Kelly's 300g in-wall build thread

I have enjoyed reading through your build, everything looks great. Like someone posted earlier "some day". Looking forward to more pics.

Thanks so much. I am trying to be a good reefer and wait before adding livestock. But I can hardly wait. However, having done this a few times, I am less enthusiastic about checking ammonia levels. I havent checked anything yet and system has been up and running with rock for 3 days.

Anyone have an opinion if I should even see a cycle since I literally pulled rock from one tank an put it in another? All sand is new. Running GFO, carbon, skimmer, and biopellets.

So when can I put my fish in?? They have been miserable in a 30g cube for 2 1/2 months.

Got fish in (ones from my old tank). They are happy, lol. all is well except i have microbubles gallore. I think it is from my return lines, gonna check it out on my next day off. Got some macros, pods, and mangroves ordered for the fuge. some sps, zoas, and few mushrooms in route as well as a flame angel, midas blenny, and 2 firefish to go into QT.

I set up my RKE net yesterday but cannot get the PC1 to work. i guess i will call tech support on monday. will post pics asap.

Let me know what you think about the stick-on background. I used one on my 55 reef a while back but water kept dripping between the background and my tank and it would dry leaving salt residue. I'm interested to see how yours works out!

I am pleased for the most part with the stick on background. I purchased it from http://www.thatpetplace.com/aquarium-supplies/self-adhesive-backgrounds#!self-adhesive-backgrounds Unfortunately I did not put mine on before I put my tank in the wall so it was quite difficult to put it on the sides as there is a narrow gap between tank and wall. The key to success IMO is getting a spray bottle, fill w/ water and dish detergent. completely saturate the glass and the adhesive side of the background so that it slides into place. Then have a few people handy with some credit cards or similar PLASTIC item to rapidly smooth out the bubbles. It is fimly attached and looks great on the backside of my tank. However, there were few airbubbles on the sides I simply cannot reach.

Update.......I am about to loose my mind!

Update.......I am about to loose my mind!

So, here we go...........Fish are doing wonderful. Water parameters are wonderful. Water is clear. Starting to see diatoms and some hair algae, I know this is to be expected.

Here is the problem list.....

Microbubbles galore! I have tried just about nearly everything:
1. I have siliconed around all threaded fittings and added more PVC cement around the other fittings, with the exception of the intake for the reeflo barracuda, it is about 3 inches beyond my reach and it would take hours to move everything out of my 70 square foot fish room to get to it. I did see some salt creap around one fitting, so this was probably contributing to the bubbles but this has been sealed and no further evidence of leak from this site. I was trying to find a sort of spray sealant w/ a nozzle so I could reach the last fitting that I fear may be contributing to my bubbles, but no such luck so far.

2. The sump is 75g (48x18x18). There are a lot of bubbles in the first chamber of the sump where the drain lines enter the sump. Here is a pic when first set up which doesn't show the bubbles, but you can see how it is set up.
picture.php

there is no airsucking noted in the return portion of the fuge either. 2 drain lines feed the sump through two 7 inch 100 micron filter socks. The 3rd small line in the drain side of the sump is a return line from my fuge. the return lines have holes drilled into them, which I thought was the right thing to do, but I am beginning to wonder. So I replaced one of them w/ pvc without holes and did not notice much difference between the two. The sump has a total of 6 baffles, 3 at the drain side, 3 at the return side. The first baffle on the drain side is 11 inches high and water flows over it, then under the second baffle with is 1 inch off the bottom of the tank, then over a 9'' baffle which is the depth of the main area of tank where skimmer and biopellet reactor are. Flowing into tank about midway are a return line from the frag tank which is submerged fully and a return line from a BRS dual reactor running GFO and carbon. I did not run these 2 returns through a filter sock. I did inspect with a flash light at night and the bubbles do not appear to be coming from there. Finally the water flows over a 9 inch baffle, under another baffle 1 inch from bottom of tank and over a 8 inch baffle to the return area of the sump. I have a 2 inch bulkhead w/ a threaded pvc 90 attached, facing toward the bottom of sump. There is no sucking sounds or visible water being pulled from the surface of return section.

3. The skimmer was overflowing a bunch and i figured it was just breaking in, but today I broke down and elevated it 3 inches and it is no longer overflowing. It is a reef octopus 5000. I dont think the skimmer is the source.

4. Now for the last phase of my trouble shooting. There is about a 4-5 inch drop from the top of the overflows to the intake of the drain line. I DIY'd my own drain lines. You can see the overflow in this pic, it is the same minus the cap at the top of the "u" shaped portion of the drain line which I removed because it was not working correctly.
picture.php

Now water flows smoothly however there are some bubbles I believe due to the 4-5 maybe more inches drop from overflow to drain. The problem is I used PVC cement to attach the top PVC fitting so I cannot simple unscrew the return line. I will have to cut the "u" shaped piece first, untwist, remove the drain line, attach a cuppling and attach a new "u" piece. I have no problem doing this, but I dont want to do it if this isn't the problem.

Any suggestions? I am at my witts end with these microbubbles. You can see what I am talking about in this video, with the MH on they are even more evident.

And on to my next problem............ I have never used a calcium reactor before and set mine up today. I have dual gauges and a solenoid. I turned the CO2 on before plugging in the solenoid and when I did plug it in it blew the top of my reef octopus calcium reactor (brand new). It looks like I should be able to reseal it as the top separated at the seams. What should I use to reseal it with?

