descriptions and see onlime demos a live demo is tons better. Plus discounts and local frags.

awesome i read somewhere on a thread that there was a fragging convention sponsored or run by RC does anyone know where and when? have u guys been to any?

I totally agree. I have been poking around here since August of '06 (under a different name 'cause I forgot my stupid password!) and quite honestly have felt quite intimidated at times.

I would rather try to find an answer before starting a new thread just because I'm kinda shy in nature. Sometimes, though, you can't find exactly what you want to know. After reading thread after thread on here literally every day, sometimes I just plain don't ask some questions for fear of being treated like this. Unless it is an emergency or I take a LOT of time formulating my question so I'm sure I won't get bashed for asking.

I think the biggest problem I've seen is people replying to bash something about the way the querent's tank is set up and never even come close to answering the question the person asked in the first place. To all those guilty of doing this... here's a a big ol' thanks for nothing. Please, answer question first, criticize second. Otherwise all RC is doing is scaring people away to just learn from their mistakes instead of finding someone to help.

<gets down off of soap box now> :D

Unfortunately, it often seems like the people doing said bashing are just repeating bashes they've seen elsewhere on this site, and they probably don't even understand the logic behind the problem in the first place.

Yet another reason to just move on if you're not providing constructive comments. (note that criticism can certainly be constructive if it is worded correctly!) ;)

It still is just another forum fellas, don't get too sentimental.

Couldn't have said it any better! :D

i read this forum everyday i have learned alot.
one thing i have learned is that theres more then one way to do things .
Sk8r post some of the best advice of anyone here i read and see his post everywhere he never pushes things on people .
what i mean about pushes is that when someone new comes on here and ask about lights or skimmers . there are too many people who say you cant do that you have to have this. or that will not work at all .
it seems people try and get new reefers to buy the most exspencive skimmer or lighting out there saying the other stuff will not work . alot of new reefers have to plan carefully on what tehy can get and be able to afford. lighting gets me the most most of the people that post about it if someone ask if they can grow sps under t-5 lights say no you can grow softies and stuff like that but have to have Mh to grow them. this is not true i have a friend that grows great sps coral under t-5 lights and he has a single reflector also. i have another that grows them under vho lights four bulbs over a 75 gal
he uses a mirror as a reflector. someone has asked that before also and was told it wouldnt work they had to have Mh .
i just wish some of these people would really look into things before saying such things to new reefers.

Not sentimental .. just suspect this post will go for yrs at the lounge and may have more substance than most at that forum.

THere are numerous reefing conventions/meets, and one of them is this weekend in the Tricities area of WA, I think; I'd be there, but I'm going to the Walking With Dinos arena show tomorrow---sounds like the lounge in here: here we are discussing our social schedules, LOL!

I think that goes "Just because I am paranoid, does not mean they are not out to get me" :)
