keeping hedgehogs w/in salt H20 design?

WaterKeeper: It sounds like your hog might have been suffering from "popeye" I have been doing some research on the treatment for hogs but have yet to find out if copper medications will hurt it or help it. As far as the distended belly, that sounds like Dropsy (Ascites) If I am able to find out more about the treatments for these diseases, I will let everyone know.

So far this is all I have been able to come up with as far as medicating your hog. It seems that antibiotics are the best thing to treat it and according to veterinarypartner.com, "After each medication, spend some quiet time with your hedgehog. You may notice your pet anointing itself, probably trying to get rid of the taste or smell of the medication. Allow your pet to relax and investigate you and talk to it in quiet tones. If there is a favorite treat food, such as a mealworm, this should be given as a 'reward' for being such a good patient. All attempts at making the medication experience as non-stressful as possible will pay off in the end with a pet that doesn't become 'medication shy' around you." This website also mentions that visiting your local vet for medication may be in order. There really wasn't anything mentioned about transporting your hog but I assume a 5gl bucket with a battery operated airpump will be sufficent.

Step By Step Hog: UPDATE
Out here on the road (sounds cooler than it is), I get to check the local lfs, Walmarts and Home Depots (in that order for tank supplies) and still cannot find habitrails that have no metal parts. The tubes, and "lofts" and towers seem reefsafe, but I really want one of those wheels. Anyone know where I can get a completely nonmetallic habitrail wheel, or links to some DIY wheels that don't have any metal?

Wifey called today with the following report:
After 5 days, it seems like they're a few pieces (babies????) up in the water column, and a few more pieces seem to have attached to the rock and in the teeth of the overflows. Has anyones elses reproduced so quickly after introduction? This may be a testament to good husbandry, but I am not sure on that.
..it could just be molting.
I can't wait to get back home and check it out, will take some pics and post them, if there's enough interest.

Waterkeeper: sorry, Sir!
____ribs gets down and does 100____

I've got the plastic wheel, but the cinder blocks weighing it down sure take up a bunch of room in my 10 gallon. Any other suggestions?

MeNoNemo,
Do you point your powerhead outlet at the wheel?
I would think this would cause microbubbles to migrate into the habitrail tubes, is that a problem?
While a powerhead pointed at the wheel is very cool, I mean VERY COOL, I understand the microbubbles with cause hoglung, which is impossible to cure. I don't want to go that way if it's going to harm anything in my tank.

On another note, I asked wifey to place the acan into a ziplock baggie, and toss it in the kitchen trashcan (tomorrow is trash day). This should make room for the floating hog-babies to settle and take hold! This is so exciting!!!!

Nah, I just clipped some of those plastic baseball cards to the outside of the wheel...think of the energy savings!

Excellent idea with the baseball cards! I love reefcentral!!!
MeNo - do the cards make a loud clicking sound as the wheel spins? I need something to scare my hitchhiker mantis shrimp into my homemade "progresso soup can" trap. Thanks for the tip!

For those who prefer keeping their hog at or near the bottom, IMO best/cheapest results can be had by going to Kmart and getting these sinkers from the fishing dept.:
Sinkers

I dip the whole set (boy scout motto: Be Prepared) with this stuff

Plastidip
It's then just a matter of selecting the right combination, the options are unlimited with this setup! I'm thinking of adding a mid-tank hog, to get more of a depth perspective look to the tank, i think a number 6 and a 3/8 will work perfectly!

Well here's my HH named Sonic.
First pic is from a year ago, when I first got him. He was pretty pale at first as you can see by the pic, but has since colored up nicely. Isn't he just so cute!?!

This pic was taken earlier today, chasing my yellow tang.

Yep, those baseball cards have a great clicking sound...and the best part is they completely drowned out the sound of that annoying pump. Very nice red "flippers" there Sever...those are a "must have" for any hog. I'm afraid to ask, but just what does Sonic do when he catches the tang?

Ribs, great find on that plastidip and sinker combo...much better fit than the cinder block! Can't wait to get started!

New on the net...

New on the net...

Can't wait to share this one...what a find! Purple hogs! These things add a great splash of color to any tank! Come in several other colors as well to match any day glo anemone decor. Of course I've been assured that, like the anemones, their colors are completely natural...

meNo,
:thumbsup:Coloring up nicely!!!!
Do you use DT's oyster stuff????
I hear it's great for vibrant color like that.

Busy week these last ummm...7 days.
Updates soon!

Where did you find that rare Hot Pink hog? That is awesome! I wish mine had that kind of coloring, but mine looks more like an urchin! I guess mine must be a subspecies that either eats urchins or mimicks them for survival...

Well, to answer the last questions about coloring up...Coral Vibrance did the trick...just poured it right in the end of the snorkel and there ya go!!!

Nice!! Now I can ask questions! Does any hog work?? or are the specific ones that are happier in the tank. Do they get burned from the hallide? or do I just have to find some hog sunscreen?

nah, the hairs on the chinchilla are too long for a reef tank... you need to shave it very frequently. Also, I think they aren't reef safe... mine kept bitting on my brain coral.
