Kessil A350

I was in the local fish store today and asked if and when they would be getting the A350's in. The clerk directed me to another clerk who had actually had a demo A350 for a weekend to check out. He was impressed with them. I asked if he had checked PAR and he had. I asked if the PAR meter had been calibrated and it had. I read earlier that some of you, rightfully so, use the PAR numbers for setting lights only and not for much else. However, for what's it's worth he said in a 30" tank at about a 60% intensity setting they measured 130 at the bottom and 500 at the surface. The lights were hung close to the surface.

I asked when they would be getting them for sale. He said not until probably September. He had talked with the distributor who relayed this info to him. I'm assuming since I was off the street asking the questions in his store that it's no secret. Kessil apparently wants to get it right and doesn't like how much it takes to set up the lights by using the nob at the top. You have to turn it to adjust intensity and another for colors. Then step back and check it out. Then adjust some more.

Kessil apparently wants a different way to adjust these so it's easier. It took the clerk and the distributor about an hour to "dial in" the desired lighting.

The clerk also said they weren't as nice as Radions (not sure of the spelling here), in his opinion, except that the selling point is these is the intensity goes deeper. He liked that. Kessil, via the distributor, is saying they should be good up to 40".

I was at the store after reading this thread via Google last night while looking for LED lighting options for a second reef frag tank. I'm still not sure what direction I'll go, LED or T5's or MH. I have a 2 MH set that came with a 240g tank I bought a while ago but I don't know yet if it works or not. I have T5's in a 135 gallon reef aquarium that was given to me about a month ago. It was full of stuff and I'm thinking of taking frags and putting them in the secnd tank. But I don't have lights for reef purposes for a second reef tank. I have a bunch of tanks but they're all set up for fresh water.

I think I have enough equipment, other than lights, to set up the 240g tank. The 240g came with a 2 1/2 foot tall skimmer which runs on two Rio 1700's. No idea what brand it is. I have a fair sized pump which came with a 160g tank I bought that had been a salt fish only tank. And I have plenty of extra tanks around to use as sumps or whatever.

LED looks like the way to go because of lower operation costs and bulb longevity. I'm just not sure that the technology has hit it's prime from what I've read here and elsewhere. I'd like to see some year long results on some LEDs first. Maybe it's there and I just haven't found it yet.

Anyway that's why I'm here. Just checking out lighting options. The Kessil discussion here was pretty interesting reading for a "newbie" to this board. I've been interested in a salt tank for years but the cost... I've had fresh water tanks for over 50 years. This is my first foray into salt. And it had to be a reef tank they gave me...

For what it's worth I just joined RC the other day. Thanks for the exciting reading! Also, I plan to attend the FRAG meeting in Scottsdale(?), AZ next week if I can make it.

First welcome Weyrman. This is prob the best site to find any info. Second and no offense but i hope that the sales person you where talking too is wrong on the release date i was hoping for release date closer to Juneish but we will see next week when Kessil gives us some info.

For what it's worth he said the date info he received was on Monday this past week.

And just hoping for a bit of luck I also asked if there were any chance of "demoing" a demo or even buying one. He didn't think so... It sure doesn't hurt to ask!

If I had to guess, which I am, I think Kessil is being conservative about getting this into the market. But that may be a good thing. If it takes folks in the know an hour to dial this product in correctly then folks like me, without the tools to set it up correctly, could/will screw things up. Then Kessil could get poor press from novices like me. Not because it's not doing the job correctly but because it isn't dialed in correctly and needs an easier, more fool proof setup system.

This reef stuff has been a kick the last few weeks. Trying to get smart quick and hoping I don't screw up in the process. I'm finding RC full of good info.

I am not sure why it would take an hour to dial the lights in? Took me about 1 minute. It’s a simple matter of personal preference.

Just do the thing like Ecotech, release this one now and come out with a new one next year that is setup for a controller. I honestly think getting these over tanks and getting feedback is the best option in our market, we are not shy with them.

