Kalkwasser Reactor / Stirrer Suggstions

For those that use them, which one do you like and why? What size tank do you have?

I am thinking about the Avast Marine K1. A friend has one and likes it. How much flow do you typically put through these? I've only ever added kalk to my top off water.

Why use Kalk? When I used Kalk I felt I had to clean my equipment more often because of calcification.

More so then a calcium reactor? I was looking for something easy until I get my carx online. I'd prefer not to hand dose two part if possible. Or set up a doser if that isn't the long term goal of the tank.

A few reefers swear by them so thought I'd try it out.

I have the avast K1 pretty simple set up and I like the big out put so they don't clog up. The motor is easy to swap out if need to repair.

Avast k1, litermeter pump only hooked into Apex.

Buy the YOU BUILD and it comes out really cheap. Even comes with glue lol

Are you referring to the litermeter remote pump? How do you hook that up directly to the Apex? Is there a module?

I run a GEO kalk reactor. It uses a small maxijet which lasts a couple of years if you clean it regularly. About a year to 18 months IME, when you do not clean it at all.
I keep it where it's easy to get to for adding kalk and changing the maxijet, as I am not one that's good at regimented cleaning of my equipment, especially when you're talking about a 12-15$ pump.

No that one is expensive... Just this. Comes with a normal outlet plug. I just program Apex like I would a brs doser.

.

I think I have George's first kalk reactor using the MJ powerhead. Its at least 15 years old. I have to replace the impeller once a year or so, thats because I dump in too much Calcium Hydroxide. Its a well made unit .

I'd opt to not cleaning either especially on a $15 pump. Heck I rarely clean my $300 pumps.

This is a good post. I've been thinking of supplementing my 2 part with Kalk just to see what kind of difference I'd get.

If you use sodiumhydroxide instead of calcium(bi)carbonate you receive the same pH benefit.

Just an FYI, you can run your calcium reactor effluent really slow and it will do the same thing. (Slow effluent and higher PH) If you already have the equipment, why waste money on new equipment you won't use down the road?

I can help you setup your calcium reactor. It really is easy once you understand how to use it. Very easy to get it online. Fill it with media and the programming for apex is really simple.

I didn't mean to give the impression that I thought George's equipment was anything but top shelf. Most, if not all of the acrylic in my system has a GEO sticker on it.
I should tell you that I can not vouch for GEO equipment made in the last year or two. George actually sold the company, and is not producing anymore. to be fair, I have no idea how talented the new guy is. I know George worked with him for several months as the company changed hands, I'm sure some of George's skill rubbed off on him.
In any case, I will be keeping my GEO equipment. I know it's well made, I know it performs, and I know George isn't making anymore.

I run the avast K1 with a Tunze ato. Ro water is pumped into the avast then into the sump. To solitude127 point I do have to make sure to keep the ato sensor clean.
