Just wondering if anybody has these pumps on a wave maker. I have 2 MJ1200 with the algae free mod in my 180 right now, Thinking about gettign 2 of the 6's instead of 2 more modded MJ's.

Cant afford any tunzes or vortechs at this time. Trying to get as much flow in the tank before I start adding SPS and clams. Any advice/info is appreciated.
 
can these pumps be put on wavemakers?

i know hydor makes two sets of powerheads (1-4 series) that can be controlled ONLY by their wavemaker. so basically for example, there is a constant speed koralia 2 and a variable speed koralia 2.
 
Not sure if you can. I should have asked that question instead. I know I have a non controllable koralia 2 that I plugged into my wave maker and never had a problem with it. Its just too small for my tank right now. I believe the biggest controllable they have iout right now is the 4. I want something with a little more flow.
 
good luck with the non controllable k2 in the wavemaker since i have heard of them breaking; not meant to have their speed regulated. i believe it resulted in motorburn outs....

Ya but at the risk of shortening the life of your pump. Even the controllable versions weren't made to be turned on and off constantly like the cheaper controllers do. To run the controllable Koralias you really need a wavemaker that ramps the power up and down but never truly shuts them off.
 
One version is 120v and the other is 12v. Although they may appear the same the difference in voltage is what allows the 12v versions to be run on some controllers. Tunze uses a similar design on their controllable pumps as well. Thats why the 6025 and 6045 nanostreams are non controllable. They both use 110v not 12 like the rest of their powerheads.

I have never seen anyone post that they have burned out a Koralia using it on a variable timer. I have had five of them on variable timers myself for 2 years now.
One problem that has been reported is the pumps starting in reverse and making a clunking noise. There is a simple fix for that to

You're correct Matt but only certain wavemakers will regulate the speed of your pumps vs. just turning them on and off like the cheaper ones.
 
I guess Its just going to be up to me whether I want to risk it or not. My wave maker is one of the cheap ones (wavy sea) for sure. Maybe I'll just go with 2 more modded MJs.
 
i thought the connections for the koralias were specifically tailored to the koralia wavemaker box; so you could not use any other wave controller. maybe just for the controlable power heads?

actually you get enough turbulant flow with the koralias themselves on an interval timer to make a lot of corals happy.
I've had mine on a 25 dollar variable timer for a couple of years---the k3 and k4's I had to make the slight modification to stop the clunking noise----that I posted above on the blog--otherwise they have been great.
I have found this setup great for lps corals that don't like a lot of flow directed at them constantly. I lost both frog spawn and hammer coral til I went to a 2 min on 2 min off timer with them.
 
You think the 6s or even maybe the 8's would be okay on a timer then Cap'n? It wil be plugged into a current sea wave maker.

hopefull someone else can answer that--I am not familar with the new series.

like the lower flow models, hydor makes controllable and non-controlalble versions of the 5 6 7 8.

if you only have the controllable ones, then (at your own risk) cook them up to a timer? granted when the are on they are at the full speed.
