Kar's 55g Red Sea Reef Thread

The only stupidity we're promoting is allowing rude an unhelpful members to continue to be a part of this site. That is something that is no longer your problem.

Carry on!

Thank You mhurley :D

Pics of the Seio coming soon. Im hoping that the light unit will be here tomorrow.

Pretty sure he just got the ban hammer. I won the bet it only took 13 minutes

You won't have to worry about him anymore.

Getting back on track. I am not one to play tang police but don't put either of those guys in your 55. You would have to upgrade or trade them away once they got larger, and they do grow fairly quickly.

There are a bunch of fish you can go with that are nicely colored and exhibit the same grazing behavior. Dwarf Angels are a good choice. They have more of a tendency to nip clams than softies. Two dwarfs I have had good success with is the Cherub Angel and the Flame Angel. A buddy of mine also has a Coral Beauty that gives him no problems.

You would choose 1 of these for your tank as 2 together would probably fight till one died.

Again you can go with the tangs. But if you're going to have to move em out anyways, I'd go with something you can keep long term.

Also, if you go w/ a Yellow Tang try and buy them as a baby. A large majority of baby tangs come from Hawaii, where the capture methods are much more regulated than overseas. You won't have to worry about residual effects of cyanide (ie. a dead fish) in your new tang. I learned this from a guy who works for the local wholesaler who sells to all my LFS in the area.

It will definitely be a baby tang. My LFS has been getting shipments of like 4-5cm ones lately. They also have PBT the same size i have to slap myself before i get the guy there to bag it up.

I'd probably go w/ the Tomini. I've seen how fast Yellow Tangs can grow, and they get really really mean as soon as they get the slightest feeling of being cramped at all.

p.s. hurray my avatar finally works.... kept having to resize it -_-

Heres some pics of the Seio, I know theyre not very exciting but ive gota keep you guys goin' :D

I haven't had any experience with them personally. The Yellows I've seen slow down growth wise once they are a few years old. To be honest I would give you a year max before you had to get rid of the yellow.

Keep in mind the first thing a Tang will do when it's stressed is harass it's tank mates, and/or sprout Ick.

I've been looking around and to be honest, I don't see a lot of info on them. What I have seen suggests a a Min. 75 Gallon for the this guy. That would lead me to believe that you would have a chance to keep him a little bit longer than a Yellow that would get much larger. I would look into getting some info from someone who has had one, and get some ideas on how fast they grow.

could the seio be moded. is that a 220v plug at the end :D. im not familiar with this products, my friend has a clown tang in RSM .

Ive decided what im going to do with corals. Im going to start with softies and eventually when the tank gets mature i will move onto SPS

Oh the sumps fine i bought that brand new, Its the display tank that has copper. I will empty it either this weekend or next and then thorougly clean with vinegar and RO water as recommended by Randy Holmes Farley.

What do you think would be the best size drain and return pump on this tank? Also will i need certain size teeth on the overflow?

sorry but im not that good with your size setup. i know my friend 72gal bow sps dominated uses ehiem canister, oct-200 recir skimmer, 250 heater, vortech and tunze 6025 setup for about a year now.
