Kole Tang...My first DD purchase.

i took the nori out, he didn't seem interested and i didn't want it disintegrating. i have some ulva in my sump, might put a tiny piece of that in for him. there is some live rock in the qt with some algae and there's algae on the back wall he's been out picking at. he's also eat a little mysis and brine shrimp. he's the shyest fish i've had so far!

Kole tangs have vision like a hawk. My QT is in the unfinished side of my basement and the door is 25 feet from the tank. If he sees any movement in that doorway he darts into a cave. My display tank is in my office where I work so hopefully once I am able to move him he will come out more.

Wow. That is kind of scary. What have you been feeding him?
 
I've found the koles very active nature doesn't lend them to be quite as tolerant of the QT. They graze non stop... I would not QT 8-10 weeks here. It's just not a good environment for them
 
i was reading about this very thing online today. one article said it wasn't a good idea to qt them for that very reason. but then i see one in qt with ich at 4 weeks?? holy moly!

If I can not get mine eating regularly in QT by the end of the weekend I may be rolling the dice and putting him in the DT.

Omega One Super Veggie Green Seaweed. He eats half a sheet every day which seems like a lot to me but I guess they do graze constantly in the wild.

Edit: I just did the math. Half a sheet is .01666 ounces of seaweed. Now it feels like I'm starving him... :)

Thanks. I will pick some up tomorrow and see if he will go for it. Is he eating it off a clip?
 
Right now he is very active and seemingly healthy. He is constantly trying to graze on the glass and PVC. I think he would be able to find plenty to eat in my DT.

It would be nice if DD gave you a list of what they did during their QT procedure for the exact fish you purchased. I would think all tangs (ie: ich magnets) would get copper by default.

Supposedly they do...

"Other fish such as Angelfish, tangs, certain genus of wrasse, and several other specific species are given therapeutic saltwater baths. These baths contain praziquantel or other medications that eliminate flukes, protozoan, and parasites commonly found on wild fish.

To combat common bacterial infections such as Vibrio, therapeutic baths containing antibiotics such as kanamycin, nitrofurazone, Neomycin and other commercial antibiotics are given. Open wounds on fish are treated and healed with a special topical treatment. In addition to the baths, all quarantined fish are treated with copper sulfate and a 37% formaldehyde solution to combat Amyloodinium ocellatum and Cryptocaryon irritans."
 
I just have to say, with all the stress of shipping and repeated acclimating maybe just a fresh water dip and straight into the display tank is equally beneficial and no less risky.
 
I was feeding my DT Hikari Mysis so I tossed a bit into the QT. He actually ate some...but also tasted and spit out some. I would say it was 40/60 eating/spitting.

A little progress.
 
Tank transfer method, 2 weeks, ich free.... Please don't put him the display with Ich. Copper will also work for 4 weeks.
 
There is no way I would put him in the DT if he has ich...but I am also not going to treat him for ich if I do not think he has it.
 
BTW, this is the DT he is going in incase anyone is curious. He will be the last fish added and my "show fish".

i'm gonna do a whole lot more reading but at this point (or any point, for that matter), the thought of spreading ich to my dt and the nightmare that would be, far outweighs the thought of *possibly* losing one fish to the stress of qt.
 
true, peter. my only concern is that he gets enough to eat while in qt for 4 weeks. given the fact that they graze constantly, i hope the nori i provide along with occasional meals of mysis, etc., and the little bit of algae on the live rock in my qt, he will get enough to sustain him.

my qt is in a fairly dark corner in my kitchen so it's easy to monitor and even though there is a fair amount of activity between me and 2 giant dogs, it's a peaceful spot. :)
 
Ich is why I always start off QT with TTM. Two weeks to guarantee no ich is good for peace of mind, and allows me to cut down on QT time substantially.
