Koralia Evolution running backwards?

Great thread, thanks. I caught one of my 2 new Evo 750s running backwards yesterday or this morning. Guess I need to take it apart already. Thanks for the input and solution.

I would say it should. It usualy happens when you switch them on and off.

During setting up my tank, I just threw these on a regular outlet while I got my controller setup. After a bit, I noticed one was running backwards. So, like you said, its when you turn them on and off, or in my case, just on. haha

I figured it out, way different than those. I will take it back get a new one. :(

Did you contact custmoer service at Hydor. They can help troubleshoot the issue.

Typically when a Nano freezes its one of 3 things. The first 2 possibilities are that the impeller could be stuck to the shaft or the shaft may not be installed correctly into the front cover. You should take apart the Nano and remove the impeller and shaft. Makes sure both parts and clean and smooth. reassemble the unit without the front cover on. Next plug the unit in and see if the impeller spins. If it does not, then the issue is with the motor and warranty services shoud be able to help. If the impeller does spin, reinstall the cover. If installation of the cover stops the unit, you may need a new cover. Hydor has parts for the Koralias and they are typically free of charge.

the bushing kept coming off even after adjustment. i decided to superglue the bushing, and so far it has worked. only time will tell. imo, hydor came out with a flaw product. more testing should hv been done to ensure quality b4 releasing onto markets.

You can only do so much testing in a Lab. New products occasionally have issues. This is why companies are constantly evaluating how a product is performing and if there are ways to improve the design.

The issue with the Evolution Koralias is not in every unit and it is mostly localized to the 750 and 1050 models. Reef tanks are a challenging environment for any piece of machinery. The lubricant was designed to protect the o-ring and it had an unexpected side affect.

I am the first to admit that this inconvienence really sucks, but a solution was devised within 24hrs of the first reports of the issue and is being implemented. Hydor designed a new bushing that snaps into place that will be available for all Evolution owners (details are available on the Hydor website). Also all the Evolutions made from now on will have the new bushing. You can also wash your o-ring in rubbing alcohol or a dish soap to remove the lubricant. If your bushing does slip, simply push it back into place.

No, you misunderstood. They froze up before I superglued them due to slipped bushings. After I superglued them they have not seized up or run backwards...knock on wood...

It sounds like some of the superglue got between the bushing and the magnet.

Thanks for the updates as I just purchased (4) 1400's and have been noticing some weird sounds coming from them occasionally and I bet ithey may be having similiar issues as some of you have experienced.

Even with this minor issue, for the price I cannot complain much. I too was looking at purchasing (2) Vortechs but for 1/5th the money, I was able to get these. Vortech users have also reported issues and just like any new product, glitches sometimes may be present. Hats off to Hydor for listening to us consumers quickly and for addressing the problem and providing an easy solution.

The bushing slipping should not cause them to freeze up. I suspect that either some grit got between the bushing and magnet locking it up. Another possibility is that the impeller or the cover was not installed properly. When you disassembled the unit, you happened to correct the cause of the binding issue.

I just cycled both of mine 20 times each this time. Only once did one go in reverse, the other one never did. I do not find this to be an issue when on a timer, well to me anyways. I just wish my 1400's produced more flow. I am taking them out tonight and putting my modded k4's back in as they produced wicked flow in comparison but at double the wattage.

What did you do to mod them?

I washed mine with Dawn today, so far, no backwards starts. They turn on/off every 45 seconds, so thats pretty decent. Contacted Hydor and they said they would send me out two new bushings when they came in.
