Kar's 55g Red Sea Reef Thread

Nah, you're not going to have enough lift out of a pump that size to run a closed loop. I always find it's a better idea to have those two systems run independantly. If one pump goes out, you've got a better chance for outcome if the other is still running.

The return size doesn't necessarily have to be the same size as the drain plumbing. I use a soft black tubing from Home Depot that I think is 3/4". It just needs to be big enough that it's not impeding the flow or restricting it in any way. You really don't want you return size to be bigger than your drain though. That could cause problems.

I think ill go with powerheads then, maybe ill go to closed loop one day. So i could go with 25mm drain and then 22mm return?

Im wondering if i could remove that acrylic partition on the tank, I wouldnt call it a brace because its flexible so i doubt its doing anything.

Let me try to edit this again.

That is actually a brace designed by the manufacturer. I feel you would be taking a chance of a crack or worse by removing it.

Your lights do look really good on your tank nice choice :).

Did you decide not to replace your rocks? or have you already done it?

I was just wondering since you said you had a copper issue earlier.

edited for grammar, cheers.

Tank will be emptied either this weekend or next fish will be sold. rock will be thrown out because i doubt anyone will buy it with copper on it and then i will scrub the tank with water and vinegar and clean the koralia and skimmer.(thats the only thing im using from this tank) then hopefully by next weekend it will be cycling. For rock im going to get some egg crate and dry ocean rock and then go with Tiggsys method (if youve seen it) and then get about 5kilos of live indo rock and then put that in there to seed the other rock during cycle. :D hope this all works.

Ok i wont remove the brace then. I am going to just dump the rock thats in my tank now due to the copper, get rid of the water sand and sell the fish so i am goin to completely redo my tank, new rock, new sand, new water and everthing.

I think ill have to change two of the bulbs to blue on the light unit. This should be better for the corals right?

If you need salt try petsmart. Go on the website and print out the price for the instant ocean and they'll honor the price in the store. You can get the big bucket of it for $35.

Ok, Me and Aaron got the tank emptied today, fish were sold to a local hobbyist rock is still in the Garage incase somebody with a FOWLR may want it. Theres still some sand in the bottom but i will fill the tank tomorrow and then just syphon the sand out or vacum it.
