Just another 120 tech build

There are many ways to find mods for skimmers. I had an Octopus 300 but it wasn't the extreme so I am not familiar, I do know the extreme has a sicce pump which is supposed to work well.

As far as finding mods look on equipment discussion forum for MSX skimmer threads or Octopus skimmer threads. There is alot of feedback on those skimmers, you could also google Octopus extreme 250 mods and find stuff. I had looked into buying a 160 extreme at one point. How deep in the water do you have the skimmer?

My octo was hard to get adjusted at first also. I wish they had a little finer adjustment to them, but once they find there sweet spot they are awesome.

here you go lots of foam it started to foam out the holes on top

IM000730.jpg i have mesh mods on bolth octo 3000 pumps:beer:

Skimmer is running 7 and 7/8" in the water. Thanks for the pics. I think I got a mesh mod with it when I bought it, but I'd have to buy a 2nd one to mod both. I'll have to research how to mod it as well. :-)

octopus extreme has ATB purple pinwheel mod and warner marine red pinwheel older octopus skimmers with otp pumps has new octopus pinwheel upgrade instead of needlewheel they come with.

I can get it to 9" deep. I'll make that change tomorrow and see if things improve. I'll also look into mods.

chadfarmer, you're talking about the return from skimmer? If so, yes the skimmer output is under water.

The drain line from the tank also exits slightly under water to reduce noise in case that's what you meant.

I removed the skimmer output extension and so now it outputs just above the water. That means I can't get the skimmer any deeper though. I'll hopefully see some improved performance when I get home. I definitely noticed I didn't need to close it as much to get the water to the same level. That's dumb that they even give that extension if it's not supposed to be used.

Thanks for the help everyone!

only problem with wedge pipe outputs is air doesnt escape well so it creates back pressure which effects performance of skimmer some people just drill hole at top of elbow so air escapes.

Does the output extension come off? If so you could replace with a piece of pvc of your choice. My Octo that I had had a completly different output tube made of pvc.

I made two ATB purple mods to my Octo Extreme 250 last night. No big changes in skimmate from what I can tell, but I'm also over skimming so I'm wondering if I will. It did make the skimmer pumps quieter though, so I'm extremely happy about that.

What are some signs that I'm over skimming? I don't have many corals, but I'm assuming they'd be what is affected the most.

Also, I have some detrius on my sand in the lower flow areas, how does everyone battle that and keep their sand clean. I have 20 nassarius snails, but I'm thinking I might need some more. Any other recommended creatures for this duty?

Lastly I have some black flexible hose and some new bulkheads, loc-line, etc. to re-do my return plumbing. I'm trying to accomplish a few goals with this new equipment. I first want to reduce the humm of the return plumbing and move my pump further away from the micro bubbles. I'm also splitting the loc-line on each side and adding the flow modifiers so that I can create more broad flow and help the detrius issue I mentioned above. Might sound like a confusing plan, but I'd like to think I know what I'm doing.

New pics next week as I'm hoping to get a RBTA this weekend and maybe a new frag or two.
