Just sharing... nothing important

very nice Kip, How comes I don't see you on the other site anymore?

thanks

other site... admin felt the need after years of participation and 13000 helpful posts to dismiss me. The moderators welcomed me back, but admin chose to dismiss me again. Any board who's sole purpose is to support their online store is gonna be pretty censored. So.... if saying marshall island rock is really good rock... and the board kicks me off because they only carry fiji... then I am better off... no more trying to help kids that just put 20 regal tangs in a 30g tank anymore. :) So I now spend a lot of time working with my local club and trying to gather good info about reefkeeping here at RC and amongst fellow hobbyists instead of policing bickering children on message boards. I dont get caught up in much of anything argumentative on message boards anymore because that just sucks the fun out of a hobby I love. I still feel the desire to share my good fortune in tank keeping, so thats why threads like this pop up from time to time. Good enough answer? :) Maybe this shoulda just been PM answer. :(

Anyhoo... thanks for visiting my thread.

this is an unknown acro... i call it a light purple table acro. frag to the left is about an inch... colony to the right is now around 8" wide. (wish it was as deep purple as the little frag, but it has been turning purpler lately)

last one for tonite.... good ol' acro yongei... everybody knows how fast these guys grow... 1.5" frag on the left and a foot tall, nearly food wide colony on the right... its even more amazing when i think of all of the frags taken along the way

Kip, how are you getting the top down shot's?

wide angle video lens screwed onto the camera.... wide angle barely submersed... camrea carefully removed lens down so that no moisture makes its way into the camera itself.

I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CAMERAS RUINED AFTER READING THIS POST! :)

I saw something really neat the other day for this purpose. It was an acrilic box about 6 inches X 6 inches by 4 inches tall. You float this on the surface of the water then take your pictures through it. It makes spectacular pictures, and less chance of destroying your camera.

Great pics,

yeah.. i have seen that "pickcha takin' box" too... but i am too lazy and too skill-less to make one

I saw a box like that, I think tld made, I'm surprised nobody has marketed an inexpensive viewing box like that

It took me a moment, but that is 64IVY's tank!, another great insporation, especially since I think it is 10 years old this year. I made that picture my desktop BTW, it is a great shot.

Kip, Im planning on going with 400W radiums, how often do you replace them?
I am asking because I have heard that they must be replaced every six months.
I plan on getting the same ballast you run, would you have gotten a different one?

Thank you.

only way i'd run radiums is on mag-hqi.. otherwise they are too blue/dim IMO

yeah.. i have heard the 6 month rule and soon enough i will be seeing how much truth there is to that. Gotta go back and do my homework, but I believe it is advised to change a bulb after it has had a 15% dropoff in PAR.

Thanks for the info,

I would like to run them for at least 10 months before I change them out.

I want something bluer than the current 10K XM 250W, the Radium 400W puts out the same PAR as my current bulb, just wanted something bluer.

i have heard of folks saying 8-9months on "overdriven" radiums... i just dont have any hard facts yet... next week i will be able to see how much my 5 month old radiums have dropped off.
