Karen and Rufus' Captive Bred Baby Bandits

Hey everyone,

It's been awhile since I've posted in here and I thought I'd share my latest acquisition. Some of you may have been following Karen's blog about her recent success with captive breeding Bandits that were collected by Rufus.

Well, today I was fortunate enough to receive two of her babies. I know this first clutch was pretty small and even less reached this far so I really do consider myself fortunate. I saw them back in August when I visited Rufus and Karen and they hadn't even really dropped yet and were acting more like plankton than fish so they've come pretty far in the last month or so.

To say these guys are 3/4" is being generous, but I saw them both eating so that makes me a lot less nervous. Anyway, here's a pic of video of them. If you look closely they are eating food that floats by.

My plan is to QT them for the next two weeks and then hopefully I can keep them in my reef tank with the GP's. I had a trio of WC Bandit's in my reef tank before but they liked to 'mouth' my acros a lot. They didn't actually kill the corals, but I had no polyp extension during the day. My hope is that these CB Bandits haven't developed a taste for corals and haven't learned to 'mouth' them.

Anyway, hopefully I'll be able to update this thread for years to come :)

Wayne, they are awesome! What are they eating?

Also, quick question you might be able to answer, but what is happening to the random larval fish that Frank Baensch has been raising?

Awesome! Wonderful things taking place in the hobby.

I guess Karen only breeds white angels!

Wow! Really looking forward to reading about your experiences with these guys for hopefully years to come.

Amazing! I've been following Karens progress and success with these guys. It's so great they ended up in good hands. What an awesome addition to your reef!

Awesome Wayne, congrats! I talked to Karen briefly about these a little while back, glad to hear they made it.

Hey everyone,

Yeah, this is quite an amazing accomplishment. Truthfully, I'm pretty nervous though. They're so small and fragile. I know that there aren't too many that made it this far in this run so I'm praying I'm successful in rearing these little guys.

What is involved in breeding them?? That sounds amazing!

I have no idea! But I know that breeding and hatching the eggs are only part of the challenge. The other part is finding enough suitable food for the fry during each stage of development. There's probably also a multitude of other parts that us hobbyist are unaware of!

Karen said they're eating Cyclopeze and finely chopped Mysis and Brine shrimp. She also said that they're grazing on the live rock between feedings. She's also feeding them newly hatched brine shrimp as a treat but they don't need that anymore.

When I fed them yesterday, I noticed that one only ate the Cyclopeze and the other larger one ate both the Cyclopeze and chopped Mysis.

There was a recent article on Reef(builder).com about the recent success Frank at RCT. He's successfully hatching and raising a variety of larval fish.

lol...it appears so, but she's still hopeful with Faith and Fabio. I know she's trying to breed a few other fish too but it appears only the b/w are cooperating right now. The GP's and Bandits that have spawned are in the same tank (the love tank). Maybe that has something to do with it???

Thanks to everyone else for the well wishes. Hopefully I won't let you guys down!

They are for sale, how do you think Wayne got them?:spin2: You just have to have the right connections:spin1:
