Just ordered my second Latz!!!

I was surfing a few sites, not necissarily to buy anything, but because I love to look at all the cool stuff. I happened onto www.reefermadness.us and lo and behold, they had a latz posted!! Well, I got excited, but it was Labor day and I always like to ask about a fish before I buy it.

So, I wait until today as patiently as possible, call them up 3 minutes after they open, and was told that it was sold. Then they got the GM on the phone who said it was still available. It has been there for over two weeks and in good health in their coral tanks. Eating perfectly and doing well. I couldn't pass it up. $235 later, I have what will hopefully be the female of my pair. If the one I have is already female, then I will have two females I need to get males for. Either way, I want two pairs(one for display, one for breeding), so it doesn't matter as much.

I'll let you all know how it does. With a 10 day guarantee, at least I have some safety with this sometimes finicky fish.

Did I say that I am extremely excited? I'm going to be up by 8am waiting for my package to arrive. If anyone wanted something from there, I have already exceded the $200 free shipping, so you would only need to help with the $15 box charge. It's leaving today, though, so please don't delay. You can call me at 4078082212 and I will talk to them to see if it is possible to add it to the order. Trust me, $7.00 on the box charge is not why I'm offering to add stuff to the order. I am merely trying to help people out if they want something from them. I would gladly pay the extra $7 not to deal with the hassles that sometimes arise with group purchasing:).

Ok, what is a latz?

Ridiculously expensive clownfish that I can't figure out the hype about

If you'd met one in person and got to know him or her you'd understand.

Very VERY cool congrats Craig :)

I think in the future when I can afford to setup my 125g I am tempted to do LED lights and probably build the tank around a pair of latz

I can't imagine the type and amount of drugs it would take to make me pay $235 for a single clown fish, or a pair even. Must be one special fish. Does he poop gold nuggets or at least talk?

Yeah I think it should do my laundry and other household chores for that much :D

Not to mention, don't they have a marginal long-term survival rate in aquariums? Couldn't imagine spending that much on a fish that isn't hardy.

If it is in good health and pairs with the other that I have and at some point starts breeding, I'll pay a maid to do my laundry. I look at clownfish as a long-term investment, which makes me love them even more. They really are my reason to come home at all.

The myth about latz having marginal survival rates in aquariums is just that...a myth!! They are extremely hardy given adequate conditions. This myth came to fact because everyone was afraid to treat these clownfishes for disease and the fact that they need to be shipped properly with plenty of water and care. Once in an aquarium, they are as hardy as a clarkii.

The latz that have been coming to USA lately have been very healthy, most shipped directly from AU. This one has been in their coral tank for over two weeks and they say is as healthy as can be. The one I have is still juvi(hopefully), or at least hasn't grown adult colors yet, so I'm hoping there is a chance they'll mate at some point. If they do not take to each other, I'll just get each of them a partner to pair up with. I really want to get into breeding, so why not start with something that many will desire?

Almost forgot, it is true that for a few years, most latz coming to America came in with brooklynella, which also contributed to the idea that they are not hardy.

FAIOS had gotten some of these in too. They seem to be coming in more readily now. They are notoriously poor shippers though. Good luck they really look like a "clown" when they get older with those funky lips. If you can successfully pair them up, get them to spawn, and raise the fry you will be RICH!

Hey didnt you buy the big one at SITC? I heard you did but I could be wrong.

Before my tank was ready to come home she got too stressed out being too big for even the larger display tanks that are there and she didn't make it :(

When it comes to a prized fish like this I actually have to agree with Craig - at SITC we didn't treat with copper... for most fish there is some evidence that a "harsh" treatment like that damages their lifespan, organs, and other things and the treatments we did give her didn't work. The stress of moving to my tank at home didn't fare well on her at all. She looked too cooped up at the store but giving her a bigger space to chill in I think was something we did too late.

For a fish like this they are relatively healthier as juvi for unexplained reasons but when treated properly in QT with formalin\copper everyone I've read about has had wonderful results.

Marcye knows I'm looking for another should the possibility arise but when that will be, who knows.

I really feel so sad about this too I was around that fish for nearly a month and come to really love her and it tore me up so bad I cried all week after she passed :( People dont' realize what a big commitment fish are until you really find that perfect one you loved.

If you've been to SITC and met Cyndi the tang and have seen her personality and how she recognizes people- the Latz was like that. She'd nibble my hand with little kisses when I'd clean out her tank and would follow me and ask for food - she seemed a lot more alert and aware than the other fish- the customers she didn't recognize would make her go and hide.

on all accounts I expect most people to think of them as the ugliest clownfish ever but to me its like a Pug dog- so ugly its cute adorable and wonderful :)

Thanks PR, that's the one...I hope she looks as good in person as she does in the pic. The package weighed 16lbs, so I'm hoping a lot of that is water weight.

Shes's going into a 55G with only sand, a little rock for her comfort, some chaeto, a coral banded shrimp, and a pistol shrimp(who since I have put in the tank have seen no more than his face and claws a couple of times...he's always underground, which is to be expected). I just made a makeshift frag-rack top for it, just in case she's a jumper.

If I see any signs of disease, it'll be easy to take her out and QT.

Craig you got a good deal on that clown. I think someone said they originally were selling it for $399, then for $309. Where did they have the clown posted on their site?

It was in their hand-picked area...I guess for almost two weeks on the site. I couldn't believe it stayed on the site...if what you say about the price is true, then I really just lucked out finding it when I did.

You see my last post time and now check out this post time. Yes, I'm up at 8:00am and already on the phone with FEDEX to make sure everything is still on track. I'd rather be up 2 1/2 hrs early than a minute late:). I'm like a kid on Christmas!!!

I hope to see pics when she settles in Craig :)

Also if she is a bit excited from the trip might want to put a weight on top of the egg crate material to keep it on in case she jumps. I find this to be helpful when you have a fish with a lot of power (say, latz versus a firefish hehe)

Let us know how acclimation goes :)

So, I was up at 8am and the package arrive at 9:45. I pulled out the huge bag and floated it. I thought, hey, let's look for an invoice or something in the box. I start making my way through the peanuts and come out with another bag. I thought, okay, this must be the previous ice bag, but it didn't feel cold. I look a little closer and lo and behold(yes, I like this saying), I find an absolutely gorgeous pipefish!! I don't know if this was just a mispackaging or if they hooked me up with this fish, but it is being acclimated right now also(in a different tank).

Oh, by the way, I almost forgot(but not really), the latz is beautiful and huge!!! I really hope she gets along with the other latz. I'm putting her in her own 55G, but hope to move the juvi over in a couple weeks. Man, is she ever gorgeous. I really hope she does well through acclimation(2-3 hours, I'm taking no chances).

The real test is the first few days...I'll let you guys know as I go along. I'll take pictures once I'm sure she's calmed down from the shipping.

So far, I have nothing but absolute positive to say about reefermadness and their quality and selection. Hopefully I will be saying the same thing a few days from now:).
