Justin's Cadlights 39g build thread

Thanks. I'm going to rebuild my canopy soon. I don't think I'm going to upgrade my lights but we'll see. Lots of people argue for the rule of thumb of 1 MH per 2 feet but I think 2 will be over kill on a 36" tank. The energy would be out of control as well, especially during the summer when the chiller has to be on.

But yes, dosing is awesome. I noticed a ton of more growth once I got mine stable. Hope your tank is well. I'm going to need new frags from you soon once my tank stabilizes :bounce3:

Why dont you supplement your halides with t5s or leds. That way you have complete coverage?

I've decided to go another way and am going with 2-250 watt radiums in lumenmax elites running with galaxy ballast. This should be enough for my tank to grow sps every where considering my tank is only 36 wide. This weekend, I built this canopy with my dad and will be floating it above my tank, just like the old 40 gallon. I still need to fill it in with wood filler, paint the inside white a couple of times, sand the outside down, and stain it a couple of times as well. This will be the first time I'm staining wood. Anybody have any suggestions? I was told to use a sponge to make it even as a brush will be very difficult. Thoughts?

So the canopy has been stained (four times to be exact). It's still not as even as I'd like it but it's okay.

I'm more concerned with my tank right now as I'm having a little bit of bleaching on a couple of my birdsnest and some of my acros. I don't know what's the issue as my parameters are in range. Maybe it's new tank syndrome. Who knows?

Got the canopy up and running now. There are 2-250 watt radiums inside Lumenmax Elite pendents. The light has been burning my coral because of the hotspot even though the bulbs are 16" above the water line. I'm thinking that I need to use the glass shield. At first, I decided not to use the glass shield because I thought I needed the par but I was definitely wrong. My sps all look like crap right now. I will be working on finishing the aquascape on the right side. I'm thinking about a mid-sized pillar that goes to about half the height of the tank, just above where the Tunze is. Thoughts?

the tank still looks crowded if you lost so much. Beautiful and full!! I like the stag on the right next to the green acro and the one behind it. Its a really nice tank Justin

I wonder if the tank was ever stable to begin with before you added all those coral.

5 months is not a long time to setup a proper ecosystem and have it stabilized.

The liverock I used in my system has been with me for over 10 years. My old 40 gallon may not have been a "proper ecosystem" but I was getting great growth and the tank was relatively stable until I decided to move it to a bigger tank.

I see... Well it sure helped to use established rock- any chance you ever figure out what caused the crash?

In any case, the new tank looks 10x better.

If ur running mogul sockets I wouldn't add the glass unless u don't want the splash. Have u tried to cut the photoperiod.

Nice tank btw.
