Kelly's 300g in-wall build thread

Well I got things fixed, kinda. The reason the plan was to up the pump off the ground a bit was a space issue. However w/ much struggle we were able to fit the pump flat on the floor and plumb it. Turned it on and YEAH it worked. Oh course there were a few leaks in the plumbing but things were working. I corrected a few leaks but kept having water pool on the tile under the pump. The best I can figure is that the reeflo must have a bad seal somewhere. I thinking I may be buying a new pump..........reeflo?? or any other suggestions.

Another problem, my plan to use an old mag 12 to drain water off for water changes (or in this case to drain the tank) did not work. I have it plumbed to my drain line in the wall but the pump cannot pull from above (inside the tank). Is what I need for this a self priming water transfer pump? such as this one? http://www.amazon.com/Little-Giant-Non-Submersible-Self-Priming-Transfer/dp/B000OL8MVE/ref=sr_1_20?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1332467228&sr=1-20

two things to consider with that pump....is it stainless steel and will it be strong enough to pump the water out of the house. How many gallons is your refugium and is there anyway you can use that as the source for your water changes and plumb that into the drain line somehow? take a look at what I did with my system. I plumbed in a 65 gallon tank for the sole purpose of doing water changes. I have a mag 7 pump in the tank at all times and when I want to do my water change, I turn off the feed valve to the tank and drain it. Once its filled back up I open the valve again and I have 65 gallons of new water flowing gradually into my system. its post 199 and the last picture. Not sure if there is a way you can do it with your fuge or if you have room for another tank in your fish room.

As far as the leaky pump goes....can you see where the water is coming from? what kind of threaded fitting did you use on the inlet and outlet and did you use dope tape? If you are dripping from the outlet/inlet you might need to put more tape around the fittings and make sure they are snug. Also, do you have the return line choked back at all? Thats a big pump and it wants to move a lot of water

The pump was not leaking from either of the threaded connections. Though I do not know what "dope" tape is I did wrap it in tread tape (the pink kind). I did not have the line choked either. The pump appeared to be leaking from within the pump itself.

I decided to just buy a new reeflo barracuda/hammerhead hybrid. It should arrive by Wednesday. I also purchased the water transfer pump from above. I know this is an expense, but I want everything set up correctly and user friendly from the start.

Due to space limitations it is not easy to re-plumb things or disconnect pumps. The large white shelf case we built to hold the water reservoirs and frag tank is quite cumbersome and heavy. It must be pulled completely out of the fish room to get to the pump (unfortunately). As it is I was lucky to talk my man into letting me take 70 sf of our living room for a fish tank.

The delay is aggravating but is probably needed as I am behind on school work. I have 2 papers due this week, one on monday morning. So I am headed back to the books for a few days and will update when available.

BTW, I received my new dry sides for the MP60s and changed them out, it was rather easy. I will be shipping back the damaged dry sides in a prepaid postage box provided by Ecotech! There customer service was great.

pretty amazing. this is one of those "some day" threads. Cause "some day" I'll do something this cool!

thanks rl225, I cant wait to get this project finished (or at least get some water, coral and fish in).

Steve, things have been a bit slow due to school and I am waiting for the water transfer pump to arrive, it should be here in a day or two. Got the new reeflo hammerhead/barracuda hybrid and got it plumbed. Its just a matter of days. I have my last paper for this semester to write today, then it should be smooth sailing until June during which time I am going to spend a lot of time on my tank. How are things with your build?

oh yeah, forgot to mention, placed top on bar, and framed the tank in the wall w/ molding. it looks pretty good, still have to paint it and the back of the tank. will post pics when I can.

Update!! Water test: PASSED!! See the video!

Update!! Water test: PASSED!! See the video!

Finally got everything worked out. Installed the reeflo barracuda/hammerhead hybrid. the hammerhead was too much power so I had to change out the impeller (I will leave out the painful details of that ordeal). I have everything plumbed, water flowing, MP60s in place. Still have to add lights. Will start aquascaping soon. Will drain the tap water soon. I am in the process of making a bunch of ro/di. It wont be much longer!!

The video is a bit long, but if you wait til the end you can see the room which the tank will be viewed (take note how quiet it is.....I really insulated the wall between the fish room and the living room. I sill have to put a door on the fish room to quiet the noise in the kitchen.

Also please check out my thread in the fish forum for my intended fish list, I have no replies :sad1: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2153427

Wow.....everything looks great and so organized!!!!! I had a feeling the hammer would be a little too much. I will take a look at your stock list.

Thanks steve. i am banged up and bruised up from all the lifting, pushing, pulling, & plumbing. Had to go to work to get a break. Were u able to watch through the end of the video and notice how quiet in living room? We placed sheet rock, hardy plank, and insulation. I am impressed with the sound buffering. now if i can just quiet down the kitchen side, lol.

I hear ya!!!! no matter how many times I clean out the fish room it gets messed up again and trying to keep track of two systems right now is draining me.

Rockscape Complete, Water in.......cycling!!

Rockscape Complete, Water in.......cycling!!

I created structures w/ pvc and light filter to attach rock to w/ zip ties. I covered the overflows with these structures.

I now have numerous bruises, cuts, and scrapes all over my hands and arms, and I am feeling like I have been hit by a truck, but the rock, sand, and water are in. It will be a few days of recovery before I try to level out the sand and fill in a few gaps on the rockwork. I am wore out!

bought an adhesive black background which I will be attaching soon. I haven't hung my lights yet, the lighting in the pics above is strictly from the fish room.

I have enjoyed reading through your build, everything looks great. Like someone posted earlier "some day". Looking forward to more pics.