Trying to imagine another way of adjusting colour and brightness..
Whether it's Radion, Maxspect or Vertex surely all lights are adjusted in the same way.
Simple pots or elaborate controllers the method is the same isn't it?
A shopkeepers job to push what's in stock, not sure I believe they're still in development given the Marine Depot vid & Joe's testimony.
Glad you still have a tongue Joe, I was worried you'd been silenced 8)

+1. It's like those commercials -- set it and forget it. Adjusting the color output is simple -- two knobs. One for blue and one for white. You adjust it to where you like it and you're done. If you have two or more, you adjust one, then look at the pentiometers settings (say, 9 o'clock blue and 11 o'clock white), and copy the settings. Obviously, this is not an exact science, but it should work for most people.

+1. I think the gen 1 will sell well. I thought that A350s with the same color temperatures as the A150s would've sold well. People who buy Kessil are more focused on output than controllability at this point, or they'd go with another light with more control. Especially if the price is low, these are an easy replacement for halide (and you have NO control over the color output of halide).

The method is not the same -- the other lights you mentioned have multi-control of many different color channels other than simply white and blue. This is done with by hooking up a laptop (Radion) or via onboard controls, and the output can be changed via program throughout the day. The pentiometer method is very rudimentary in comparison, but I personally think this is all the control some people need. If they need more, they'd go with another product. It's worse with the A150s since they don't offer any control, which is why I don't understand why Kessil doesn't release them as-is. To me, it seems as if everything is ready to go, all the way down to the packaging.

People who buy now know that there may be a more controllable (be it onboard control or via a web interface) version coming down the road, but at a higher price. In other words, those people buying now are probably going to be happy with the control they have -- though not a lot -- since it's better than no control at all.

You folks are way past my level on this subject. But reading these posts and all I'll get there soon enough I'm sure.

Maybe I'll get there but I don't see that just setting light intensity levels and leaving it is the best way for a novice. Maybe this is like working on a car engine and needing a 16mm socket to remove a bolt. You folks could just look at the loose sockets in the tool box and know which one it is. Others may have to actually look at the stamped size on various different sockets in order to get the correct one (or get a color coded set).

And from what several of you say above about Radion (I think) using a computer to control the lighting makes something the clerk said make more sense to me now. He said they wanted to be able to control or set the lighting by computer but had a patent issue to work through first.

I'm probably in the boat with those of you who would like to get a set of these things. I can always learn how to adjust them. What seems to count now is having a low watt high output alternative with a good light spectrum. With high gas prices the cost of electricity is sure to follow.

On the Kessil Facebook page they say they will announce the time a date of the special event.

I had an email into Kessil about the A350 and they told me "We are making an announcement on Facebook and our Kessil page on April 19 about our Kessil line. Stay tuned!"

I'm considering getting two of these for my 150 mixed reef.

My 60"x8 bulb ATI Powermodule may put out enough light to fry an egg at 10 feet, but it puts out enough light to fry an egg at 10 feet. I have trouble with acans and the like, and I think 2 A350s over my 60"x24"x24" tank might give a good enough spread overall to have more variety of corals.

Does anyone else love seeing all the Airbus A350 news when they're googling for the Kessil light? Looks like a nice aircraft!

saw on their facebook site that some "dates" should be released tom. Hopefully its soon. I would like to hear some more experience from the "testers" and some reviews from the first people who buy them. I'm really interested in these lights. Kind of wondering about the intensity charts they have listed. I cant really make a whole lot out of them.

I can't find any info on the A350 on their site, they did change their homepage to annouce the upcoming event. And there is a Tuna in the upper right of the picture.

Awwwman, they took down the specs page! I knew I should have printed it out!!! It was up last night on their website.

What does it matter? You know they are close to an official announcement so what difference is a few days or a week going to make to the actual light? You won't be able to get it any sooner than it is released for sale. Patience is a good thing. :-)
