Juvi Blueline Angelfish

Both of mine have grown as much as bradleyj's and are doing great. Although I did have to seperate them about a month ago. I had them with my 9" blueline and there wasn't an issue the whole time until suddenly one day one of them was beating the heck out of the other. I mean non stop. So now I have a pair and a single.

I've had mine for almost 2 months and so far all its eating is Nori on the clip. It goes after it with a purpose, but thus far ignores everything else.

My blueline was growing fast and doing great until I killed her along with several other fish a few weeks ago. The main pump got left off all night so I'm guessing it was either a drop in oxy levels, PH drop, or perhaps a combination of these and other factors. My majestic (along with my rabbitfish, clowns, damsels, and tang) showed no ill effects but it killed both the blueline and my meridithi along with a fairy wrasse and a filefish. I'm guessing this genus of angelfish is a bit less rugged than the Pomacanthus or Holacanthus.

This was the toughest loss in over 30 years in this hobby for me, probably because it was totally preventable. Definately need to automate the feeding cycle so the pumps turns back on even if I brain fade.

I loved the blueline so much I picked up two more a few weeks back from LA, just a great fish. I am really hoping to pair them up in the display tank. They came in looking good and feeding right away. One came in at a little over two inches and is a lot more active and a better feeder. The smaller of the two came in at about 1 5/8 inches and is a lot fussier but is getting nice and fat in the refugium anyway, all of the sponges in there are gone and it is showing more interest in the mysis. The smaller one is a lot more shy but the big one is quite bold already. Both are getting the bluelines and the yellow bands are fading as well. Going to try real hard not to kill these.

Just picked up a blueline today, still has its stripes and yellow bar, had to build an egg crate cage to keep it in the DT until it get a little more acclimated and hopefully my flame can mellow out before I let her go. Any info that you can share with there care is appreciated. Good to hear yours are doing well in a reef environment as mine will be in a mixed reef also, hope for the best with that.

Can I ask where you got yours? I am from Appleton and live in Milwaukee.

My experience with this species has been very positive. This is by far the smallest juvenile angel species that I have tried to keep and of the three juvenile fish I have kept two were aggressive feeders. My little one now has been snapping at fortified brine, mysis, and cyclopease but has yet to feed well on prepared food. Doesn't seem to matter in my fuge, she is constantly nipping and fattening up anyway so I'm guessing she is finding plenty to eat in there.

A very bold and personable species they seem to hold their own even in boisterous tanks. I kept my last one with much larger majestic and meridithi angels and other that the occasional "get out of my way" nip from the meredithi there were no problems. Mine had gone from juvie coloration to a small adult coloration with no changes in interaction with the other fish. Two of mine quickly learned to eat just about everything; shrimp, gel food, pellets, nori, and I'm sure the other one will as soon as she has eaten all the stuff she really likes in the fuge.

I have been lucky as far as reef safeness is concerned so far. Two of the fish have eaten aiptasia as well but other than the occasional nip at one of the leathers there have been no concerns, can't speak about SPS, LPS, zoo's, clams, ect.

My new angel seems to be adapting well, the flame tries to cause trouble every now and again but the little blueline just evades the aggression and goes on like nothing ever happened, so far so good.

I was trying to get a pic of one of the smaller ones, but got this one of the big guy instead. Excuse the quality of the pic as I did it with my phone. That white thing in the bottom is the streamer of an idol.

I've had the little angel since Aug 17th, (Almost 2.5 months). Its gotten larger, and is definately showing the blue lines these guys are famous for. It was moved out of QT about 3 weeks ago into a 58 gallon tank currently occupied by a firefish, a pair of Percula clowns, an H.magnifica anemone that I've kept for a year now, an H.crispa anemone I've had for 4 years or so, a porcelein crab, and a bunch of small zoa and lps frags.

So far its still only eating Nori from the clip, but I have seen it nip at shrimp scraps I feed the LPS frags. Of course I've also seen it nip at some of my zoa frags as well, so not real thrilled about that, but I'm willing to lose some frags for the greater good of the fish.

I thought I'd post some pics...these are crappy point and shoot pics, I'm not a photographer, so bear with me...

What it looked like on the website:

Sorta looks like it had some parasites on it originally....

When I got it and was acclimating:

In QT, just beginning to get the blue stripes....small electric blue spot behind the gill plate. About 5 days after I got it:

It hasnt grown much, maybe another quarter of an inch....but the change in color is amazing in such a short time. Sorry for the craptastic photos, but you get the idea, and they show the change in coloration at least.

The overall goal is to eventually upgrade to a 250 gallon tank and house both the Blue Line and my Regal in the tank...I wont mix them until then, the Regal is just too bossy.

Had my BlueLine for 5 years now and it's my favourite fish. Great temperament, active, hardy. Mine suddenly got popeye in one of his eyes, still eating though. can't catch him so I'm going to treat with Epson Salt, hope that works! Good luck with your bluelines everyone.

Laurence,

The two times I've had a fish that devolped popeye, I let it run its course and continued to feed normally, and it cleared up on its own without incident.

Nick

I've only experienced it once, in QT, and it didn't end well. Hoping for a better result this time. :)

Other than the cloudy swollen eye, has the fish's demeanor, behaviour, or appetite changed any?

Nick

ETA- Good to see you posting again. I had fears you and/or your family (and finally your tank) were affected/injured in the earthquake...
