Kar's 55g Red Sea Reef Thread

I think if you can install individual reflectors on each light you can muster enough light, without reflectors I don't think, unless inches from the surface, SPS will grow. Also with your stocking list, correct me if I am wrong, don't parrot wrasses get large? ( 10+ inches). If so I would take that off your list.

did you cut out the center brace of the stand to fit the sump in place? whats the bag of sand?

that is a very clean looking tank. (not as in clean/dirty) but it looks very nice. just make sure you keep all your wires hidden or else it will look ugly! :D wires are ugly!

No its not a Via Aqua. Its not a parrot wrasse im getting im not sure what it is but on the website they have it as that name and it only gets around 6" i think they said. Yes i did remove the brace and its an exact fit but im not sure what to do with the calcium reactor im going to get. I may just take the bits of wood of the back of the stand, You know there just the dryboard that you get to put wires through. Yep i will be keeping the wires tidy, Hoepfully :) The bucket of sand is just the stuff i took out the tank when me and Aaron cleaned it out.

Again ive ran into a problem, I thought the lighting did have individual reflectors but i looked yesterday and it doesnt, But they do have a sheet of metal behind them that cant be removed (i will get some pics when i get home) could i just glue the reflectors to this?

Just been to the Acrylic/Aquatics place and i spoke to him about overflows etc. He says i would need a 40mm dran and 16mm return he has alot of years experience in both acrylic and reef fish.:D So im going to go with that.

I completely forgot the pipes been ordered so im going to have to go with a 25mm drain and 22mm return which is fine for me :D

Kar is in the UK. That's why the metric speak ;)

Ok, Ill convert to inches, What do you all think about the reflectors problem?

I know it might be a bit of a pain, but you could always rip the ballasts and sockets out of the fixture and put them into a canopy with reflectors. I know that would be a lot of work, but I know a buddy who did that with actinics to supplement his halides and it worked just fine.

You could also just leave them the way that they are. Pretty much the point of the reflectors are to concentrate the light from the bulbs down into the tank. Granted you won't get the same quality without them as with reflectors, but anytime that you have bulbs in a fixture like yours, you're not going to lose a whole lot of light going in other directions besided into the tank. I think that unless you can come up with an easy solution, the amount of work that would be required to put in reflectors would outweigh the benefits. JMO.

The tank is going to be open top and i dont want to rip open the fixture. Ill have to have real good look at the fixture once i get home.

sounds good kar. yea i like open tops a lot i dont know why but i just do. I like to look through the top of the water and see the fish swimming around. Cant wait to see the Light.

Ok,Ive taken a look at the fixture but this metal sheet thats behind it looks like it could be just as good as individuals as it is going up the side of the bulbs aswell (if you get that) Im a big fan of open tops aswell because i like to see the fish swimming around aswell. And i love to see the corals from above aswell.

im sorry kar, i didnt realize that your not in the US. :D i should have said "translate for thoes of us in the US who for some reason dont follow the same system of measure as the rest of the world"

how would you build a canopy for thoes lights if you ripped them apart anayways? the lights are longer than the tank arent they? you'd have to build one giant canopy, and im sure it would be way too big!
im in favor of keeping the lighthood in tact. it looks good the way it is IMO.

there is a reflector that has a mirror finish, and wraps every individual light bulb on a t5 setup, but i cant think of the name of it right now. maybe it will come back to me later???
