yes - i've always dripped kalk - it works out well in my system in that i get about 2.5 gal of evap a day so it accounts for all my top off water. imo a kalk dripper is the safest way to deal with kalkwasser and top off - automation is cool but nothing ever goes bad with a dripper. i just fill the jug at night and drip all night long

other then that a 1/2 cup each of 2 part and my levels seem to be pretty stable so far

1 cc of vodka, a couple drops of bacteria, and iodine 3x per week is all i add to the tank. and then feed feed feed and do water changes of course

plancton sorry but i'm not the one to ask about vortecs - i'm a tunze kinda guy
but if it were me building a system like you are describing - i would do a closed loop. with acrylic it is easy to put holes right where you want them and have no powerheads - right???
you could set up a nice gyre if planned right just a thought

well i'm not ready for a full scale update yet but i bought a new coral and thought i would show it off. the tank is doing fine overall and just starting to fill in. as with most new set-ups the corals are taking their sweet time growing but i expected that till the system ages a bit.
i am still working on my sump in the basement - one more tank to drill and plumb in and then i will update that. so far the lit fuge/frag tank (a 125g) is up and doing well and the cryptic fuge (a 90g 2/3 full) is added as well. the last tank will be a dedicated skimmer tank (a 40long) which will be added at the front end so the water is skimmed before entering either of the fuge tanks. when complete the total sump volume will be about twice the display.

thanks everyone - but it is definitly a work in progress

ply and ic thanks - the square shape is a real improvment over standard rectangles in so many ways. lighting, flow, coral placement and aquascaping were so much easier to accomplish with this tank

burt - no i didn't widen the teeth. i considered opening them up some at first but my current flow through rate gives me about an inch from the water surface to top of glass which although a bit tight is acceptable. i'm running a mag 18 up from the basement so i'm maybe getting 500gph at most

broke - i ran a dsb for over 15 years i like the look of sand too but one of the biggest things i wanted to accomplish with the rebuild was improved water flow. not the type of flow where you aim a ph at your corals - that can be done with sand - i wanted to move the entire water volume in a gyre like motion. going bb and placing the ph's in the back bottom not only hides them, but keeps the bottom and rock clean and creates very dynamic water movment. currently i have 3 tunze and 2 maximods blowing under the rock and across the bottom. with all that flow detritus doesn't stand a chance and hey - no sand to vacuum
oh and btw the bottom is covered with 12x12 black granite floor tiles - gives it a more natural look then standard starboard i think

Wow love those zoas but well i have one of those goucher or whatever they called but interesting urs look neon orange with beish/light pink skirt nice morph i guess... but the ones that i got from you look more like AOG.. cause mine same skirt but center neonpink.. but still love them ...

by the way... where is edgray rock??? dont see a pic of them remember them???

i forgot i even had this thread in here - i kinda quit updating it because it is not all sps and really didn't belong in this forum
thats funny - i still have that rock! it is burried in the zoa peninsula and you can barely make it out any more. over time some of the zoas were over run by others but i still have many of those originals i got from you - thats it in that pic directly behind the goochters. my goochter colony now is the size of a dinner plate - i really like them
yeah i love the rimless cube look and now with the led's the tank looks nice. you will be very happy when you get yours
