Kessil A350

Okay, I have been running them for a couple of weeks now and I believe everyone in my tank is Happy. I know this is an SPS forum and I do not have any yet, however I thought I would give an update. One of the best benefits I see is my Chiller is not coming on. I have built an extension on my canopy to hide the light fixtures and even in the box the lights do not put off heat. I have removed the glass from the top of my tank and it seems fine. The last time I tried to remove the glass with my T5s running I had was too much condensation on the canopy. The colors are great and my plate corrals seem to be happier and look much brighter. I took a video but am not happy with it, as soon as I get a chance I will try again and post it.

My tank is a 90 gal. 18X24X48 Thanks. Joe

I am happy to see it, but one thing I noticed, it says DiCon FiberPotics instead of FiberOptics. I hope they clear that up before final release. :-)
 
Just FYI, RB (R e e f B u i l d e r s) just posted something very interesting about the A350. I believe that the video is of the A350 since when I demoed the unit, the output is what I saw. It's pentiometer based controls do allow 0-100% control of the blue and white channels, just like in the video.
 
Regarding price, I'm guessing somewhere near $425, which is a great deal considering the output and control.
 
Well the color looks good, it will be interesting to see the difference in PAR #s throughout the different settings. I don't think they'll be over the 400 dollar mark, atleast I hope not.

I still want to see it running over an SPS tank with great results before I pull the trigger.
 
Agreed, without PAR #s or real-world applications it's just a light. I think PAR #s at different settings would be hard to replicate since pentiometers are far from accurate. However, I would be curious to see the #s at 100% white/blue, 100%/50% white/blue, something along those lines, so at least we have something to compare it to, though 100% output numbers is all that's really necessary.

With regards to price, if it is indeed 2.5x an A150, then anything less than $500 would be a good price.

I agree with the complete opposite of this. PAR is designed to measure the radiation for plants not corals. It disregards some of the light the our coral need. Apogee even explains this on their site. http://www.apogeeinstruments.com/quantum/spectralresponse.html

The real world application is that it is the only LED designed for reef aquariums, with specifically grown diodes made to simulate a reef environment and a glass lens to help this spectrum shine to it's fullest.

I get what you are saying though. You would like to know if it is bright enough and if anyone has had good luck growing coral with it before it is validated as a "good" light.
 
Jason, the Apogee works best to show changes in intensities, not for accurate numbers. I rely on Sanjay for accurate numbers and when I do use an Apogee hobby grade meter, it is just to correlate one bulb to the next. I know you understand this, but not everyone does. They are accurate enough for that purpose but inaccurate for a true reading. That is why I am eager for him to test one, without that testing it is hard to say much about the light other than it is a cool one. I am like you, it's the one that has me the most interested. Are you still using the A150's?

PAR #s are far from perfect. My point is that we need some sort of reference to compare it to other lights. If we find that PAR #s are extremely low (which I doubt) then we know that we'll need multiple units and we'll need to calculate this versus other units.

+1. Exactly my point -- we need it for comparison, not an end-all-be-all. But it's a lot better than someone saying "well, it LOOKS brighter on my tank" which I've heard countless times. Then folks will post photos and saying it looks good, but we know how far that will take us. ;-)

I do agree that the A350 is one of the most anticipated lights coming to the market right now.

I can agree on that. And yes The Sky Blue is still rockin on the 29 Biocube. Gonna change to Red Sea Coral Pro on it tomorrow.
 
For what its worth, I'm a little surprised that for all the research and hype with LEDs these days...that this long awaited release is for a light that only uses white and blue. With all the "complaints" about how white and blue alone doesn't quite look right and yet this long awaited product is just that. White and blue.

Having said that...the video of the tuna-blue it does look good.
 
I was thinking the same thing can someone explain why this light is so special, why would you buy this over other lights ?
 
The only answer I can think of is from their website. They are using led technology, but they are utilizing it better than previous applications. It DOES look like a better light, but time will tell.
 
From my understanding these are supposed to put out UV, I think it is a little more than white/blue. I don't understand it or care to get into the minute details but from the reading I do that is what I am led to believe. If it is over 500 it better be all I hope and then some. My 400w now comes on at 11 pm due to heat, if this light can compete with a 300w radium(which would be right in between what a 250/400 halide is meant to be run at) I'll take one, if not I'll be the only one in my house that looks at my tank for the next 6 months of summer.
 
Thats what I realy like about these lights. No Heat. My chiller has not came on since I installed them three weeks ago. I am in Calif and it is verry miled to cool weather right now however with My T 5s the Chiller was comming on throught the day. My tank is not at bright as it was with the T 5s and there are more shadow areas with the 2 Kessil A 350s. I do know my tank looks much nicer with these lights and I will now try to add some sps to my tank