I have several other issues with the tank, and to complicate matters I have finals next week, so i really need to focus on school but am totally preoccupied with the tank. I dont have time to post more pics at this time, but I have set up a 10g and a 20g QT, hung lighting for display and frag tank, and I have a mimic tang in QT. Today I stayed home all day because a delivery of CUC, flame angel, and midas blenny, as well as some frags were supposed to arrive today, but they didn't for some reason. I ordered from reefs2go, mainly because their CUC are pretty cheap and shipping is free. I tried to call and they were closed. Hopefully my fish and CUC are OK, will keep you all posted. Now I must go study................

wow....i can feel your stress in your writing! What does the return section in your sump look like? how high is the water level in that section? I put live rock in mine to help break up any microbubles before getting sucked up by the return pump. Although, the video does look like you are getting air from somewhere in the lines. So you might want to check for a loose fitting or something.

I have managed to lessen the amount of microbubbles tremendously, but I am still not 100% satisfied. Still have some airbubbles. I will continue to troubleshoot after my final on Tuesday. I extended the drain line from the frag tank and the dual BRS reactor to the 1st chamber of the sump and into a filter sock. I only had one filter sock that was felt and put it on one of the sock holders. The felt sock seems to contain the bubbles much more effectively. I have since ordered more felt socks, they should be in later this week. I also raised the level of water in the last chamber of the fuge which drains to the sump, this too seemed to help. I have purchased a spray silicon which I will attempt to reach some more of the connections. I am also going to apply silicon to all drain lines returning to the sump as I think some of the bubbles may be coming from the drain lines into the sump. There are a zillion bubbles in the 1st chamber of the sump most w/in the filter socks. I have ordered some more LR rumble and will consider putting some in the return section of the sump if things dont improve.

Other than the microbubbles, all is going well. I currently have a 10g long and a 20g cube set up for QT. In the QTs I have a 3'' mimic tang which is healthy and eating well, I bought from a local LFS. In the other QT I have a 2'' flame angel and firefish goby which I got from reefs2go. I bought a large CUC, 2 tiger conchs, 4 mexican turbos, 10 nerite, 80 blue leg hermits, 40 mexican red leg hermits, 4 scarlet hermits, 60 naissarus snails, 4 peppermint shrimp, 50 cerniths, & 20 astro snails, they are plowing through the hair algae and daitoms.

I also ordered a few frags from reefs2go, a tiny pinks birds nest, some sort of acro, a few mushrooms and zoas, and 2 sea fans. I am terrible at names of sps, but will post some pics later this week. from the LFS I purchased a red digita and red monticap as well as some zoas.

I am going to try using weld on to fix my calcium reactor later this week. for now I am using calc and 2 part for calcium.

I purchased a really cool web cam for $99 which allows me to view my tank real time from my iphone. It is awesome. Last night I was at my sisters bday party, viewed the tank and saw more microbubbles so I went home to find my ATO not working correctly. It gives me some piece of mind for sure.

thanks kelly. I am going to look into setting a couple up in my fish room and on the tank so I can see it when away.

A few pics of progress.

A few pics of progress.

Some quick pics. Will elaborate later. Fish in tank I have had for 5+ years. The flame angel & mimic tang are in separate QTs.

I love the tank. This is a very exciting thread to follow. I wish my wife would let me get a bigger tank. So for now I will have live my dream through you. :)

Hey just a note. That flame angel is not likely to be reef safe. I've had twomdwarf Angels A beautiful coral beauty that would nip at SPS corals in my 120 and almost killed one. I later got a bicolor Angel that is in my 46 gallon tank. I put some Xenia in there to get it out of my main tank and it has eaten all of the heads off. No biggie for me because I don't want the Xenia. I did try putting an Acan in there and was pecking on it like a woodpecker. I pulled Acan and moved it to my reef tank.

The dwarf angels are beautiful but not worth the risk unless you want to feed them your corals. Swallowtail Angels are reef safe.

Bicolors are notoriously bad nippers. My coral beauty has been an excellent reef dweller for the last 6 years. No need to worry about the flame. I think he is going to die tonight : (. He arrived with a few spots of ich (looked like salt on his body)and i did a FW dip. I have added prazi (sp) daily. All spots were gone and i slowly brough salinity down to 1.009. He was eating well and active through last night. The pic above was last night. He had no spots last night. Today (5pm) when i got up for work (i work nights), he was covered in white film and breathing rapidly. I did a quick fw dip with methylene blue for 10sec. He didnt look well but i had to leave for work. I am sad about this but the odds were against him on arrival. I purchased him from reefs2go. well im at work and gotta go.

I can't believe how much youve gotten done with such a busy schedule. Great work!

Thanks. I wish I had more time to work on things. This project began early February and I work on it every chance I get. It's truly my passion. Now that it a built in fixture in my living room I am even more motivated to make it just right. I have 2 weeks off school, so I should have time to make some more progress.

Now to find that money tree so I can buy some more coral!

Update

Update

Just a quick update. I bought some frags from a fellow RC member. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2164799

They are doing well despite my calcium reactor is not fixed yet. I had to order the weldon online. It should be in tomorrow. The flame angel died in QT after my last post : (.

I did purchase my prize fish from LADD. Here is a quick video. He is eating well!
